We need campaign finance reform, like limiting expenditures not just contributions and eliminating PACs altogether

@Joseph565112 In a truly free market economy you don't need much--if any, government regulations because the competitive pressures of the free market would provide all of the natural regulations we would need. The reason why so many politicians are even on the market is because big government give them so much to sell...Without so much power government would have little to sell. Laws limiting campaign spending & PACs are authoritarian because they violates free speech rights.

@sleedolfine15 'free market' is an ideology...there has never been a 'free market' system that we can harken back to, etc.

In later renaissance Europe (where capitalism saw its genesis) there were virtually no regulations, even in 'perfectly competitive' markets like agriculture.

Merchants went out into the countryside, bought up commodities and other goods, and then colluded, horded them, to drive up the price.

@Joseph565112 Actually one does not have to go to an imaginary land to find free market capitalism. If you mean perfect capitalism--no,inasmuch as perfection does not exist anywhere. There is no perfect socialism,conservatism,liberal­ism,christianity,etc. However,there are more than sufficient approximation of that system to give us a sense of its superior value. That system, more than any other, is responsible for raising mankind from out of the muck of human misery.

@sleedolfine15 What are you talking about? I am well-versed in economic history, both pre-industrialization later renaissance Europe, as well as the industrial period to follow.

Merchants were executed all over Europe, namely Normandy, in 14th and 15th centuries for collusion and price fixing.

19th century America - the Boston Associates control 22% of the nations textile output, and nearly 40% of the banking capital

@Joseph565112  I never called renaissance Europe free market capitalism nor would I call the mercantilism that Adam Smith lambasted capitalism,but 19th century England and America had much economic freedom--enough that Herbert Dow was able to out compete and out wit the German chemical.cartel and free market railroader James J. Hill did the same against his subsidized competitors. Also,J.D. Rockefeller proved that controlling a market isn't inimical to an open and free market.

Free? Not when 80 men can control 40% of the nation's banking capital, and 20% of its textile out put.

Before the trusts were broken up, companies could collude, divide up whole markets, and only after being broken up really resorted to incorporation.

The genesis of the industrial corporation at the turn of the century is literally their attempt to shield themselves from liability/regulation.

It was an era in which,due to the limited government philosophy of one of the 2 political parties(the Democrats-- although they declined after the Civil War) government was limited to about 3% of the GNP providing a freedom which spawned low prices,high productivity and wages as well as much technological innovation--A glorious age of Rockerfeller,Dow,Hill,Carnegie­,etc.

Rockefeller played upon the instability of the 19th century, the recessions, even making mention of trust busting himself....after the Sherman anti-trust act passed lol.

@Joseph565112 I am happy to defend the great John D,the man who liberated the people from the tyranny of the sun by providing them low cost lighting well into the night. Thanks to Rockerfeller's efficiencies,he was able to reduce the price of kerosene from a dollar per gallon when he began selling it,to a mere 10 cents by the 1880s.. He also produced 300 products from oil waste. Like other great industrialist of the age Rockerfeller did more for people than any government program.
