You brought up Nutnfancy. Have you watched his Emerson Booth Review. It was freaking fantastic!!! So good. Best Shot Show video from 2012. That guy Ernie is super cool. I'm gonna buy an Emerson after some research into what will be the best for me.
I enjoyed your vid by the way. You did a good job. Thank you for posting and giving your opinion.
Watch Neptuneknives video "Emerson CQC-7 fail" and get back to me on how awesomely constructed your Emersons are..... A CS Recon 1 has far stronger lockup and is an arguably tougher "Tactical" knife.
Yep, axis locks suck balls. They can fail more easily than a standard liner lock. A locking liner lock such as is found in the applegate-fairbairn combat or CRKT desert cruiser is the best I've found so far for hard use. Too bad this is found in knives with just so-so blade steel, not a great knife yet (to my knowledge).
The only thing that is holding me back from the Emerson is the fact that they are a liner lock....On my tactical knives I prefer a lock back like the triad or the Axis type locks. Have you had any experience with them coming loose or the liner failing?
@aikido10 - I've had a Benchmade Axis lock fail on me, and some cheap Gerber lock backs and liner locks, even broke a Boker frame lock... never had a single issue with an Emerson.
@mechak - Some men, like yourself apparently, seem to fantasize and obsess over my big meaty paws... you can't stop thinking about them... their rough flesh, huge, thick, strong fingers. Almost like huge ballpark hotdogs grasping, tugging, maybe rubbing mustard all over your throbbing manhood. Oh yeah, that sounds nice huh? Maybe some ketchup too? NOT FOR FREE BITCH!
@FrenziedCalm HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA i give your reply 5 stars. that was damn hilarious. Dont worry i got sausage fingers too just not your "big meaty paws" hahahaha not an insult just an observation. :)
@CowboyNovak - Look up Grand Prairie Knives on the internet and click their list of Emersons. They are the local dealer for me, the place I buy most of mine. You can also buy from the Prestige dealers on Emerson's site. Also check Ebay.
@BackwoodsBlades - I prefer the Roadhouse over the full size CQC-15. Both are a bit big for EDC, but are great for "defense" I guess... I'd kill for a Mini-Roadhouse... perhaps some day Emerson will release one. Until then my Mini-CQC-15 has to perform general EDC duties and be my "most carried" Emerson. For defense the Combat Karambit is probably my favorite... its also scary looking as hell.
@FrenziedCalm hahaha sure is man, i fondled one of the combat karambits in a knife store the other day, very impressed with it, hopefully i'll eventually get one. Bought a Roadhouse the other day, just wanted to thank you for your input on it.
@MrCleanerNash - The Roadhouse is my favorite 3.9 inch Emerson. I love that knife and would get it over any of the other Emersons. The CQC-15 would be a close second. I don't own yet, but do like the CQC-13 "Bowie" knife, it looks pretty mean... one of these days I'll get one of those. It might challenge the CQC-15 for 2nd place?
@redandbluebeater - Benchmade makes low end knives, previously (like when this vid was made) they were called their Red Class since then they've become HK or whatever, but they were/are made of recycled tin cans in slave labor camps in Chinese shanty towns. Spyderco also makes Chinese crap knives, thankfully they label most of them Byrd or whatever, but there are still plenty of cheap Chinese made knives simply stamped "Spyderco"
@manhezze - I only own "right handed" Emersons but I carry my Emersons left handed, and in my opinion the "right handed" Emerson is actually extremely nice for lefties as-is. Carried in your left pocket, you can draw it and wave it open easily left handed... it just ends up blade down in your left hand ready for defensive slashing use. I carry my Combat Karambit or Roadhouse this way literally every day. Seriously, check this carry style out.
Great vid very informative. haven't picked up one yet. I read up on the history & Emerson himself. Sounds like a great thing. Might I ask what's your take then comparing Emersons to Striders? Which do you prefer
@NeptuneKnives - I've got like 10 Emersons and 3 Striders, and prefer the Emersons. I think the wave is great. And I don't like the hole that Strider uses as much as the thumb disk of the Emerson. Others obsess over the frame lock, but I don't see it, and the Strider is all G10 on the other side. Both are nice knives though.
My Emerson knife is 13 years old, and I paid $150 for it. If I average the cost it was cheaper than 13 cheap knives. Mine is so old it has Benchmade markings on it, since I believe this was before Emerson had their own facility, and it has torx screws. However, it's been my EDC all this time and still works great. I want to move up to a Super Commander but I haven't been able to justify replacing my perfectly good knife yet. Emerson is by far the best I've owned.
