Model, known as the ''Fuhrers Fireman'' because he was brilliant in defensive battles, is probably getting this award at this time for some significant success on the Eastern front as March '42 is just after the counter attack in front of Moscow by the Russians, (Dec. '41)that created the first major crisis on the Eastern front. By March '42 however, the ''rasputitsa'' (spring thaw) had set in, making operations by either side virtually impossible. Probably why Model was able to leave the front.
