@craigerzgt (...continued)I can easily start from 2nd gear at stop signs. Granted, the gears are spaced out more because it's a 6 spd, but also the torque that QR25 makes is impressive in my book. Also- I think I misunderstood the descipt. for you having the KLZE. What does the "IM" stand for after the KLZE? Any cams in the near-future?...that high rpm sounds REAL good on my end--must sound 100 percent better in real-life.
@Chris17psi Tough to say about 1/4 mile times, best guess would be a 14.7 or somewhere around there. Low-end torque starts to build over 2000 and builds nicely at 4000. Uncertain of torque figures, but the car came with 156 lbs-ft stock, so it would be a little more with the mods. IM = Intake Manifold. As for future mods, the car has been sold for something a bit quicker :)
@craigerzgt i know EVERYONE is asking you stuff, so I'll just get in line...what kind of quarter mile times do you (or think you) run? High 14's? Mid or Low 14's? And how's the low-end torque in your opinion? I've got an '04 Spec V, and compared to ALOT of other cars in IT'S category, with most of it's torque coming on from a little after idle(around 1800rpm) it's almost like having a small V8. What are the number's for that KLZE?-I know HP is like 200, but what's the torque?
The only change between your Pacesetter and Hotshot videos was the headers themselves?
If so, you just made my day. The Hotshots sound more even and don't set my teeth on edge like the Pacesetters do. I know the pacesetters are supposed to offer the best gains from a performance standpoint, but the benefits are a bit higher up in the powerband. How do the Hotshots compare to the Pacesetters between 2 and 5k RPMs? Thanks for posting this.
Any perceived difference in power would largely be in your head, as the power gains to the long tubes over the Hotshots is maybe 3-5 horsepower. Your main difference is going to be sound which is likely what the choice should be judged on, unless you're wanting to go for ultimate maximum horsepower. Really, the power difference would only appear on paper, not on the butt dyno.
@RoccooD It may be a combination of the VRIS intake system and the way the exhaust primaries are shaped, and how they lead into the 2-1 collector under the car. Listen to the Pacesetter clip I have, and that's the difference between equal-length shorties vs uneven long tubes. I'm not familiar with how Ford routed the exhaust on the Contour/Mystique/Cougar platform.
@Davesdefault121 Probetalk would probably have more accurate numbers, but I think the intake mani will give you about 10 hp, and the throttle body somewhere around 3-5. Remember, you can't add the power gains and get your number that way. The main effects of the intake are the mid-to-high power gains, and the throttle body is for throttle sharpness.
@Mr450 depends on the mod. Best performance improvements were the headers, catback, and intake manifold. ECU chip made the revband smoother for the IM, and the throttle body and shifter both made for more crisp driving dynamics. Suspension was definitely firmer and helps for autocross at the expense of daily ride comfort.
At the top of the strut, there should be a red valve that turns, and has white markings at one end. These markings are like an arrow that is to point at a specifiied number of the range of numbers (1-5) that surrounds the spinning valve. To soften the ride, go to a lower number.
Read the full comments list for the pricing, I'm pretty sure I've entered it in before, and it could have been done cheaper if I wanted to buy some things used if I was on a budget. As for how long, most of it was done over a 3 year period I believe.
cai 50, flywheel 200, clutch 500, testpipe 75, borla 800, shifter 100, headers 400, mounts 250, IM 250, tokicos 800, eprom 75 (200 with separate ecu), and tb 200. So that's about $3825 thereabouts.
Yeah I still have the KLDE. Horsepower-wise, not quite sure, maybe 190-200 crank horsepower, maybe 155-160 horsepower at the wheels. Something along those lines.
Average. I only list Chromeintakes because I was tired of people asking me what kind of CAI I have from eBay. Really, most CAIs are built the same, but that's the one I bought and it works fine.
Yeah i noticed Chromeintakes had an option to get a K&N cone filter instead of their own brand... I dont think it will be that much of a difference in power...so I'll stick with their brand and put the money i saved in my gas tank lol.
First off, don't cheap out. There's lots of knock-off parts and stuff out there, and they're mostly pure shit. As for mods, I would do short throw shifter, brake pads, cat-back exhaust, tokico struts/springs, and a CAI with the 65mm throttle body as the most bang-for-buck parts you could buy. I find that any further purchases tend to not have as much benefit, so if you were to stop there, that would be just fine I would think.
