Goodness me, everyone. The guy is obviously only going to be teaching the basics of the beat. No, he's not going to teach you the exact method John Bonham used to sit his ass on the throne and chew gum everytime he played. Surprise fucking surprise!
wow- what's up with all the negative comments on this guy? he's just trying to share and teach.... thanks for the lessons there buddy- I am a total beginner .. this is pretty cool to see- thanks-
@HeidiIvy You are getting lessons from a guy that was not even born when John Bonham played that song in Dec 1970. Those of us that grew up on Zep, knows that John was the greatest drummer and played from the heart and not from sheet music. You will learn more watching Zep videos with John Bonham and watch how the man played. You can't learn from someone that probably does not even know who he was.
@SissysDad hey guess you can skin a cat in many ways eh? So, I hear what you are saying, there is a fine art to copying anything really. I think this guy was not into the perfection you speak of. At least he listens and knows good music for being so young. It's a true talent to be able to honor another in a perfect way isn't it. BTW, Do you like Ginger Baker's drumming? THNX- Always interested in hearing passionate people opinions- take care!!!
@HeidiIvy Ginger Baker is good and was a good compliment when he was with Cream. He sold out to ludwig and started using DW's during his solo career. I do agree that at least this guy listens and knows good music. My only drawback is that he is trying to teach others Bonham's style by explaining the notes he plays and John never played it the same way each time. Again, he played from the heart and that is what he taught his son Jason from age one.
@HeidiIvy In this video, his knees are taller then his bass drum. John always used a 26 inch bass and not a 22 inch. That bass should be well over his knees unless he is seven feet tall. You can't get the same sound use anything less. John also used a metal snare and not wood. Big difference! I played Bonhams songs for years and could never call them a cover. They were just my version. A true cover songs just like it.
Who is this boner thinking he can teach someone how to "Bonham"? John Bonhams style can not be taught. One could only hope that with years of practice, they get so intensely into it that it comes close. John made it all up as he went. You can't teach with notes because as tjfreak and vaughanclooney point out, John would change subtle things every time he played it. That was his style and what made him such a great drummer. You may have ten year olds impressed, but not us.
I still say it's a single beat on one at the beginning and not 2 sixteenths. What appears to be the second sixteenth on the original track in Led Zeppelin 4 is actually an echo due to it being recorded in the hallway of a big house with a big mf 26" bass drum. This difference coupled with the small bass drum used here completely misses the "going to hell" groove of the original.
Think of a big kit in a echoing room. Listen to the original again. It's a subtle difference - you need the ear.
The hi hat hits aren't continuous in the original, if you listen close, Bonham skips hi hat hits, not always simultaneous W / snare hits, with lone a hi hat hit following...also hi hat accentuation...apologies for the weird terminology , one of the reasons I'm really sorry I didn't continue to learn how to read, quit band and lessons in 8th grade(remorseful blunder)
I'm pretty sure the only thing you're right about is the accentuated hi-hats. He definitely hits the hi-hat with the snare. It's difficult to hear over everything, especially the snare, but it's there.
Nice job, however I've often felt that there aren't really as many beats on the kick in this song as many think. There's alot of slap back echo going on giving the impression of more kick drum strokes than what Bonham was actually playing. Check it out.
Not a spiral staircase, merely a conventional one in a full-height stair hall. I've got a photo of the place - PM me your email address and I'll send it.
i really dont get what people are complaining about. its actually a decent lesson. I dont get why it took 5 videos but still

Yes he looks like a scrawny green nerd chicken.
Yes he plays it like he's weak and passionless.
Yes expertvillage sucks (see their dating experts - hilarious!).
Yes he uses the timing terminology confusingly and should just do the hand-foot patterns slowly (we can find the speed and groove ourselves)...
Yes there are some lovely full-blooded drum covers on YouTube
*BUT* he's the most helpful start to a beginner drummer and Led Zep fan like me.

i think a good drummer should always create his own style and not just play the things others have played note by note, thats stupid.

Every good drummer knows it's the number of pieces, not what you do with them that counts. Notice how the best drummers have small kits?

If you watch part 1, he says that there's only one stroke on the original and that the fact that it sounds like two is down to the massive reverb.

Yeah, the drum part was played at the bottom and recorded at the top of a three-story spiral staircase.
