"Ferdinand" is my favourite childhood story! The story itself is very good, and the artwork is absolutely incredible. I'm now an artist for a living, and I think that had a lot to do with it.
Anyway, I didn't think this was a bad interview. I think Carson sounded a little more intense and hyper, especially compared to Elliott, but it sounded okay to me.
I love Elliott but he doesn't make this easy for the interviewer who is doing a pretty damn good job and asking some pretty interesting questions. Probably the whole manic depressive thing.
why is everybody being so mean to carson daly. he didn't do a thing wrong. elliot just didn't seem comfortable in any interviews because nobody seemed to understand him. so just stop bashing carson and put some more love for elliot
i think this was a well-done, if brief, interview. very respectful, with pertinent questions.
elliott is soft-spoken and doesn't seem entirely comfortable. which is entirely fitting with the narrative us fans have been familiar with for some time now. definitely a trip to watch this some years later.
@thedancingfork - That was probably a rhetorical question, but to answer that, they already have a list of topics and limited time, so the conversation is directed and is done so in a hurry. The interviwer is expected to be the professional at interesting conversation (can't be said for all, hence this interview) to attract viewers, because viewers are money. Remember, the lack of passion for most interviewers means exactly that; they don't give a shit about the music or talent.
Oh my god I forgot he had a ferdinand tattoo, I love that story about the peaceful bull who liked to smell the flowers and wouldn't fight, I am going to get that tattoo! Yeah I've noticed that in his interviews mastershakeisdead and NOBODY calls him a bumbling mess in front of ME! Nobody insults him at all!

