Hey man, i have a question for the part where you have to stretch from the 3th fret to the 8th fret on the A string. My hand just doesnt seem to get there at all. Is it an option to just hit the 3rd fret of the D string insteed? I know it sounds some different but then i can play it atleast. Or are there some practise exercises to make your hand stretchier?

How come you stretch to the 8th fret on the D string instead of just playing the 3rd fret on the G string? From watching Satch, I think that's what he does.

In my opinion, when you slide from the 2nd fret to 3rd and then back on the 4th and 3rd strings, I think it sounds better if you bend it a semitone up. It sounds almost exactly the same, just in my opinion bending sounds a bit smoother.

um actually i have a full size guitar and if i had a small scale id probably get even further but still i just stretch my fingers from the first 5th 6th or 7th frets so i can reach further you should try it

I think I'm gonna be the only mature person to reply without telling how good I am at stretching.

Well, first of all, some people have shorter fingers than others, but Satriani isn't one of those with very long fingers like Steve Vai. What you have to do, is to move your thumb down behind the guitar neck. You will lose guitar control, but gain stretch ability. At first it will feel very uncomfortable, but you will get used to it.

You will be able to stretch more over time.

The position of the thumb makes a HUGE difference on how far a finger stretch can be. Good job in bringing it up since I doubt a lot of people really pay much attention to this.

Practice makes perfect ^_^ Actually I'm always playing with my thumb behind the neck now, when you get used to it you will master a lot of techniques much faster! The only time you may move your thumb over the neck, is when you bend =) When you bend you should use your wrist, not your fingers, to stretch the string... So! Thumb behind neck for arpeggios, stretches, fast alternating and much more, thumb over neck for bend ; - )

Hey man, nice lesson. I think you can avoid that long stretch to the 8th fret by playing the lower half of the C7 chord instead (G on D-string; B-flat on G-string). Satch actually does that in his little Surfin' lesson on Youtube. If you watch his pinky, it only plays the A without having to extend the stretch out to the B-flat. Cool stuff though and nice jem.