@crazyforcrcars - people say their expensive, but seriously, I don't see it. How are they expensive? You ever priced a Spyderco Millie? Benchmade Emissary? Emersons seem right in the ballpark with the other high quality makers. Hell, even Spydie's Taiwan made blades can exceed the price of these Emmies, just look at the Sage models!
@crazyforcrcars lol If you think these knifes are expensive look up Rick Hinderer knives. You are looking at over a thousand dollars for a first generation, and there almost impossible to find.
I Love this Vid! I too am a Emerson knife (single) owner. I carry the Super Commander (6.9 oz) for the "two purposes" that you mentioned. I would say you could even add a #11, the liner lock. For years I have avoided liner locks due to comments, attitudes about this lock, but an Emerson liner lock is in a different league. My Super Commander is a 2009, and the liner lock still tightly engages on the left third of the blade tang, in fact it sticks, and I use two hands to disengage the lock.
@TheOriginalPanduh - a fixed blade? why not just get a tactical short sword? a short sword? why not just get a 2 hander Katana? a katana? why not just get a tactical 30megawatt neutron blaster with S90V spinners and phallic shaped blow off valve...
One-upmanship games suck, don't start them.... they all tend to end in: "my penis is bigger than yours!" and you'd lose that game my friend! Badly!
@FrenziedCalm hahaha why not get a fixed blade, awesome response to this guy frenzied, hey original panduh let me know how carrying a 10inch long fixed blade works out for you in your pocket in an everyday carry situation, and in public situations, prlly won't work out to well
You would need to understand the history behind them....they first started as designs that Emerson Made for SEAL Teams, a "tactical" folder is much easier for covert work than and fixed blade as you can't just stick you fixed blade knife in your pocket and expect not to be cut.
I'll never understand the fascination with flicking knives open, especially with an Emerson. If you need it open fast, use the wave. Otherwise, who cares?
I just ordered my first Emerson so I'm watching everything Emerson right now.
I loved the vid. Great job! I had to laugh at the last comment about the three months. 8 Emersons in three months is not bad. You have a very nice collection. I'm subbed.
Great vid! Hey I love Emerson also... Do u have any frame lock emerson's?? I've seen a HD7 with frame lock but hard to find for sale... Do u know of any other models with F/L?? Our do u know of anyone I can get to make mine into frame locks?? Any help would be great!!!!
Great video and very fair and accurate summation of the qualities and detraction's of EKI. I have just recently gotten the Emerson bug and bought a Super Raven and Mini Commander. I don't think they will be the last. I am now in the process of ridding myself of some safe queens to justify the new direction in my collecting sickness. That Roadhouse is looking pretty cool. Hmm...Thanks for the vid. Well done.
Let me ask how will it hold up to hard use almost boarding abuse of it I mean I have thought of it but I don't want to spend a lot of money on a knife that wont hold up..
i dont like chisel grinds but chisel edges dont bother me. i like big nasty tactical folding knives. currently carring a benchmade 8600 bedlam for my tactical and a 940 osbourne for the EDC blade. ive been thinking bout getting one. idk i might just have to get my hands on one. thanks for the review
Excellent video and great review of the features found on Emerson knives. I'm awaiting delivery of my Super 8! The chisel ground on my 7 is sooo sweet! The grinds on the Emersons are reason for my interest in their knives. I've misunderstood the sharpening process and angle on my 7 and because of my ignorance, took my 7 out of my EDC rotation. I discovered how to properly sharpen it and now it's on me all the time. Just finished trimming off some dried skin from a wound I sustained!
@MrReverendgreen - I got rid of most of my "collection" in the last few months of 2010. All I've got left are my favorites, Emersons & slipjoints mostly. Kept my favorites from Benchmade & Spyderco though. Kept the Bokers also because they are cheap work knives. Few others, but nothing like I used to have. Maybe I'll do a collection video tonight, snowed in anyway LOL
Just ordered my first emerson, the CQC 8. After watching this vid I have pretty much gotten the Emerson bug and am looking forward to purchasing more. Thanks for the help and keep the vids coming. One more sub for ya.
Most people forget that owning an Emerson despite it's undebatable weaknesses are that they're just plain cool. They're caveman simple, failproof, and another reason is just the community that comes with it.
