It lasts until the song is over, and then a little while after. But that's just for animal taming. There's also music that raises your stats or makes you not get knocked back.
However, you can play the song badly, and if you do, the magic goes wrong.

yeah but since u only control them as long as the music is continuing and only a while after the music stops then its technically they attacking only not you, see

It's basically the ability to have them attack enemies with you.
