You have about 40 seconds to show that you have the skills required for award of the level you are testing for. The judges can let the whole time pass or stop the fight when they feel they have seen enough to make their decision.

This was a shinsa (promotion test) not a shiai.

Yes he passed. A few months later he also passed his shodan shinsa.