To be completely fair, you get the same things in a Zero Tolerance and KAI builds knives with tighter tolerances. There are other brands out there and it's not fair to them to just fight off everybody. Some of the people who post here are bloody idiots though.
@neonightkiller - people confuse the grind of the blade itself and the sharpening style. Emerson makes chisel grind blades, like the CQC-7... they also make a ton of V grind blades as well, CQC-15, Commander, tons of them. However as far as I know, all of their blades are sharpened with a chisel edge - only sharpened on one side. I personally prefer it, it is very easy and quick to clean up an edge that way, but panzies whine that it makes their cucumber slices look funny! :)
@FrenziedCalm - Great vid! I have seen Emerson knives around, wasn't sure what all the buzz was about. Very informative. Can you comment on the out of the box sharpness of an Emerson? How does that chisel grind edge geometry hold up as far as edge retention? I assume they are generally S30v? Seems like everyone is using S30v, literally just a shot in the dark at the steel.
@Kingofthelamas - all of my Emersons have come razor sharp. A were insanely sharp... and vicious! Plus they are easy to keep sharp. All my Kershaws also came razor sharp. Those 2 companies know how to put on a factory edge. Benchmade could take some lessons from them.
@chibraxial - You own a 710? Thats your vast collection of epic thick bladed tactical knives? Well, I also own a 710, and I can assure you that it looses horribly in any "tactical" comparison. It is a good letter opener though.
@chibraxial Guys that wear suits still need a tactical knife sometimes, yet maybe they want something that matches their attire. Not everyone is the same in the knife world.
@chibraxial - serious tac knives... used by who? Overpaid 30 year accountants that play Call of Duty too much? Yes, thats quite a marketing segment. Are you at all familiar with how Emerson Knives established itself?
I don't really care about history, it is totally irrelevant in regard to the fucntionnality of said knives. . Are you living by the brands rather than the objective quality of products?
@chibraxial - please name these epic thick tactical knives you have, I'd love to look up what tactical teams use them. Oh thats right, you just saw them on CoD4 :)
Haha, good point on Nutnfancy's 4 oz rule and how he will carry multiples. I never thought about that. Then again, I break his 4oz rule all the time anyway.
This is a great video. I think Emersons have a place in every person's collection. My normal EDC is my Spyderco "waved" Delica that's Krein'ed to a full flat grind (For fruit and paper LOL), and I got my Emerson CQC 10 that I use for work / outdoors (used to cut wood, straps, cords, grizzlies, wolverines, and anything that may come my way). They all got their place. I got a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 (S90V & CF) on the way and in the near future I'll hopefully have a mini CQC 15.
Excellent appraisal of EKI folders! Many folks tend to forget that Emersons are hard-use tactical knives. Slicing paper and fruit doesn't count as "hard-use"! LOL!!!
The most popular Emerson knives are the 7, 8, and Commander. The 15 and Roadhouse are new designs but are gaining a large following too. I would go with one of the top 3 as your first Emerson. The 7, 8, and Commander have proven themselves useful over years of use and abuse. I'm carrying my CQC8 right now and love it. No matter what Emerson you pick, you can't go wrong.
The "wave shaped feature" was developed on the original Commander knife the Ernie was building for Naval Specwar. They had requested the addition of a blade catcher on the spine, it was quickly discovered that the blade could be deployed just by pulling the knife from the pocket, hence the birth of the wave.
Great vid!! Keep 'em coming!
Btw- I'll be doing a vid on my CQC-6 in the next few days or so...
Brilliant video! I'll be linking people to this when they want to know about Emersons.
Something I love about EKI knives is the fact that one persons pro is another person's con. You watch all the drama unfold on bladeforums about fit and finish, and yet for others (myself included), a bit of roughness is just a part of owning a new Emerson.
In any case, absolutely awesome video. Keep em coming!
Your Emersons must be broken in completely for the ability to open by flicking:) Great collection! I'm trying to build up my collection as well. I've recently ordered another one, should be here in a couple days. Great points! Thanks for the vid! How are you enjoying that karambit now? Are you getting the left hand draw down now? Lol, I hope you didn't cut yourself again!
