What does that guy mean there's no Scrooge and Tiny Tim relationship at the end? They're blimen hugging each other with Tim on Scrooge's shoulders what more do you want!!!!!!!!
You're joking right? Performance capture technology makes the best animation! And polar express is definatly a christmas classic, for me anyway, it's on every year which I can't say about a lot of other christmas movies. They should make video games using this technology, if they don't already. Would make a great war game animation.
Oh stop complaining u idiot just enjoy the fricken movie....Im not talking to any of these youtubers im talking a bout the lady in the vid...Anyways Robert zemeckis is the best at motion capture he really catches the look on there faces in the film. considering Jim Carrey was in it, its clearly going to be a good movie. when i watched it last year, i would've given it a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.9 1/2 out of 10
sorry ladey you way wroung. know why the guy is so good at what he does.By him doing the wire frame he can turn an real persion into an cgi persion. The more we get into more tech more complex it has to be. We all want and carton or Cgi persion to look as real as posible. The more we get near perfection more the movies will more belive. Its 3D also ladey the other movies are not 3D. 3D takes way more rendering. Doing 3D rendering in Cgi is hard not like real life.
@colinstienke I guess she wonders why go the the trouble of making people seem as real as possible instead of just having it live action, then they would be actually real. But the reason for CGI is to have the characters do something that humans can't. Ever see a live action christmas movie with a sleigh shot? Not that great, looks awefuly fake. But turn that into CGI, and voi-la! Looks good. Or as jim carrey would say, "It's gooooood".