My '93 Probe has almost 245,000 miles and is STILL going... I got this car in June 1993 and after owning it about a week or so, I was stopped by an NC State trooper for speeding; had he caught me just a fraction of a minute earlier, I'd have lost my license for doing nearly 140 mph in a 55 zone in this fun-to-drive car!!
Try going with a slightly heavier weight oil. I had the lifter tick in mine and going with a 10 w 30 fixed it. Also make sure there is enough oil in there. That could cause it as well
What did u know about the top speed in a autom. trans and a manual trans, cause i have a 94 probe (autom. trans.) and it runs very nice, but i don't know if the manual probe runs better, can u help me
I don't imagine the top speed is much different between the auto and manual trans, and it isn't something that should be explored anyway. Regardless, the car does approximately 133 mph (240km/h, tried, tested, and true).
i had a 93 ford probe in highschool and it was a five speed with the 2.5 and magnaflow exhaust and cold air intake and with a buddy in it with me it went a little past 140 and the fuel cut-off light came on but a guy had a 96 auto in my highschool and his quit at 125 so i think the newer they got the sooner they stopped them but im not sure if an auto would make a difference none of us ever wanted an auto
I don't think that's much different than anything though, especially in the sports compact market. Find a vehicle that doesn't look/feel like it's been thrashed and it should be alright. I've had two probes in my ownership, and both of them, after some basic repairs, were brought back to standard typical reliability and fun. If someone was to buy one, they should just be prepared that these are 12-16 year old cars that will need some repairs to make them feel as good as they did new.
Because was planing to get a GT. The one i found is automatic . Anybody knows if the automatic trans is any good , if not i would change it to a manual trans.
Weakspots are the CV shafts, the boots on them ripping open somewhat earlier than most cars, although that's not really a big deal. The only other issue is the auto trans. Some ATX owners swear it's not true, but it does seem to come up a lot that you can break an auto trans easily, even without modifications. 5-speed is pretty stout. Other than that, my car's been in my family since '93, rarely gone wrong. Go to Mazda to get parts for MX6, Ford goes short of denying it exists.
The points I mentioned are considering that no forced induction is involved. Add a turbo or supercharger and you'll want to baby that trans big time. However, if you just plan on doing N/A mods like me, just don't beat the hell out of your trans and you'll be fine.
i have a automatic 93 probe and yes they are very good reliable cars i drive for a living and have had it for 2 years it has about 144,000 miles on it and the only thing that has seriously gone wrong with it was something in the tranny and only cost 400 to fix it so i suggest it
My freind just sold his KLZE swapped Probe.... Identical setup, hotshot header with a Greddy sp2 catback, Tokiko Illumina kit. Hauled Ass, there great engines.
ok now i need your help:you take out the stock DE manifold, the ZE should bolt rigth in perfect and you plug everything back in place the car should start w no problem and with good idle an everything, and if you need anithing else than the ZE manifold pls tell me.
yeah i got DE too pretty much same thing as yours but in a mx-6 and don't get surprized that these KLDE with a few bolt-ons are almost as fast as ZE!!
It has a short throw shifter that's typically made for a Honda Civic. Pretty much a perfect fit, and leaps and bounds above the stocker. A very underrated mod in terms of driving excitement.
There are two issues with the IM. 1) If you have cruise control (which I don't), the longer neck on it will cause interference with the system. Go to Probetalk to find out how to get around this. 2) The larger hump on the back of the IM does graze the insulation underneath the hood, but the hood still closes with no problems. The IM is very much worth it though, very noticeable difference, and even more with an EPROM chip.
hmpff nice!!! i used to roll in a ford probe yup 89 v4 2.2L intercooler 16 valves turbo... ahhh damnnnn i used to smoke stangs gt ahhh old days... now i gotta be happy with a Grand Prix GTP Supercharged.... i miss so much that probe...
My set is made for the KL V6, so I doubt that they would work for the Vulcan V6. I don't know a whole lot about 1st-gen performance parts, but it may be possible to get a set of headers for your V6. If not, you could always have a shop fabricate a set for you.