@darkchild57 - I carry the Karambit almost every day in my left pocket. I've got the draw down perfect, it didn't take too long to master. I did cut myself good on the blade, bled out about a cup of blood from a nuckle slice, but it wasn't done during the draw, I innocently stuck my hand into the pocket to get some change out and ZIPPPPPPPP it unzipped the flesh of my left hand middle finger.
Needless to say, my left pocket is not used as a change pocket anymore!!
They are great knives but unfortunately I have yet find one I absolutely loved. Ive had the mini commander and mini cqc-7. They werent to my liking. I liked the 7 the most but I didnt like the serrations. I have a cqc-14 on the way and hopefully its what Im looking for.
@nosaj03 - This new Roadhouse is probably destined to be my favorite Emerson, I just love the thing ... but I'm a tanto fan so thats probably to be expected. There are lots of CQC-7s around without serrations. They also sell spearpoint models if you aren't a huge chisel ground tanto fan. They also put out a sprint run of "V" ground CQC-7 Tantos recently with tan handles. Check them out!
Love them! I love a good tactical knife just in case I happen to need it. I just like the feeling of confidence they bring when you carry them. Great vid my friend.
@guitarmikey2 - Thanks Mikey, I love them too... If Im going to carry around a knife, I want it to be one that could do emergency preparedness "stuff", to be used as a prybar to get me out of an elevator, or open a painted shut window in an emergency, or bust a windshield underwater, or punch through a tire sidewall allowing me to get away, or (insert 1 of 10,000+ other possible life saving scenarios here)... try some of that stuff with a SOG Flash 1 or even my loved Benchmade Sequel.. FAIL
One that you did miss, is the one that a lot of Emerson knife owners call the "Emerson Thumb". That's coined after the inconsistent liner lock retention from one Emerson to another. Some are harder to break in, trying to disengage the lock. Some locks slide past the optimal middle/center locking position to the other end, again making it hard to detach. The quality control in that area is the biggest knock on these knives. Otherwise, very good tactical knives indeed!
@fretlesstuba - The titanium lock of the Emersons takes a good bit of breaking in. In the process a lot of "gunk" builds up at the base of the blade, where it contacts the liner lock. This "gunk" is the source of the difficulty in disengaging the lock on every Emerson knife I have heard this complaint about so far & had the owner check. So take a peek at the base of your blade and clean it off... and clean the top of that liner lock too, and then see if you have any lock "stickyness' issues.
@oromoto - Every great Emerson collection starts with a single first purchase!! :) There is a nice Emerson Commander BT at New Graham right now that I keep wanting to order... its got your name all over it!! BladeHQ has a bunch of options as well. They are out there, it just takes searching. You will search in vain for some models, but the more common models are out there sprinkled here and there at various dealers.
@lnhrt43 - I've never read any of those books, I believe Strider has a model based on the books though, or maybe vice-versa? Not sure. I do like the looks of that Strider model though, kinda a tanto, but not! LOL
@TheSerb111 - Tip up carry is required on Emersons because of the physics involved with the wave device and its use.
But in general, I like tip up because I can shove my thumb down into my pocket, and my forfinger to the tip of the pocket clip, then when I remove my hand and the knife from my pocket there is no real shift in position of the knife or my fingers needed to open it and be ready to use it. Tip down just doesn't seem nearly as smooth to me.
the best thing about an emerson knife is the simple screws. the flathead pivot and the philips head handle screws. thank fucking god. the smaller torx heads are way too delicate. so are the bits. they piss me off. the gentleman jim and the a-100 are my faves so far. i dont own them yet but ill see what the future brings. why are they so expensive when emerson saves so much using interchangeable materials. same blade thickness. same pocket clip. same handlematerial. titanium on one side.
@PavlovSandor - Both the Gentleman Jim and the A100 are good looking knives thats for sure. Big price difference between them though, the Gentlman Jim is one of their "prestige" class knives, which seems to be a limited release, low volume knife. The A100 should be more reasonably priced, more aligned with larger Spydercos and Benchmades perhaps. Of the two I'd recommend the Gentleman Jim if you can afford it, I love the wave feature and the A100 is missing it.
I just finished watching your video and really enjoyed it.Once again thank you for taking the time to make it and post it.