Fuck this review!!!!! The animation was friggin amazing!!! And who cares if its animated or not?? It still tells a good story with amazing detail and there are some things that cant be done in live action!!! Besides it looks great in this style. You might as well say Shrek is a shitty movie cuz it uses the same animation style!!! And i hope that Zemekis keeps using this technique cuz its just amazing what things he can do with it!!
Seriously, whatever it is, how certain are anyone about any of his cases. Everyone has his dark side. Let it go. if he's guilty, he will get his bit & we should leave that to GOD. We are not in the position to punish him. Are we that Perfect?
Let us remember him for his talent & the good things that he have done.
Awesome movie, I really enjoyed it - definitely worth a watch, the best i've seen in a while now :) One of my top 10 for 2009! I watched it online for fr3e :) at iwatch - movies - online . c o m
I liked this movie it was very good and i am really started to like a christmas carol story and it really was scary at times i mean it says that it may be scary for younger kids but holy crap when marleys face screamed at scrooge when he was on his doorknocker i saw everyone in the theater jump up in their seats. the 3-d was good you have to see it in imax 3-d to get the full effect it really looks real.9 or 10 out of 10
haha. I me and my friend saw it.(not together) and he comes up to me in school and says "Holy crap, that movie is NOT for little kids! Like when the ghost is shriveling up and laughing!" lol
i have a sister and a brother My dad and me and my younger brother liked this movie, we rated it 7.8, i sister in between my brother and my sister didn't see it but i rated it 7.8, the above rating is the total rating of us rounded off, my mother' would probably like to see it but i don't know if she would like to see it, anyway it is a good movie, i liked it a lot, i can rate very well, i can rate perfectly, so that is very good
I saw it with my school, for some reason they chose something considered a "kids movie" and a few people screamed at times, they added in all this freaky crap that wasn't in the book or the 1996 movie of it, now lots of kids are going to see it coz it's a Christmas movie and be freaked out. I wouldn't want my little cousins to see this movie, they'd probably be scared.
i only saw the 50's version when i was 20 and this one was ok now this is new technology because im almost 100 years old ha ha ha ha but i would love to take my grandkids to the movies so i would love to win the free movie tikets
I do adore films that are made to the point when they look fantastically real, but even so I would have been more interested in this film if it was done in a traditional cartoon then CGI, but then again it would probably look like all the others done by Disney.
I didn't see it, but it looks roughly between a 7 and an 8, so I'll give it that. Probably not the best ever done, but I'd say it would be okay compared to the traditional ones that I've always loved as a kid.
i dont think it's that good.....because if i remeber mostly all of the versions are aimed to kids but disney (for a company who make crappy shows for kids) they stepped a line too much...but it's a zemeckis film so i blame him for making kids have nightmares
i didn't even know all these movies were 3d motion capture...that's why they all look like zombies and creepy looking....I think because the story been told gazillion times that i dont care to see it.
Zemeckis hasn't totally sold me on motion capture yet, but this is definately the best of the 3 he's done. Some of the story's emotional core was lost in the CGI and action scenes, but Jim Carrey and the rest of the cast were outstanding, and visually it looked amazing, so overall i'd give it a 7/10. A fun time at the movies, but not something i'd watch over and over on DVD.
That's the question isn't it... why do you need motion capture and animation when Jim Carey has one of the most incredibly expressive faces in showbiz...?
For Christmas I want my very own Grace Randolph. lol
Harsh review. I may wait and see this one on DVD, even tho the 3D part probably wont make it. I have to say I love the Photorealistic CGI. I agree it's better for creating a CHARACTER and not remaking an actor unless there's a reason. For Example...Fans want more Star Wars flicks where Those characters are forevermore Mark, Harrison and Carrie who are now too old to reprise their roles. Use realistic CGI and use their voices.
Hate too say it but you dont know what your talking about. Critics are saying how it is the best and scariest remake of the Christmas Carol EVER made. And motion capture is awesome. Especially the way you Robert does it
Hey guys love the show I'm only 13 but me an my friend are going to make matrix-star wars mix movie but I got a problem I need some real lookin Uzis and pistols can u help me out
I dont know it was like around a 6 to 7, - Movie review:Well I think they could have done better with animation,If they could make the movie 9 that good they could make this good too.
Thanks for the intervention, mocap makes no sense at all for an entire movie. I saw both Polar Express and Beowulf in 3D IMAX and I won't be seeing anymore of Zemeckis' creepy wax puppets staring blankly at me. The 3D effects are cool, but you can do those with live action using two cameras, you don't need to digitize the whole thing.
@Johnlindsey289 Avatar v. Polar Express is a perfect example, because Cameron didn't feel the need to make animated versions of the human actors, just the aliens. That and it's a year later and he spent a lot of money so he probably had better mocap tech at his disposal (esp. if he used the facial capture from Benjamin Button). Beowulf vs. Fire and Ice is an interesting comparison in content as well as technique (mocap vs rotoscoping). I'm guessing if you still like F&I you'll like Beowulf.
Na'Vi are not human right and Mocap only works with non-human characters right? do you suppose Bakshi, Cameron and Heavy Metal's Taarna sequence have better rotoscoping than Zemeckis offers? oh yes do you think Beowulf is the same as Heavy Metal, Ninja Scroll and Princess Mononoke when it comes to adult animated fantasy epics?
