I don't understand a word, and I'm on the wrong side of 60 which could be cause for considerable alarm, but this performance is so full of the vibrance of life and lovely singing that I am rendered speechless in my dotage.
Hey. I have to say as an Irish speaker I would call the language Irish. I work at an Irish centre and we would often call it Irish. Older people call it Gaelic. really Gaelic refers to the language of the Gaels who are now the Irish . But its no biggie i guess as long as people are speaking, it feck the name. I think they make the differentiation in the name so not to confuse it with the Gaelic of Scotland. Has she recorded this song....? Tóg go bog é.
@WorshipInTruth, actually many people call the language Irish, for example, my Irish parents. Irish (Gaeilge) is a Goidelic language of the Indo-European language family, originating in Ireland and historically spoken by the Irish people. Irish is now spoken as a first language by a minority of Irish people, as well as being a second language of a larger proportion of the population. check it out, you might learn something.
@profmendoza DERRRP, it is GAELIC just like I said, people may actually call it the "Irish language" which I was not aware of, but that would be akin to saying we speak "American" in the U.S.
@WorshipInTruth again: no. The official government website of Ireland calls it Irish "English and Irish (Gaelic) are the official languages of the Republic of Ireland. Irish is spoken daily." however, everyone also speaks English. "(look in encyclopedias too, there's often a wealth of information in them - hell, just google it). So pull that bus over to the side of the pretentiousness turnpike for a moment and realize that even if you were right, you're kind of a jerk.
@WorshipInTruth ps - I would imagine there are a great many things you are not aware of that are true, so you might not want to rely only on what you with you right now in terms of knowledge. just a thought.
@WorshipInTruth Haha maybe you should do some research before calling people 'friggin idiots.' As an Irish person who speaks Irish on a daily basis, I'd like to point out that what you said was incredibly ignorant. Don't act so pretentious when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. The language is called Irish or Gaeilge, never Gaelic. And comparing it to people saying you speak American makes no sense as the US doesn't have a native language while Ireland does. Just saying.
Gaelic whether irish or scots and welsh remain europes oldest languages(and basque). Therefore europes oldest memories are contained therein. Bígí dílis don ghaeilge . Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.
Yeah. clearly...I was just kidding. It's a damned hard language to learn if you weren't raised in it, which was kind of the point of the humor (like, man, is this language _really_ "other"). I can speak enough to ask for water, bread, whiskey, or a bathroom, "what are you doing?", and a little cussing, plus the odd phrase here or there.
Whats astounding gaelicnicu is that if you listen to ancient Irish and Hebrew they sound very very close. They even buried their dead in similar matter. And worshiped on High Hills. There is a theory that we Irish may be desendants of Israelite diaspora
Its not an ancient language its alive anyway the guy oshan in the band who plays the fiddle in this band danu is my third cousin and why is everyone so mezmorised in marianne ive met her like five times please don't ddrool you perverts
Im sorry, I didnt mean to say this is a dead language I just meant videos like this share this language with other parts of the world who wouldnt otherwise hear it, it is a lovely language!
yeah, tried but it still survived, not as strong but survived all the same esp in remote areas and there are plenty of people learning it and keeping it going.
learn it! There is a lot of material on the net to help you, and you can find a tutor from organizations such as comhaltas and daltai na gaeilge. Irish is a beautiful and rich langauge you will be gald of your efforts
well learn it then, JackandViva! i'm learning it myself. we have to bring back this beautiful language; one person at a time. my kid isn't born yet; but i promise that the first words he'll ever hear will be in the Tongue of the Gael
