overall, I have to say this game's style is better. everything besides the artwork... well, I mean you said it yourself, 5 is like a copy of 4 in terms of the menu styles, how you set up the mechs... Honestly, FM evolved is like a rip off of Armored Core.. so.. whatever. I think I'll always love FM4 ^^ ten times better than 5's mechs... the mechs in 5 ...they squirm >< it looks creepy. At least here in 4 the mechs look the same and act the same, in cutscenes as in battle. THAT matters.

FM evolves too easy, my mind become so numb playing it..

REgarding the melee weapons...hey they never run out of ammo lol. And as per the gameplay, if you have your melee unit run up to the enemy and you have them linked to your other characters' attacks, the melee unit gets to attack several times during the same round as long as they are adjacent...and it only costs 1 AP unlike shooting which costs 3-4 or more. So it's useful if you know how to leverage it.

Ok Panzer is a well known and nice word but wanderung? come on it sounds retarded and im german. and no one would say wanderung panzer .... more like wandernder Panzer or laufender Panzer ... but they sound not really better. Maybe Kampfläufer , but there isnt a Panzer in it. In reality we wouldent even call it panzer because it isnt a tank. oh those japanese doing strange things again....

I like the music in this game a lot. Oddly enough I saw this game at a used games hobby store and was like, yeah I like strategy rpgs and I never played a Front Mission game before. So I bought it, I remember Mark talking about this game a lot in other reviews so I had it in pretty fresh in my mind.
Anyhow cool game, I plan to work my way through it in time.
Front Mission 3 is FAR better than 4. Storyline is weak, characters are weak, customizable wanzers are weak, some of the best features in 3 are gone, like forced surrender of enemies (in order to get their wanzers), ability to enter and exit your wanzer, battle skills are now bought instead of earned, cheesy as all hell voice-overs, and last but certainly not least, put your TV in black and white mode cause this game might as well be in black and white as there is no COLOR in it unlike FM3...
FM 3 has much better colours and stages, the story was far more interesting and capturing advanced wanzers early in the game was fun as hell.
One feature I prefer from FM4 is the gameplay, I enjoy not being limited by 6 skill slots and not having to learn skills why wearing items, they are shoppable. Passive skills make impossible battles seem winnable and not having to rely on 6 x Pilot DMG or 6 x ROF UP 1 etc.
It probably goes for next to nothing now. You're missing out if you like mech strategy RPG, it's a really good game, aside from the switching between playing Durandal and the deserters. Some of the simulations require perfect planning and luck to beat.
i know that front mission 4 is mostly a luck game but can someone make a walkthrough and show like the best things to do like the weapons and skills and how to get stuff and yeah,please do it

I have this game I stop playing it but i want to go back playing it. I was with Darril(spelling) and his crew with two locals fighting the badguys it was right after group in Europe beat Wagner.
This game was hard but it still fun and if I gt this game out of storage one day i need to finish it.
I gotta say, regarding the comment about the brass knuckles, it makes sense to me, they do massive amounts of damage to enemy parts, way more than any of the bullets do in one blow, plus if you want to drag logic into a giant robot game, logic would suggest that the brass knuckles and pile bunkers would be more cost efficient due to the massive amount of money it must cost to keep each gun filled with ammo, just one Wanzer and their weapons would cost a fortune!

IMO, Front Mission 4 is the best game in the franchise.
Good review. I do have to disagree with the plot being its weakest point. It may not have the convoluted and often times ridiculous storyline/s which most games tend to veer to nowadays, it does its job well enough to keep the player engrossed. It also compliments the well-developed characters, whose VOs are one of the best I've heard.
I really liked the South American characters. Darell was a funny guy. I really liked those characters more than the euro team. Although the Euro team fought against Wagner who was a cool bad guy. I was also disappointed that the 2 teams did not join forces in the end.
Yeah, I like Front Mission 4 too! Personally, I like it better that the two Wanzer teams you're playing in the game remain separated. It makes sense since they sit in different continents, and "joining forces in the end" seems a tad cliched.
PS: Good thing this ain't a Tom Clancy game. It would probably portray only the USN/UCS as the good guys while everyone else are evil.

This game never gets old. Even though i have an Xbox 360, I still end up going back to my ps2 to play FM4. Also, the use of melee weapons(just as Mortaro117 said) is mainly needed when you are out of ammo. During one mission, i was down to killing 4 or 5 more enemies and had absolutely no ammo left. Fortunetly, for me, one of my wanzers had melee weapons equiped.
I think they can punch for a last resort attack, because if you were ever to completely run out of ammo you need something to attack them with. Personally I think huge lightsabers would've been cooler but, you get what you get I suppose.
Argh! I saw this game in the store once, and went to get it because it was very inexpensive. I found out once I got to the register that the store had no copies left at all, despite having the box up there!
This game looks great... the sound effects sounded good too.
The original Front Mission for the SNES recently got an excellent port to the DS, and even includes a new campaign to boot. I recommend this game as well.
I'll second the DS port, great game. It would be excellent value as a simple port of the original; throw in a new (yet shorter) campaign and it's a steal!

IMO, Front Mission 4 is the best game in the franchise.
Good review. I do have to disagree with the plot being its weakest point. It may not have the convoluted and often times ridiculous storyline/s which most games tend to veer to nowadays, it does its job well enough to keep the player engrossed. It also compliments the well-developed characters, whose VOs are one of the best I've heard.

i loved the last mission. the first time i saw that giant spider thing i was like O_O i'm not gonna beat this but i did. it was pretty easy too.

I really liked the South American characters. Darell was a funny guy. I really liked those characters more than the euro team. Although the Euro team fought against Wagner who was a cool bad guy. I was also disappointed that the 2 teams did not join forces in the end.

Yeah, I like Front Mission 4 too! Personally, I like it better that the two Wanzer teams you're playing in the game remain separated. It makes sense since they sit in different continents, and "joining forces in the end" seems a tad cliched.
PS: Good thing this ain't a Tom Clancy game. It would probably portray only the USN/UCS as the good guys while everyone else are evil.

this one isnt bad at all, the only thing that disappointed me about this game, was the fact that it is sooo strait forward. it would have been better if you were able to explore this futuristic world rather than just going from fight to fight like nothing else matter .

FM5 is not in english stop talking out your ass and making people think that it is, FM4 flopped on ps2 western market, their is no reason to bring 5 over, games like this and thundeforce etc just dont sell enough for people to bother bringing them out, it sucks because we miss out, that new FM2089 probably wont come out here either, FM3 and FM1 are my favs

This game never gets old. Even though i have an Xbox 360, I still end up going back to my ps2 to play FM4. Also, the use of melee weapons(just as Mortaro117 said) is mainly needed when you are out of ammo. During one mission, i was down to killing 4 or 5 more enemies and had absolutely no ammo left. Fortunetly, for me, one of my wanzers had melee weapons equiped.

I think they can punch for a last resort attack, because if you were ever to completely run out of ammo you need something to attack them with. Personally I think huge lightsabers would've been cooler but, you get what you get I suppose.

Argh! I saw this game in the store once, and went to get it because it was very inexpensive. I found out once I got to the register that the store had no copies left at all, despite having the box up there!
This game looks great... the sound effects sounded good too.
The original Front Mission for the SNES recently got an excellent port to the DS, and even includes a new campaign to boot. I recommend this game as well.

In terms of hardware there's also build quality, and pretty much anyone who's owned one for any length of time realises that the 360 is a shoddy piece of crap.
