little rock school district is mainly black now with a black superintendant and predomitaly black school board-the district is facing major cuts in funding now that a federal judge has ruled that they can no longer recieve state money for desegregation purposes-white flight out of the city of little rock has caused the area around central high to deteriorate and many houses sit abandoned-mayor stodola is putting a tax increase vote to the public to attempt to make up for the lost revenues.

Does it happen from black to white? Probably. But blacks overwhelmingly have not, and do not have a lot of power through wealth, or in political arenas. Most of that power lies with whites. You can have Brown v Board of Ed and try to implement it, but where you have legally allowed home loans to only go to whites for decades, so that they may move to the suburbs and remain away from blacks, it also gives them a huge financial headstart on owning property in different places and running up values so nobody else can get in.

President Eisenhower sent one the US Army's most famous and capable units, the 101st Airborne Division whose orders were to "ensure" the Nine could go to school safely. The "Screaming Eagles" look MUCH different than the Ark. National Guard...

In the south at that time, it was common for a community to spend four, five or more times as much money on white schools than black ones.

Black classes were much, much larger. The teachers less well educated and very poorly paid. Science books were way out of date. Facilities more often than not delapidated.

It had been proven to the Supreme Court that segragation caused mental and emotional damage.

The nation was wasting a precious resource by not developing its black youth, since they could in no way become as well educated when kept separate.

We were also losing our prestige in world affairs - our UN ambassador had a very hard time during those years. It was the cold war - we needed to regain the trust of our allies.

Here in LA, the schools are routinely shut down because of racial fights & riots between Black & Latino kids.. and almost every school district that converts from predominately White to predominately Black sees test scores sink, and violence rise. Have you seen the articles and studies that show that these negative results you are talking about do not occur in middle-class schools that integrate? And that when low-income minorities attend better schools, their behavior problems improve dramatically?

As always, whoever it is in society that has to live in poor neighborhoods and compete for insufficient resources (as the Irish did in the 19th century, and the Poles in the early 20th) will show signs of distress.

I am well aware of the IQ claims & the counter-claims. In my objective, unemotional estimation the counter-claims seem to have a much greater body of reliable evidence behind them.

As for why blacks were used rather than American Indians as slaves, there are several reasons but I'll just name one for now - Native Americans' immune systems were simply not up to sustained contact.

In fact, Columbus had tried to enslave them to make up for what he didn't find here. But they kept dying off.

You're taking the example of a successful Black individual & using that as an example for average Black achievement.. but the truth is, average Black achievement is lower than average White & Asian achievement..
