I chose NOT to hear Renee Fleming as Violetta@ LA Opera in this production. I had seen the same production with different company singers prior to this one. Fleming is a great singer, she has a beautiful voice but she oversings and sounds affected and phony. She never does get truly into character nor has a sincere passion for her art. She is a diva and tha'ts not a compliment.

Opera is meant to viewed from the seats not up close like film.

if the movements weren`t exagerated it would appear as if they were standing more or less still to the audience.

It`s nice that you feel one of the greats is not that bad.

Renee Fleming would be perfect if she didn't take a lifetime to finish a phrase, plus her voice slides in some parts. She is a melodramatic actress, but who isn't in an Opera or in anything that is done on stage, but yes it does look fake. I prefer Netrebko's acting or for that matter Dessay (even if I don't like her singing jajaja!). All in all, I could watch Flemming in the Traviata she isn't that bad.

This is where Fleming's limitations are most obvious: as fabulous a singer she is she either doesn't know true despair or does not want us to see that she does. She's faking it. Well but faking it. I've always felt that essentially she's holding back. And I really like her as a singer...
