  • 8bitdame sent me. Thanks!

I love this game. It's a shame not enough women play it. It's a shame not enough people play it.

  • Beautiful Queen! Can I be a rook pawn ,so i will not die soon :D ?

  • Biutiful Alexandra! Thanks for sharing your experiences anb best wishes... Best regards from Mexico.

  • I don't really see why there has to be a women's world championship event...there should just be the one main event and both sex's compete....should make no difference in chess between genders.

  • @SuperTinkerhell 90% of the chess players are men. It would be completely unfair to have only one chess championship as men would always win. By the way, in the men chess championship, women can play.

  • Playing serious chess is a great experience. It's just abundant food for your hungry mind. Much needed workout for your brain. A Chess game is 5 hours of meditation. For the next 4-5 hours Chess board becomes your only reality and Universe. Your existence will be limited to a board. Chess pieces become part of your greater soul. It's just an amazing feeling like an out of body experience. You'd have to experience it to understand how it feels. Every child deserves to be taught this great art.

  • me.. she is beautiful...

  • if there wasn't another guy dancing during the last dance scene i would have thought she was tripping on angel dust in the streets

  • Chempionka I KRASAVICA

  • You danced very nice ;)

  • Chess was originated in india, then to iran then to europe by arab muslim tradesmen who invaded persia and finaly to the U.S. Great journey of chess Besttt mental board game everrrr.

  • @ChessQueen What do you guys write on the paper after playing each move??

  • @JawadKarimKhan Chess players keep score of the games by writing down the moves, so that later on, they can play back the game and analyze it to see where mistakes were made.

  • @eeeeeriickkkkk Unfortunately I usually don't have time to give lessons, rather I take lessons with top men GM's so I can improve further.

  • congrats!!!!!

  • 5 People are afraid of the combination of "hot and smart"

  • Congratulations champ :)

  • Your voice and accent are so SEXY.

Do you think you could seriously challenge Garry Kasparov at chess?

  • @widebody123 I was thinking the same about Alexandra's voice, quite seductive, I could listen to her for hours !

  • So how does one write down the moves if left-handed?

  • @widebody123 I don't understand your question. If one is left-handed, I suppose one would write the moves with one's left hand. You are free to write the moves with any hand you please.

  • @ChessQueen Most players move and write with their right hand. Widebody123's question concerns writing for lifted handed players.

  • @SpecialGuy21 It is allowed to play chess and to write down the moves with any hand you wish.

  • You were just lucky to beat Pia. Next time you will go down!

    Sweden ftw!!

  • You were just lucky to beat Pia. Next time you eill go down!

    Sweden ftw!!

  • good luck to you from Israel !

    Удачи вам !

    מזל טוב ובהצלחה!

  • Congratulations Alexandra! This is a fun video, and you look amazing in the national dress - your father must have been beside himself!

  • Pryamo kak skazka kakaya to! Zdorovo realno.

  • shes sooo damn hot!!!! go go go russian girl

  • What's up with all the flashes during the game against Y. Hou? Isnt that against the rules or atleast very annoying and distracting?

    Anyways nice win :)

  • i really do not understand why it is that people view chess players as less than human.

look at how this female of the species so clearly demonstrates her desire to convince us that she has achieved something worthwhile, creating this fanciful storyline of personal conquest in her carefully constructed fantasy-world.

surely, we, as a species, must redefine our relationship to these remarkable creatures.

  • It is too bad they don't let the women's chess champion meet the men's chess champion in a match. That would settle a lot things over the board as it should be. She is a fantastic player.

  • @PhillipCreeper As far a I know, women are entitled to enter in the overall world championships just as the men are, they'd have to go through the qualification process in exactly the same way. I don't believe they are exempt from competing, and I think Judit and maybe others entered the qualification stages in earlier years.

  • Coolest dress ever..!

  • Najlepsa si!

Zelim ti puno srece i u buducnosti i da ti se svi snovi ostvare!

  • I hope you keep competing - you're great, Alexandra.

  • Why are Russian women so beautiful?!

  • @Averagebum2, a very good question. I am American and am now 29 and when I was 19 moved to Paris, France, as a model. I traveled to numerous countries in Europe and Asia and I can say from experience in the institution which celebrates human physical beauty that Russian women are probably the most beautiful in the world. The east in general, actually. They have similarities about them. For ex, I can see when a woman or man is from eastern Europe, usually. I don't know why they're so beautiful.

  • i want to be like her=Dshe's pretty=D

  • Hello everyone, I have a question: why the chess championship is separated by sex??

