Marilyn is not only gorgeous, but soooo Classy too - unlike all those unclassy female singers we're stuck with today (you know the ones... Brittany, Rihanna, Madonna, Gaga). Marilyn's voice, poise, grace, beauty are enough - she doesn't need skimpy outfits or gimmicky "meat" dresses and cone bras to shine through. Take me back to Marilyn anyday!
I love Marilyn McCoo also and have to admit this clip was not one of my first choices to hear because, well it wasn`t her song. But its like another said, she could sing the phone book and you would hang on every note. I can still remember learning to slow dance in junior high to "One Less Bell". Just thinking of that vocal gives me goosebumps to this day. Thanks for sharing...
BTW, my favorite female vocalist of all time is Dionne Warwick (big tip of the cap to Gladys Knight). Although Streisand may technically have a better voie, Dionne has a sound that just can't be matched.
Streisand: voice 10, looks 7. McCoo, voice 9, looks 10. Advantage McCoo. Streisands voice stands alone, but Marilyn has a great voice and is gorgeous as well. We are lucky to have had them both.
Still, they both have voices that are above and beyond 99% of other female singers. I'd only give McCoo a 9 for the purpose of comparing her to Streisand. Otherwise, she's a 10.
I saw a review of a Marilyn record comparing her unfavourably with Diana Ross. What a joke, there are only a few singers in Marilyn's league and Diana is not one of them. Marilyn has the lot eeffortless power, great dynamics and emotional and interpretation, and an unbelievable vocal range. An earlier post gave her 10/10 for her looks, but she is much better looking than that.
@sagahammer Hmmm. If Diana Ross is so far beneath Marilyn McCoo, why is Marilyn the one doing pseudo-Vegas Barbra Streisand covers on a cheesy syndicated show?
@tjbnyc76 I was not talking about how successful they are, the spice girls were successful but nobody could accuse them of being good singers. I was talking about ability to sing, she leaves Diana Ross at the starting gate, and looks. Never forget that nobody ever went broke by underestimaying public taste.
@sagahammer The Spice Girls were successful for about three or four years... ? Diana Ross's first chart hit was in 1962, and her last Top 40 album was in 2007. I completely agree that public taste is often out of sync with actual merit in the "here and now," but longevity is the proverbial proof in the pudding. For the record, I *like* Marilyn, and enjoy her recordings. As far as being "better" than Ross - lots of singers can hold a note longer. Not many can maintain a career as long.
@tjbnyc76 Yes but I am still not talking about popularity. I am talking about pure singing ability. I do not dispute that Diana Ross has many fans, but her power, dynamics and vocal range are very weak compared to many popular singers including Marylin McCoo. Success, even long term success, has never been an indication of quality. Many of the backing track singers in the music industry are far more talented than the "superstars" they are backing.
@sagahammer ...I agree, Diana Ross owes her career to Barry Gordy, there's just no doubt about it. Ross is an ordinary singer who was fitted with superb, 1st-rate material under the hottest label of the 60s. That's not the case with McCoo, who betters her in almost every way. McCoo is almost too refined for my taste and some of her choices don't match her personality, but when her voice is matched with the material of her 5th Dimension era, she is terrific and actually elevates the material.
Marilyn's version is my second favorite version of this song. Her voice is pure silk. But Barbara owns it. The movie was fantastic. So many good memories from the 70's. I was married in l971. 37 years to the same guy! Love the footage from this era. But seeing the Viet Nam war coverage again makes me so sad. When will our leaders learn that war is so insane? Have our leaders learned anything? Apparently not!!! I'll go back to the age of peace and love anytime! Hippies and all!
I agree, except you make the mistake of refering to them as "our Leaders". Bush is not a leader, nor will our next president be a leader. The voters had a chance to vote for a principled man in Ron Paul and Americans failed. We all get the governments we deserve though and wars of empire will continue.
don't forget Ralph Nader was on the ballot. While Ron Paul is a nice man, Nader spent decades fighting corporate power and displayed real leadership and executive skills by creating organizations for the this missions.
Ralph Nader agrees with Ron Paul on peace rather than empire and on eliminating the Federal reserve and instituting sound money. Thats good, but Nader is an advocate of big government. Nader said: "The consumer must be protected at times from his own indiscretion and vanity." What contempt he must have for people. In a free society, it is not the function of government to protect people from themselves. We have become subjects of the state because of this kind of thinking.
No SWSimpson, Marilyn's not boring, YOU ARE. And you're IGNORANT TOO! Marilyn is unquestionably one of the best performers of all time, and she's beautiful to boot. YOU MISERABLE HATER YOU.

Marilyn McCoo formerly of Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr (sang: You Don't Have to Be a Star); and also from the Fifth Dimension (Up, Up, in a Way, in my Beautiful Baloon). She is such a boring singer and performer; although she has a pleasant voice, it isn't very interesting or exciting.
Marilyn shows Mrs. Brolin how this song SHOULD have been sung! One question... If the show was a tribute to the '70's, why no picture of Marilyn with the 5th Dimension in the photo-montage portion of the performance ?

Marilyn's vocal elegance is remarkable. She performs this with a flair of her own, without taking away from Barbra's original version.
Marilyn is always just so classy. Her beautiful marble eyes convey so much emotion when she sings.
I can watch this performance over and over again.