@Johnlindsey289 While mocap works with humans, it makes more sense to point a camera at an actor and get the performance right there. Zemeckis' characters have had very poor facial animation thus far. I like the Bakshi/Zemeckis comparison because a lot of people criticized Bakshi for his rotoscoping at the time. I don't like rotoscoping, but it's a cheap way to tell a story if you don't have money. I'm a huge Miyazaki fan so Mononoke wins for me. But I'd compare Beowulf only to Heavy Metal.
@Johnlindsey289 I never saw American Pop, I liked Fire & Ice back in the day. I thought I'd seen Ninja Scroll, but it may have just been the animated series. As for Bakshi's LOTR, and everything Bakshi did, it all goes back to money. He just never had the budget to do things as well as he wanted. Especially with LOTR, they cut his funding halfway through and told him to cut it from 3 movies down to 1 at that point he didn't care anymore so he slapped an ending on it and walked away.
oh how very wrong they are, the reason the film is mo-cap, is because the version of scrooge they wanted to present would not be possible for a live actor. By this I mean that Scrooge is thin as a bone, very gaunt, very creepy. The movie is not a shot for shot remake, It chooses to focus more on the horror aspects of the story, which Dickins meant for the original story to be, a supernatural spooky dark and twisted tale, not the happy go lucky version most watch today.....
They made this movie animated because they think they can get more kids to see this movie. Kids like more animated movies while adults like more live action stuff usually.
So, if you put both in a movie, they figure the adults will enjoy the real life parts, and the kids will enjoy the animation. I think this story is done too much though. Sometimes, I believe they like to show this story a lot so they can keep on telling people to buy, buy, buy. This is for people that cutback.
i saw that film, i'll admit some bits were rather slow but it was still a fun movie, i enjoyed it and it was a good laugh. There were some bits that actually NEEDED the CGI to look right, if those bits were done in live action it would have looked silly, i loved how they portrayed the Ghost's and 1 small criticism i DO have is Tiny Tim in this film was nowhere near as lovable as in other versions, if they shortened the slow bits and made Tiny Tim lovable, then id give 10/10, instead i give 8/10
this was really great movie you can tell they put a great effort in rhs but i agree this took a big drop in this guys place but jim carrey... id say he was a good choice for the old man thats why i didn't give it a 6.0 =D
If you're going to animate then animate, if you're not going to animate then why go half way? I mean there is a reason why rotoscoping isn't the standard, why bring it back with this. Seriously though STOP making this movie over and over again, I mean how barren is DIsney on ideas? Pay one 100th of what you paid zemeckis and I will make you something original xmas themed and awesome and you will cry with joy at a new franchise to exploit into the grave with washed down sequels.
I saw the movie. It was pretty descent, 3D Animation was really good, the textures were realistic and the lighting was excellent, overall 8/10. I am an animator myself, and although I have seen the story in tons of depictions from live action to cartoon, and now to 3d, I can just appreciate this film for it aesthetics.
i give the movie a 8.5. the movie was very graphically exciting and gave a nice view of the basic story line though the 3-d graphics were not plentiful, it did i keep me entertained and focused.
I'm sorry you feel that way, but occasionally I do an "intervention" when I feel an actor or director has gone seriously off track, ie Nicolas Cage and Eddie Murphy. And as you can see from many of the comments here, I'm not alone in feeling Zemeckis is making a mistake with stop-motion animation.
IT'S JIM CARRY!! When you have Jim Carry in a movie, you do live action! It's not like he's bad at animation acting, it's just....seeing Jim Carry's face and voice is WAY better than just hearing his voice. YOU CAN'T HAVE ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER!
I loved the fim, it followed the original script/book (Depending on your veiw) the closest than all the other movies that I have seen.
Not recommended for children UNDER 13!!!! They will not understand the dialouge, which is the biggest part of the movie. I agree they could've made it live-action, but it still captured me in ways I couldn't describe. Excellent job mates. I GIVE THIS MOVIE AN 8!!
One Sentence Review: Annoying, took out a few key parts of the book, and only seem to be liked by little kids (the 3-D was the only thing that woke the adults up); can we stop having Christmas Carol movies?
Allow me to play devils advocate for a moment by saying that Jim Carry, and other actors like him for example Will Farrel and Jack Black to me seem very average as far as talent goes, and just a bit overrated as most of their movies are very much hit and miss.
hmmm...farrel and black have nothing to do with carrey. are you saying they could have done the truman show, the majestic, man on the moon or eternal sunshine? carrey's talent far exceeds them.
One Sentence review:ZZZZZZzzzzzzz.......I fell asleep in the movie theater because it got so boring, and all I remember was a giant Irish man laughing....
yeah... that part where the ghost of chrismas present was dieing and those two little girls were under his robe was kind of disturbing for a childrens movie. lol
Wow so she completely ignored the fact that they used the mocap to make the ghost or does she think they should have real ghost flying around? But she is ignoring the fact that its a lot of things that people just can't do, but that's easy to animate those actions
bigphilly08, if James Cameron could make Robert Patrick into the T1000 in the 1990s in a live action movie, I think Robert Zemeckis could make some ghosts using SFX and keeping the movie live action. :)
Although I liked this video, I'd have to disagree with the "If it looks real, why not make it real?" mentality. Just look at movies like Fire and Ice (which was rotoscoped). It was imaginative, beautiful to look at, and we didn't care about the fact that there wasn't any character development. It was just cool, and wouldn't have been if it was live action.
What does that guy mean there's no Scrooge and Tiny Tim relationship at the end? They're blimen hugging each other with Tim on Scrooge's shoulders what more do you want!!!!!!!!