Well done.

What makes emerson knives so special? What's all the hype about?

@LaddieGalicia - They are hard to find for sale, people want what they can't have?

Let me ask how will it hold up to hard use almost boarding abuse of it I mean I have thought of it but I don't want to spend a lot of money on a knife that wont hold up..

i dont like chisel grinds but chisel edges dont bother me. i like big nasty tactical folding knives. currently carring a benchmade 8600 bedlam for my tactical and a 940 osbourne for the EDC blade. ive been thinking bout getting one. idk i might just have to get my hands on one. thanks for the review

Dude, you're part of the reason that I'm now an Emerson junky. This video also played a big part. lol

I own an A-100 and soon, a 7
LordChrisHimself 1 year ago
every emerson is chisel ground?
neonightkiller 1 year ago
@neonightkiller - people confuse the grind of the blade itself and the sharpening style. Emerson makes chisel grind blades, like the CQC-7... they also make a ton of V grind blades as well, CQC-15, Commander, tons of them. However as far as I know, all of their blades are sharpened with a chisel edge - only sharpened on one side. I personally prefer it, it is very easy and quick to clean up an edge that way, but panzies whine that it makes their cucumber slices look funny! :)
FrenziedCalm 1 year ago 6
@FrenziedCalm - Great vid! I have seen Emerson knives around, wasn't sure what all the buzz was about. Very informative. Can you comment on the out of the box sharpness of an Emerson? How does that chisel grind edge geometry hold up as far as edge retention? I assume they are generally S30v? Seems like everyone is using S30v, literally just a shot in the dark at the steel.
Kingofthelamas 1 year ago
@Kingofthelamas - all of my Emersons have come razor sharp. A were insanely sharp... and vicious! Plus they are easy to keep sharp. All my Kershaws also came razor sharp. Those 2 companies know how to put on a factory edge. Benchmade could take some lessons from them.
FrenziedCalm 1 year ago
basically, you spend the whole video talking about weaknesses and obvious cheapness like they're good things.
I don't understand the people loving this brand, they really are nothing special.

Well, my benchmade 710 is superior in every way to an emerson. And it's cheaper.
chibraxial 1 year ago
@chibraxial - You own a 710? Thats your vast collection of epic thick bladed tactical knives? Well, I also own a 710, and I can assure you that it looses horribly in any "tactical" comparison. It is a good letter opener though.

