Just as a note to all those 'Gilmour's just making up the numbers' commenters, remember he started out playing rock and roll for the best part of a decade before he joined Pink Floyd...
Mick Green doesn't half play a blinder here. R.I.P Mick, and thanks for making me pick a guitar up in the first place. Oh Yeah, Mr.Gilmour holds his own :-)
Imagine being in Liverpool finally for the first time..your on Penny Lane and you walk into a little local shop and pick up the newspaper? And he headlines read "Paul McCartney Announces his Return to The Cavern!" That happened to me! I was in Liverpool because I had lived in London back in the 80's& wouldn't do any touristy stuff as I was a local! My Gf flew me out on a surprise to do all this in 99..on a no cancel RT tix..of which my return date was the day of the gig! So thx fopstra 4this:)
Just a reminder to all you Gilmour fans ( I am One too) - The Guitar hero in this line-up is Mick Green! This is McCartney and Green territory not Pink Floyd land.
The way he wrote that song at the beginning... he left solo space for George.. that's a bona-fide George Harrison solo at 2:27 to 3:19. Even though George was still alive then, he must have missed him... ah well.
I was there saturday 22 march 2010.The place was rocking , write your name on the wall and dig the great live music to lots of beer.Best pound ive ever spent
@metsman1019 nah its still there on the same site but slightly altered .reopened in the late 80's after being filled in then excavated.the original bricks were refired and the exit and entrance swapped for safety reasons . go to the cavern website it tells you of the history from way back when.and EVERYBODY LISTEN! it was NOT knocked down and rebuilt over the road OK! that is the cavern PUB , opened on the back of the success of the club .rock n roll will never die
i go there a lot and even though its not excactly the same place i swear i have felt a ghostly presence of george of john in certain parts , as if somehow they are looking on at us still enjoying the place , nothing creepy but i know they are watching us
If you wanted a real beatle experience, you should have gone to the Jacarander or ye crack for a few scoops. Original drinking places of the Beatles and they haven't changed since.
I wonder what the Beatles would have thought way back then, if they would have been told a day would come when you would have to listen to a few 60-somethings if you wanted true rock'n roll.
my piano teacher at school loves the beatles, mccartney is his least favorate, but he saw this and had trouble admitting to me that he was now a mccartney fan
i was there(liverpool) for the match everton-aek athens. and i was for a wile at the cavern club. it was wonderful. i crying because this was a dream from my childrens years.
I started reading this thread wondering if anyone would even know who Mick Green is. I'm glad to see at least a few fans remember him and the Pirates. I wish there was more Pirates on YouTube. In the meantime this show will do.
Brilliant. Thanks for making up the numbers Dave G but this is completely this is completely the territory of the fabulous Mick Green. Get Out Of Their Skulls by The Pirates. now!
Mick Green, what a guitarist. I enjoyed this show for what it was - a bunch of old players getting together to have a blow, hardly a money making venture or a statement making show. Just having a play because they can.
I agree completely. It's after watching videos like this that I wish John and George were still alive. That way, the four of them could settle their differences and do some real concerts like they used to. I think Paul thought that by going back to the Cavern he could recapture the essence of those days. But I guess he didn't realize that by adding the cheesy lights and other superfluous Hollywood tricks he diminished the raw naturalness that made those Cavern shows magic.
Dave Gilmour and Mick Green session musicians ?? What you want is for a man of 57 (as he was then) to sound like a kid of 19, the same critisism was made of Elvis in his later years - its just not possible. You may be interested to know that I first saw the Beatles at The Cavern in Nov 1961when they were an interval band for a jazz band from Manchester called The Zenith Six. Amongst the numbers they played were, The Sheik of Araby and Red Sails in the Sunset. Hardly rock n roll classics.
Didn't recognize gilmour at first but yeah I remember hearing that they were playing together. Still doesn't negate my point. Gilmour is just as guilty then and should have known better.
My original point is: If they had played Sheik of Araby that would have been perfect! I don't want to hear rock&roll classics. The high-ho silver song that they play isn't a classic either! So I don't get your point on that. My point is, he sounds just like this in a stadium, so why even play Cavern?
He's playing at The Cavern because he wanted to have some fun on Millenium Eve by going back to his roots, simple as that. Great to hear Mick Green again with his own scratchy guitar playing (look up Johnny Kidd and the Pirates if you've not heard of him, he was brilliant). Just enjoy it for what it is, its not even the original Cavern.
you're absolutely right. Yeah, not even the original cavern... BUT, I do think it would have been cool if they would have lost the tech sound guys.... Gotten an old gibson amp, and an old fender deluxe from '57, and maybe some old guitars like an early rick or hofner guitar... ANd just rocked out with an old mic and shitty P.A. system. THAT would have been great.
This is the McCartney I love but I agree with you freezazoid, You wanna go back to the Cavern, then REALLY go back. Oh....and turn the newly installed A.C off while your at it.
well the real cavern doesn't even exist anymore, but doing a rock set with shitty amps and an okay p.a. system would be pretty sweet. Maybe not having that great musicians behind him would help get a grittier sound too.
@freezazoid the idea was to play a small more private show- its more personal when its not thousands of people and you can see the performers live not on a screen
no I have your mom for that.... if you don't get my point and you're getting so pissed off because I want paul to play a rocking set like they used to... then shuv-off and listen to some shitty music already. I love paul... don't like this set. Simple as that.
No it's not.. This is the updated one Hofner gave him in 1963. The "original" Hofner (Called the Cavern Bass) was stolen in 1969. You can tell the Cavern Bass very easily because the pickups are close together and "Hofner" is written in script on the headstock vertically.
Great rock`n roll. Paul and his hofner bass guitar still rocks. And today, the ultimate legend from mtv looks better and younger than at that show. he is a phanomoen! good save john, paul george and ringo.
Mick Green, of The Pirates-the best footage from the 70's seems to have gone from youtube at present-he has influenced a lot of guitarists including Pete Townshend and Wilko Johnson
Quite remarkable!! .... I seem to be addicted to watching this clip - 'Brown eyed handsome man' - What a track!!!! The whole band just creates something so good to listen to!
David Gilmour! How come the video says nothing about him? He's only one of the best guitarists who ever lived.