it makes me feel awful. he was fingering his strings cuz hes obviously very nervous and not used to people talking about him. and then the most dooshbag comment in the history of dooshbag comments.... um... were gonna let you play here in a second.
you dumb mother ****ers! what are you talking about? everyone on dope sounds like an idiot, have some compassion... all the greats have gone that way. If you like the music, great. Respect the inspiration and it's lame side effects, and if you don't like the music, why the bleep are you here?
Carson is doing what he can. The truth is that Elliott hated talking about his music on television; it could have been with George Harrison and the result wouldn't have been too different...
@TheKenTerry Don't want to get in an argument here. This is all speculation on my part since I never knew him; but it doesn't seem like he was ever too concerned with what genre he fell under. Which makes most of this interview kind of uncomfortable to watch. You can tell there is some tension there. It just seems like he said yes so that this really awkward interview would just move along and be over.
Anyway, I totally remember watching this interview way back in 1998, but at the time I never noticed just how uncomfortable Elliott seemed talking on camera. Hindsight being 20/20, I'll always think he was a remarkable musician, but not one necessarily enthralled by the spotlight.
Love ya, man. You put out some fantastic stuff that we'll be listening to forever.
People are slagging on Carson here, but to be fair, I think he's just doing what a television host gets paid to do: generate some chat with the artist and attempt to promote whatever project said artist is attached to. It's no more, nor no less than that.
(comment cutting off for space now ; hope the other half will show up correspondingly)
LOL when this starts and the camera pans out and there's carson daly and sitting next to him is elliott fucking smith it just immediately made me laugh out loud, its just such a hilarious juxtaposition of these two characters, it doesn't even seem to be in this reality, hahaha what is poor elliott doing on mtv
@myothercariseva01 lol so deep and such a shallow response from Carson. He really wasn't made for this type of fame. I guess it was a total accident that it all happened.
Maybe cookda. But he was also giving multiple daily interviews for the Oscar season and working around the clock to finish the XO album. Anyone would have been worn out.
It's remarkable how insincere Carson's attempts to be a genuine guy are, and how violated Elliott looks during this whole thing. I think it's safe to say that Elliott, like any musician, wanted to succeed, but I don't think he was truly interested in all that is inherently linked to notoriety. After Good Will Hunting, he didn't really have that chance at being that chameleon he may have wanted to be;he was pushed into being a face for Indie & Low-Fi.
Elliott told this guy about Ferdinand... he zoned out and said "thats awesome...uum, I should mention this is this Spin article with Madonna on the cover..." Elliott just looks away for a second.
After 2 weeks i feel the need to comment. i saw this interview 2 weeks ago and have watched it everyday since. idk why, just looking at elliott, the way he talks, and yea idk just something about elliott. it makes me sad hes gone. he looks like such a nice guy who made such beautiful music. the first when i found one of his songs i didnt know he was gone, then when i did man that hit me i was shocked. well love elliotts music
@lboygrace I have to gently challenge your statement; carson is imply far to simple to interview anyone ... Take the very first 'tattoo' question. What an ocean of possibilities it was; to explore, to elaborate, to examine this brilliant Ferdinand metaphor. And what did we get instead? 'Awesome'. I have nothing against imbeciles like daly, as long as they stay away from guns, politics, TV, hospital, restaurant, prison services and cash registers.
It's a children story it's called Ferdinand? Like a bull who doesn't want to go to the bullfight, but he does. [Pause] (Forced) That's awesome. Just really depressing, the disconnect. We love you Elliott.
Elliot Smith..The Original Hipster before it was douchey and talentless. So ahead of his time.
P.S. - Elliot dressed like this before it was cool and copied by the trust fund babies of Williamsburg and SHOCKER..he actually possessed talent. Kick Ass Elliot I miss you.
Ferdinand the bull was one of my favorite stories when i was a little kid. made a great tattoo. makes sense that he chose it also considering the story of it.
@TheBestEbaumsWorlder The latter. He was naturally shy and hated having to give interviews. He probably didn't become addicted to heroin until the Figure 8 tour. He also suffered from clinical depression. I have a feeling he's suffering from both in the VH1 Daily One interview. You can see a definite difference. He's more animated here, and in the other one he can barely speak.
You know what, the '90's were actually pretty cool.... (I was a teenager during those years, and now I'm 32, so that's my perspective in 2011). Love ya', Elliott.
@bobinbed6 I don't think Elliott fits the Asperger profile. He was an extremely shy person who had been abused as a child. He struggled with depression and anxiety. Plus he had a lot of eccentricities which weren't signs of any disorder-- they were just him. But he smiled a lot, he was known for his compassion and generosity, and he had many friends.
@bobinbed6 William Todd Schultz, a psychology professor in Portland, is in the process of writing a major biography of Mr. Smith. It won't be out for a while, but it will be worth the wait. Dr. Schultz blogs for Wordpress and Psychology Today, and is very eloquent on the subject of Elliott and other artists. I just finished his new book on Diane Arbus, and it's excellent.
I think people are giving Carson Daly a bad rap, here. Elliot Smith was a fantastic musician and a brilliant lyricist, but if you track a lot of his interviews, he was really fucking difficult to hold a quality interview with. His depression and demeanor made him difficult to communicate with effectively in an interview aspect.
If the interviewer cared to talk more about the tattoo than just say 'that's awesome', he would have understood why Ferdinand the Bull was so significant to Elliott.
Yeah Carson sucks... he has no idea who he's talking to. What a sweet tattoo, I totally used to read the story of Ferdinand the Bull as a kid... hell yeah Elliot.
The fact he treats this line of pathetic and juvenile questioning with such kind patience shows me that he was a good and decent man. We always seem to lose good and decent men way too early.
Carson Dialy is a massive douche just like Jimmy Fallon said on SNL. He couldn't care less about this interview or Elliot Smith, who had more talent in his little finger that Carson Daily has in his entire family. Keep rockin' Elliot!
Elliott was never at his best in interviews, but he wasn't so bad here. He may or may not have been high, although I don't get that. He may or may not have been depressed, although I don't get that. He does come across as shy, and that's part of what made him Elliott. We are all guilty (I know I am) of trying to psychoanalyze everything he said or did. We're never going to know him now. Let's just love him anyhow.
I really identify with how awkward this interview seems to be for Elliott. It's like he's so humble, he can't really understand why he's being interviewed.
Some times the thought of his being gone makes me want to cry.
Atleast he asked about the Tattoo. Carson asking about the tattoo and Elliott telling what it was gives us the chance to research it. Carson only has so much time and he can't spend it talking about the tattoo.
This TV Host knows shite about music and it is obvious that MTV hired him only for his looks. The late 90s was when MTV really started going downhill....
Carson Daley is terrible. Look at Elliott, at 0:32, after he's asked about his tattoo at 0:27. Elliott knows the superficiality surrounding him here. It's such a rude reply to Elliott's story for his tattoo: 'that's awesome'. Carson probably wanted something equally as vacuous as his reply.
This moron interviewer can only pinch off inane little turds in reaction to a very bright man who obviously belongs on another stage somewhere, & w/ a host who has brains in his bucket.. The 'Misery' some artists suffer for their work to be recognized.
Elliott Smith was being himself.... The interview was nothing more than being, air space for the time slot... I will never believe that Elliott was "not" having an interesting moment in his life at this interview, but just simply another moment..
I don't think Carson D was trying to be a dick... Just young and green and not a great interviewer yet. Not that he's Charlie Rose now, but he's become a skilled broadcaster. I think he was just young and not sure how to deal with someone so obviously neurotic and insecure. I love Eliiott Smith, but it must have been hard as hell to interview him.
@mistabook Agreed. Yes, Elliott was a genius, but also mind-numbingly uncomfortable when he wasn't performing. Carson (although a douche) is a great interviewer, not a great musician. And Elliott was a great musician, not a great interviewee. Would you get mad at Elliott if this situation was flipped and the two were playing music together and Elliott didn't play perfectly in line with whatever crap Carson was playing?
pshh, who else wants to slap that guy for being rude to elliott at 0:26 ? if he wasn't interested why'd he ask, but i guess it IS mtv-- actually regardless i'd backhand him just because he was such a huge douche in this interview to elliott -- i got yer back, elliott. ;) <3
Jesus. I can relate so much to Elliott's lyrics and his feelings these days, and while he makes my heart feel better, there's the foreboding fact that he killed himself before he could be happy.
It's a metaphor for Elliott himself. Think of show business as a series of bull fights. He didn't even want to become a professional performer. His college roommate at the time, Neil Gust, had to talk him into it. It was always about the music with him-- never about being on display. His friend Sean Croghan confirmed that he was often physically ill from stage fright. The Oscars ceremony was only one bull fight he didn't want to attend... but he did.