Hate too say it but you dont know what your talking about. Critics are saying how it is the best and scariest remake of the Christmas Carol EVER made. And motion capture is awesome. Especially the way you Robert does it

It was writen in brtain but made in the us. Must be bad!
NathanAndrewLonsdale 2 years ago
Thanks for the intervention, mocap makes no sense at all for an entire movie. I saw both Polar Express and Beowulf in 3D IMAX and I won't be seeing anymore of Zemeckis' creepy wax puppets staring blankly at me. The 3D effects are cool, but you can do those with live action using two cameras, you don't need to digitize the whole thing.
kesmeby 2 years ago
@kesmeby
What makes Avatar's Mocap different? and do you think Beowulf is a good animated fantasy movie for adults like Fire and Ice?
Johnlindsey289 8 months ago
@Johnlindsey289 Avatar v. Polar Express is a perfect example, because Cameron didn't feel the need to make animated versions of the human actors, just the aliens. That and it's a year later and he spent a lot of money so he probably had better mocap tech at his disposal (esp. if he used the facial capture from Benjamin Button). Beowulf vs. Fire and Ice is an interesting comparison in content as well as technique (mocap vs rotoscoping). I'm guessing if you still like F&I you'll like Beowulf.
kesmeby 8 months ago
@kesmeby
Johnlindsey289 8 months ago
@Johnlindsey289 While mocap works with humans, it makes more sense to point a camera at an actor and get the performance right there. Zemeckis' characters have had very poor facial animation thus far. I like the Bakshi/Zemeckis comparison because a lot of people criticized Bakshi for his rotoscoping at the time. I don't like rotoscoping, but it's a cheap way to tell a story if you don't have money. I'm a huge Miyazaki fan so Mononoke wins for me. But I'd compare Beowulf only to Heavy Metal.
kesmeby 8 months ago
@kesmeby
What did you think of American Pop and F&I? good use of rotoscoping eh unlike LOTR (animated) right? have you seen Ninja scroll?
Johnlindsey289 8 months ago
@Johnlindsey289 I never saw American Pop, I liked Fire & Ice back in the day. I thought I'd seen Ninja Scroll, but it may have just been the animated series. As for Bakshi's LOTR, and everything Bakshi did, it all goes back to money. He just never had the budget to do things as well as he wanted. Especially with LOTR, they cut his funding halfway through and told him to cut it from 3 movies down to 1 at that point he didn't care anymore so he slapped an ending on it and walked away.

I thought this film was amazing.
dazzafox02 2 years ago
oh how very wrong they are, the reason the film is mo-cap, is because the version of scrooge they wanted to present would not be possible for a live actor. By this I mean that Scrooge is thin as a bone, very gaunt, very creepy. The movie is not a shot for shot remake, It chooses to focus more on the horror aspects of the story, which Dickins meant for the original story to be, a supernatural spooky dark and twisted tale, not the happy go lucky version most watch today.....
juswise78 2 years ago
They made this movie animated because they think they can get more kids to see this movie. Kids like more animated movies while adults like more live action stuff usually.
So, if you put both in a movie, they figure the adults will enjoy the real life parts, and the kids will enjoy the animation. I think this story is done too much though. Sometimes, I believe they like to show this story a lot so they can keep on telling people to buy, buy, buy. This is for people that cutback.

i saw that film, i'll admit some bits were rather slow but it was still a fun movie, i enjoyed it and it was a good laugh. There were some bits that actually NEEDED the CGI to look right, if those bits were done in live action it would have looked silly, i loved how they portrayed the Ghost's and 1 small criticism i DO have is Tiny Tim in this film was nowhere near as lovable as in other versions, if they shortened the slow bits and made Tiny Tim lovable, then id give 10/10, instead i give 8/10

this was really great movie you can tell they put a great effort in rhs but i agree this took a big drop in this guys place but jim carrey... id say he was a good choice for the old man thats why i didn't give it a 6.0 =D
lOLMAN2627 2 years ago

I have to say though, that Horton Hears a Who captured Jim Carrey's quirks pretty well in the animation.

Allow me to play devils advocate for a moment by saying that Jim Carry, and other actors like him for example Will Farrel and Jack Black to me seem very average as far as talent goes, and just a bit overrated as most of their movies are very much hit and miss.
kingofchaos7 2 years ago
hmmm...farrel and black have nothing to do with carrey. are you saying they could have done the truman show, the majestic, man on the moon or eternal sunshine? carrey's talent far exceeds them.

Wow so she completely ignored the fact that they used the mocap to make the ghost or does she think they should have real ghost flying around? But she is ignoring the fact that its a lot of things that people just can't do, but that's easy to animate those actions
bigphilly08 2 years ago
bigphilly08, if James Cameron could make Robert Patrick into the T1000 in the 1990s in a live action movie, I think Robert Zemeckis could make some ghosts using SFX and keeping the movie live action. :)

indymogul 2 years ago
Although I liked this video, I'd have to disagree with the "If it looks real, why not make it real?" mentality. Just look at movies like Fire and Ice (which was rotoscoped). It was imaginative, beautiful to look at, and we didn't care about the fact that there wasn't any character development. It was just cool, and wouldn't have been if it was live action.