sound like the MX6 that i use 2 own..i had a PGT once but it was an automatic..now i drive a 00 Eclipse GT 5spd..but im really thinkn bout getn another PGT or either another MX6..idk..but other than that ya Probe sound crazy..
Headers, and a borla cat back make the car sound amazing, thats what I use. and i bet about 29-30 mpg and thats with beating on it, theyre good on gas.
If you got that intake from CHROMEintakes on ebay I want to know is everything you can tell me about CHROMEintakes. I have seen complaints like "doesn't fit for beans" and "slow shipping / wrong parts / will not reimburse for returning item / bad commun" etc.
When I purchased from them, their shipping times were good and everything was included. It was alot of adjustment during installation to make sure the CAI fit around the battery and the downpipe didn't make contact with anything, but it fits and has worked well.
the V6 from the '93-97 Probe GTs was actually a Mazda engine, whereas the 2.5V6 in the Cougar (and Contour/Mystique) was a Ford engine, completely different engines.
i had a 94 PGT manual with a 2.5" mexican exhaust and intake. It sounded awesome and claimed few good victories like a 240sx manual, a VR6 Golf and few civics. Fun car and great handling.... the V6 sounds beautiful.
Nice. How do You like TOKICO Illumina suspension? Is it very stiff? I want to buy those suspension on my Mazda 626 GE, but I don't know is it worth this. How about adjustment, feel diference between 1 and 5?
the Illuminas are maybe slightly rougher than a well-worn Probe GT suspension, despite the settings, and not as nice as a good MX6 suspension. however, you aren't buying the Tokico package for ride quality, but more for the performance. excellent road communication, but isn't too harsh, unless you're going over cobblestones or potholes.
(cont'd)i live in a city with horrible roads, and the "1" setting allows the suspension to bottom out and "3" is about as firm as i can take. i haven't taken the car to the track, so i haven't tried "4" and "5". i'm currently using the "2" setting for winter.
(cont'd) overall, it's a great suspension for highway duty that's slightly firm but completely tolerable, and slightly more firm around town if you live in a city with lots of pavement heaves, potholes, and snow. if your roads are better than mine, you will love it :)
Yea, that's about right! I'm selling my probe gt.. i really don't want the V6 anymore if i can find some good deals on the 2.2L 4 cylinder and the turbo kit than i'll keep it but i always like 4 cylinder, i just got the probe because it was the fastest V6 car that surprised me, but now i'm ready to for my 4cylinder turbo. If not the 2.2L turbo for the probe than the 200sx is next.
14.8 with only headers? Not that is not doable but is a little hard unless you have cams or maybe a fully tunned ZE. I know a 93 stock PGT has recorded the fastest 1/4 mile times (14.9)but then again some 93s were known to be "factory freaks" and maybe the driver was a freak too.
How are you matting the ZE-IM with DE heads? Remember you're hurting the flow if there's no port matching done between the heads and IM. At least you have the chip to open the VRIS correctly otherwise it was a no no!
I haven't done anything to port-match the square ports on the ZE IM to the oval DE heads. Yes it does hurt the flow, but I didn't want to pull the heads just to portmatch the corners. I was thinking that maybe down the road when I wanted to do cams or something, I'd pull the heads and have the DE heads square-ported and have the exhaust ports polished, plus replace some of the worn valvetrain pieces like the retainers and stuff.
Get a set of phenolic spacers for a DE and port only the top side making the corners squar-ish The ports will look like a funnel and you wont hurt the flow anymore.
I'm pretty sure you can buy phenos that have a square port top side and a oval port bottom side for this very reason. I didn't want to go through with it though because the manifold is already rubbing against the insulation under the hood.
tough to say for both. I'm thinking my current setup puts out 155-160whp based on other dyno pulls I've seen, and I've heard that cams might give a 3whp increase over the DE cams (not really worth it). I have the ZE manifold. As for the 1/4 mile, an MX6 with those mods, good driver, sea level altitude would maybe pull a 14.5 or so from the searching I've done.
That wasn't my point. My point was that from what I've read, the horsepower increase from DE cam to ZE cam is not very big, perhaps 3whp difference. Hardly worth it considering all of the work to pull the cams.
I am pretty much only the heads and cams away from having the performance of the KLZE. Since most of the bump in horsepower from KLDE to KLZE is in the intake manifold, I'm not terribly concerned about it.
Sounds like half a Ferrari....Very nice my freind. VERY nice. What did you pick up after you sold it?