This is pretty uncomfortable to watch!

I really identify with how awkward this interview seems to be for Elliott. It's like he's so humble, he can't really understand why he's being interviewed.
Some times the thought of his being gone makes me want to cry.

I wonder who is sitting across the room. Elliott keeps looking at that person throughout the interview.

FUCK YOU CARSON DALEY!!!!!!!!!! "But you're more pop right?" GRR leave that beautiful indie man alone! !!!

I miss him so much. :,( Still my favorite musician.

I will never believe that Elliott was "not" having an interesting moment in his life at this interview, but just simply another moment..
samsonl310 6 months ago
I don't think Carson D was trying to be a dick... Just young and green and not a great interviewer yet. Not that he's Charlie Rose now, but he's become a skilled broadcaster. I think he was just young and not sure how to deal with someone so obviously neurotic and insecure. I love Eliiott Smith, but it must have been hard as hell to interview him.
mistabook 6 months ago 6
@mistabook Agreed. Yes, Elliott was a genius, but also mind-numbingly uncomfortable when he wasn't performing. Carson (although a douche) is a great interviewer, not a great musician. And Elliott was a great musician, not a great interviewee. Would you get mad at Elliott if this situation was flipped and the two were playing music together and Elliott didn't play perfectly in line with whatever crap Carson was playing?

pshh, who else wants to slap that guy for being rude to elliott at 0:26 ? if he wasn't interested why'd he ask, but i guess it IS mtv-- actually regardless i'd backhand him just because he was such a huge douche in this interview to elliott -- i got yer back, elliott. ;) <3

Jesus. I can relate so much to Elliott's lyrics and his feelings these days, and while he makes my heart feel better, there's the foreboding fact that he killed himself before he could be happy.

who chose this douchbag to interview elliott
ricoadventuravideos 7 months ago
It's a metaphor for Elliott himself. Think of show business as a series of bull fights. He didn't even want to become a professional performer. His college roommate at the time, Neil Gust, had to talk him into it. It was always about the music with him-- never about being on display. His friend Sean Croghan confirmed that he was often physically ill from stage fright. The Oscars ceremony was only one bull fight he didn't want to attend... but he did.
Malocclusiontenfour 7 months ago
Ferdinand..a bull who doesn't want to go to the bull fight but goes anway...wonder why that story would appeal to Elliot?