@chibraxial Guys that wear suits still need a tactical knife sometimes, yet maybe they want something that matches their attire. Not everyone is the same in the knife world.
QuietBearr 1 year ago
The blades aren't very thick... they're quite thin actually. Most other serious tac knives have much, much thicker blades. Just saying.
chibraxial 1 year ago
@chibraxial - serious tac knives... used by who? Overpaid 30 year accountants that play Call of Duty too much? Yes, thats quite a marketing segment. Are you at all familiar with how Emerson Knives established itself?

@FrenziedCalm
I don't really care about history, it is totally irrelevant in regard to the fucntionnality of said knives. . Are you living by the brands rather than the objective quality of products?

LOL!!!

Rudemustang1 1 year ago
@Rudemustang1

Lol, I hope you didn't cut yourself again!
darkchild57 1 year ago

I have a cqc-14 on the way and hopefully its what Im looking for.
nosaj03 1 year ago
@nosaj03 - This new Roadhouse is probably destined to be my favorite Emerson, I just love the thing ... but I'm a tanto fan so thats probably to be expected. There are lots of CQC-7s around without serrations. They also sell spearpoint models if you aren't a huge chisel ground tanto fan. They also put out a sprint run of "V" ground CQC-7 Tantos recently with tan handles. Check them out!

Love them! I love a good tactical knife just in case I happen to need it. I just like the feeling of confidence they bring when you carry them. Great vid my friend.
guitarmikey2 1 year ago
@guitarmikey2 - Thanks Mikey, I love them too... If Im going to carry around a knife, I want it to be one that could do emergency preparedness "stuff", to be used as a prybar to get me out of an elevator, or open a painted shut window in an emergency, or bust a windshield underwater, or punch through a tire sidewall allowing me to get away, or (insert 1 of 10,000+ other possible life saving scenarios here)... try some of that stuff with a SOG Flash 1 or even my loved Benchmade Sequel.. FAIL
FrenziedCalm 1 year ago
Hey Frenzied-
One that you did miss, is the one that a lot of Emerson knife owners call the "Emerson Thumb". That's coined after the inconsistent liner lock retention from one Emerson to another. Some are harder to break in, trying to disengage the lock. Some locks slide past the optimal middle/center locking position to the other end, again making it hard to detach. The quality control in that area is the biggest knock on these knives. Otherwise, very good tactical knives indeed!
fretlesstuba 1 year ago

You will search in vain for some models, but the more common models are out there sprinkled here and there at various dealers.

why do people like tip up carry
TheSerb111 1 year ago
@TheSerb111 - Tip up carry is required on Emersons because of the physics involved with the wave device and its use.
But in general, I like tip up because I can shove my thumb down into my pocket, and my forfinger to the tip of the pocket clip, then when I remove my hand and the knife from my pocket there is no real shift in position of the knife or my fingers needed to open it and be ready to use it. Tip down just doesn't seem nearly as smooth to me.
FrenziedCalm 1 year ago
@FrenziedCalm I see
TheSerb111 1 year ago
the best thing about an emerson knife is the simple screws. the flathead pivot and the philips head handle screws. thank fucking god. the smaller torx heads are way too delicate. so are the bits. they piss me off. the gentleman jim and the a-100 are my faves so far. i dont own them yet but ill see what the future brings. why are they so expensive when emerson saves so much using interchangeable materials. same blade thickness. same pocket clip. same handlematerial. titanium on one side.
PavlovSandor 1 year ago
@PavlovSandor - Both the Gentleman Jim and the A100 are good looking knives thats for sure. Big price difference between them though, the Gentlman Jim is one of their "prestige" class knives, which seems to be a limited release, low volume knife. The A100 should be more reasonably priced, more aligned with larger Spydercos and Benchmades perhaps. Of the two I'd recommend the Gentleman Jim if you can afford it, I love the wave feature and the A100 is missing it.