WHAT IS THE REASON OF THIS VERY NICE MAZDA ENGINE SOUND? Maybe the intake system?
For example, the Ford Duratec V6 sound is special too, but it hasn't such a beautiful voice like this.

It has a short throw shifter that's typically made for a Honda Civic. Pretty much a perfect fit, and leaps and bounds above the stocker. A very underrated mod in terms of driving excitement.
craigerzgt 3 years ago
I have a DE in my probe and a buddy of mine has an old ZE and offered me the intake manifold. is the fit an issue? is it worth it?
pgt31 3 years ago
There are two issues with the IM. 1) If you have cruise control (which I don't), the longer neck on it will cause interference with the system. Go to Probetalk to find out how to get around this. 2) The larger hump on the back of the IM does graze the insulation underneath the hood, but the hood still closes with no problems. The IM is very much worth it though, very noticeable difference, and even more with an EPROM chip.

i was wondering are those headers avaiable on a 91 probe?(v6)
AdamApocalypse 3 years ago
My set is made for the KL V6, so I doubt that they would work for the Vulcan V6. I don't know a whole lot about 1st-gen performance parts, but it may be possible to get a set of headers for your V6. If not, you could always have a shop fabricate a set for you.

sound like the MX6 that i use 2 own..i had a PGT once but it was an automatic..now i drive a 00 Eclipse GT 5spd..but im really thinkn bout getn another PGT or either another MX6..idk..but other than that ya Probe sound crazy..

Headers, and a borla cat back make the car sound amazing, thats what I use. and i bet about 29-30 mpg and thats with beating on it, theyre good on gas.
soulboarder316 3 years ago
great sounds! I was just wondering though, how are probes on gas?
TheGreatness97 3 years ago 2
they're rated at 21mpg city and 26mpg highway, using US gallons. I've gotten approximately that amount during my years of useage.
craigerzgt 3 years ago
If you got that intake from CHROMEintakes on ebay I want to know is everything you can tell me about CHROMEintakes. I have seen complaints like "doesn't fit for beans" and "slow shipping / wrong parts / will not reimburse for returning item / bad commun" etc.
ToXiCvEliXiR 3 years ago
When I purchased from them, their shipping times were good and everything was included. It was alot of adjustment during installation to make sure the CAI fit around the battery and the downpipe didn't make contact with anything, but it fits and has worked well.

what engine? 2.0 or 2.5?
bowlinmaster89 3 years ago
2.5L V6
craigerzgt 3 years ago
sounds badass, I have a 01 cougar 2.5 dohc high output 196hp, same engine i think and it dont sound like that.
bowlinmaster89 3 years ago
the V6 from the '93-97 Probe GTs was actually a Mazda engine, whereas the 2.5V6 in the Cougar (and Contour/Mystique) was a Ford engine, completely different engines.
craigerzgt 3 years ago
ohhh lol, mine sounds more like a supra at high rpm's, yours just sounds like a freakin race car lol
bowlinmaster89 3 years ago
how did u get ur probe to sound like that? it sounds awesome man two thumbs up
GeoMetroMan91 3 years ago
Thanks! It's in large part to the Hotshot-style headers, testpipe, and Borla cat-back exhaust.

ok cool thanks dude

ppl really under estimate probe gt's. Stock, they run faster than you would expect...
ashlyxryan 3 years ago
i had a 94 PGT manual with a 2.5" mexican exhaust and intake. It sounded awesome and claimed few good victories like a 240sx manual, a VR6 Golf and few civics. Fun car and great handling.... the V6 sounds beautiful.

