Gah I have no idea how anyone could play on a snare drum angled AWAY from them!! I mean its what evers most comfortable for them, but I just don't know how someone could be comfortable with that. That is a truley bizar drumset, but he is a pretty good drummer!

Regarding his snare drum setup; in the marching branch playing a snare at this angle is considered normal, though playing your sticks traditional grip, not matched grip like he does and certianly not on a drumset :-p
I love the angle of his snare. I used to do that too (although now, not to as extreme an angle). It helped my rim shots with my left hand while playing traditional.
people need to leave him alone, so what if it's not your conventional drum kit... it's something he's passionate about and probably took years to build up such a collection of cymbals! i'm sure a lot of you spent a lot of money on your train sets, or your stamp collections, or whatever it is you do... he's just sharing it... save the effort and move on to another video! The drumming is pretty solid. The singing isn't spot on in places but who cares? I'm curious if the mixer was playing the songs and you were jamming along? I didn't see a headset or earphones. If not it may explain some out of tuneness on the vocal. No reference point.
@co5gtr I think the weird mastering of the sound recording is confusing you. Instead of having applied Echo or a highly delayed Reverb (I still haven't figured out which one of the two it is) just to the vocal track, he seems to 've applied it to the drum and overhead tracks too. But that's totally in-line with all the other strange aspects of this video I guess...

That being said, judging from first impressions (that's all I have at this point) Wailin Smash needs to lose some of the attitude. Maybe it's an attempt to convey confidence, but being to high on oneself is only going to turn off prospective employers. Be humble and let your drumming speak for itself. Contrary to what others have posted here, it's quite good.
I was being sincere in my criticism. Actually, I think this guy would be great for a band where the focus is on showmanship. For example, David Lee Roth's first band was basically 4 hams, 3 of them killer musicians (Steve Vai, Greg Bissonette, Billy Sheehan) putting on a very entertaining show. All 4 of them were spectacles and made no apologies. I do not know from this video if Wailin has chops on the level of Greg Bissonette, but the showmanship would be a perfect fit for an outfit like that.
didn't get the gig, but i recall the audition; S>I>R studios, Santa Monica blvd '85 ------- Billy on one side, Steve on the other.... fretworks were quite distracting... lotta fun, though.... yea, i was acquainted with this character (wailin)....... decent chap, & tho not a "technician", his showmanship befitted the scenario...
I think this guy would be difficult to be in a band with, regardless of whether or not it was his band. Confidence needs to be tempered with humanity (as in the ability to connect with others and meet their needs). Lose the narcisism Wailin and you'll be an asset to any band you're lucky enough to find yourself in.

It takes a true jackass to deflect criticism by accusing others of jealousy. No sensible band would tolerate you and your diva attitude. I haven't decided whether you're insecure or a patent egomaniac. One thing is certain, your attitude reveals why you're stuck performing musical masturbation in front of a camera. currently i swing a 28x18 b-drum ---------- soon to be replaced with a customed Longo 32x24" ------ 32" diametre (big daddie)....
gongs shall soon be upgraded to 50" / 36" --------- now that's rock n roll !!!!!

To know and jam with Wailin is to love him. We did some fun gigs together back in the day, even covered Fool and Me. I can tell you one thing, he's never lacked confidence and was always the consummate professional.

I play bass and did this show with Wailin and he blew the doors off the house. The energy, power, conviction and unbridled smashing rock drums was undeniable. The street riot that took place after the show was icing on the cake.

Nothing is more pathetic than this guy digging up old bandmates to comment on his videos. No one buys this charade except for Wailin and maybe a handful of his friends. No middle-aged burnout can expect to get away with manufacturing a make believe rock star persona. It is like trying to resuscitate a dead dog through it's ass. Silly basement videos and a few contrived comments do not a famed musician make. Plenty of guys have played good gigs without the resulting hero complex. Get real.

I also find it humorous that Mr. Smash dismisses any critic who can't produce his own singing/drumming video, as if singing drummers are the only ones capable of evaluating his offerings. Complete rubbish. You don't have to work at The Four Seasons to know when food tastes bad.
By the way, where is that "smashing solo-spot...replete with ensemble" that you promised us two months ago? Do post it, I need something new to make me chuckle.
