Yes, diesels are not available in the US for the wrangler, but in europe, the 2.8 CRD is offered. It gets better gas mileage than the 3.7, and diesel is cheaper than regular petrol in Europe (or at least it used to be). The diesel also offers more torque than the 3.7, and this makes it more capable off-road.

just to be clear: there is a jeep cherokee, but in the states they named it liberty instead of europe they call him cherokee.
and the wrangler is available with an diesel eninge. 2.8 crd (italian made) and the new 3.8 v6 gas engine.
for the cherokee (liberty) the 3.7 v6,2.4and also the 2.8 crd and a 2.5 crd.
