I eat that pepper almost daily. I guess it's just a culture. I was once dared to eat the whole thing, and I did. It was so hot. But I guess if you grow up eating stuff like this, it wouldn't be a big deal. Like Durians (the smelly fruit). I personally don't like it because it's mushy, but not because it "smell" (it doesn't smell that much). It's actually really sweet.