crap that thing sounds awesome, i now look at probes differently, lol

Nice. How do You like TOKICO Illumina suspension? Is it very stiff? I want to buy those suspension on my Mazda 626 GE, but I don't know is it worth this. How about adjustment, feel diference between 1 and 5?
lukas626 4 years ago
the Illuminas are maybe slightly rougher than a well-worn Probe GT suspension, despite the settings, and not as nice as a good MX6 suspension. however, you aren't buying the Tokico package for ride quality, but more for the performance. excellent road communication, but isn't too harsh, unless you're going over cobblestones or potholes.
(cont'd)
craigerzgt 4 years ago
(cont'd)i live in a city with horrible roads, and the "1" setting allows the suspension to bottom out and "3" is about as firm as i can take. i haven't taken the car to the track, so i haven't tried "4" and "5". i'm currently using the "2" setting for winter.
craigerzgt 4 years ago

If not the 2.2L turbo for the probe than the 200sx is next.

pretty nice what u hit in the track
rblaze2k7 4 years ago
i haven't been to the track, but at sealevel, i would assume the car could run a 14.8.
craigerzgt 4 years ago
nice shifting man :-D about 3 months i'm going to buy one myself i really love this car, the Sound is just amazing
mylomaster 4 years ago
14.8 with only headers? Not that is not doable but is a little hard unless you have cams or maybe a fully tunned ZE. I know a 93 stock PGT has recorded the fastest 1/4 mile times (14.9)but then again some 93s were known to be "factory freaks" and maybe the driver was a freak too.
RigsPGT 4 years ago
I don't just have headers. Check the "About this video" for full list of mods.
craigerzgt 4 years ago
How are you matting the ZE-IM with DE heads? Remember you're hurting the flow if there's no port matching done between the heads and IM. At least you have the chip to open the VRIS correctly otherwise it was a no no!
RigsPGT 4 years ago
I haven't done anything to port-match the square ports on the ZE IM to the oval DE heads. Yes it does hurt the flow, but I didn't want to pull the heads just to portmatch the corners. I was thinking that maybe down the road when I wanted to do cams or something, I'd pull the heads and have the DE heads square-ported and have the exhaust ports polished, plus replace some of the worn valvetrain pieces like the retainers and stuff.
craigerzgt 4 years ago
Get a set of phenolic spacers for a DE and port only the top side making the corners squar-ish The ports will look like a funnel and you wont hurt the flow anymore.
RigsPGT 4 years ago
I'm pretty sure you can buy phenos that have a square port top side and a oval port bottom side for this very reason. I didn't want to go through with it though because the manifold is already rubbing against the insulation under the hood.
craigerzgt 4 years ago
hey how do you think a mx6(klde) with ZE CAMS and ZE intake manifold will do in the 1320 and horsepower increase?
maqueavelico1 3 years ago
tough to say for both. I'm thinking my current setup puts out 155-160whp based on other dyno pulls I've seen, and I've heard that cams might give a 3whp increase over the DE cams (not really worth it). I have the ZE manifold. As for the 1/4 mile, an MX6 with those mods, good driver, sea level altitude would maybe pull a 14.5 or so from the searching I've done.
craigerzgt 3 years ago
A cam should give MORE hp over a stock cam. Always!
Magnuspire 3 years ago
That wasn't my point. My point was that from what I've read, the horsepower increase from DE cam to ZE cam is not very big, perhaps 3whp difference. Hardly worth it considering all of the work to pull the cams.
craigerzgt 3 years ago
Gotcha, I wasn't sure if you were talking about vs a stock cam or not.
Magnuspire 3 years ago
that Awesome. Ford Rules!
Loyal2Ford 4 years ago
Too bad you don't have the KLZE
mkfanatic007 4 years ago
I am pretty much only the heads and cams away from having the performance of the KLZE. Since most of the bump in horsepower from KLDE to KLZE is in the intake manifold, I'm not terribly concerned about it.