  • hi alexandra , congrats for being a title holder of chess queen, just only now, i browse u, beating magnus carlsen in one of ur game, hope u cud, go far in the world of chess, just consider me as ur avid fan,:-) by the way i'm oliver from philippines, anyway, good luck to ur career :-) i wish u more success alexandra

  • you won people's hearts not only with your beauty but with your beautiful brain too!!! keep it up! best wishes!

  • Extremely well done. And also, you look very beautiful in that dress. :)

  • have you ever competed for the overall World Championship? I think you could go far :)

  • @mattfca I did play in the overall blitz chess championship and was able to beat top world players such as Carlsen, Anand, Aronian, Gashimov, Morozevich, Grischuk, and several others, with several draws against Karpov, Leko.

  • @ChessQueen I salute you.

  • cute video.beauty with brains

  • Now how does it feel to be famous? (:

  • uhm..excuse me cn u tell me what ppl write during a match on the paper??

  • @abhinayan27 Chess players write chess moves on their score sheets. For example 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 could be written if a Ruy Lopez opening is played.

  • @ChessQueen but why do u need to write??:s

  • Comment removed

  • @adhdboy699 No you're not allowed to write future plans, only the current moves of the game.

  • Many thanks for your story and pretty games. Good luck for the next champ

  • Many thanks for your story and pretty games. Good luck for the next champ

  • no canadians :(

  • to @ GoldenWC :Why don't you try to play against her to see if she is more better than you stupid macho men. Are you intimidated for a smart woman , not those blond stupid girls that they are stupid enough to be with you.

    Grow up man.

Please Alex ignore those stupid people that they can't appreciate the beauty of life because all that they have is ugliness in their miserable life , there are unhappy with their life and just want to spread their disease.

  • Why don't you try to play against her to see if she is more better than you stupid macho men. Are you intimidated for a smart woman , not those blond stupid girls that they are stupid enough to be with you.

    Grow up man.

  • 46 diamonds and 3 sapphires...?!?!!

  • Are the reply given by Kosteniuk herself...or someone else replies for her ; I wonder how do you manage with time ..??

  • @babaikaushik I do my best not to waste any time doing unnecessary things :-)

  • Alexandra, we are excited and waiting for you in Colombia

  • She is not world chess champ, she is WOMEN's World chess champ. No woman has ever become real world chess champ.

  • @GoldeWC I clearly state in the subtitle to the video that this is "the story on how I became the 12th Women's World Chess Champion". By the way, on this same channel, I think you will enjoy seeing my video on how I beat the men's world champion Vishy Anand our recent blitz game.

  • @ChessQueen So you beat him in blitz? I'm no good at blitz chess, and I really value well thought out tournament games. If you play him in a game with at least 30 mins please post it I would really like to see the reasons for each move in the game. I would really appreciate it if you post it I love to see GM's play.

  • @ChessQueen ha ha ha you dogged him

  • @GoldeWC why are you so bitter

  • @GoldeWC - A stupid comment. The game is REAL chess. Understand? Perhaps not.

  • Bravo! Thank you for sharing. It made me very happy to see how happy you were. You deserve every moment of it. Thank you for your inspiring words. You're not only a wonderful chess player but also a wonderful person.

  • Real Queen !

  • Congratulations! You dance very well. :]

I hope you can retain your title.

  • Alexandra, your games are both cautious and brave! We have played twice (1-1 score) on ICC before you became World Champion and Carlsen Killer :) Keep up the beautiful games and impressive results!! Tsov-Noog

  • hello Alexandra congratulations for this moment of u life u are a very great chess player and u deserve to be on the top all this ceremony was so fantastic and as u said its the dream of many young chess players and not only u made it look so beautiful..u re really a fantastic chess Queen...bravo

  • Hi again Alexandra. Sorry, I don't mean to contradict your last reply for me, but at 4:37 on the video above you said you were "very nervous"...

  • Yes of course the final of the world championship was so important for me that I was nervous, but generally that feeling disappears immediately as the game starts and the clock starts ticking :-)

  • thats an amazing opening ceremony

...is chess a big part of culture over there? televised, news worthy?

  • Yes chess is a big part of Russian culture. There were daily TV reports of the World Championship on all the top channels. Some of them have been posted on the chess video site ChessMovies.

  • Hi Alexandra, as the reigning champion, are you nervous about the coming World Championship in Turkey at the end of this year, where you'll have to defend your title?

  • Hi owenivor! I'm never nervous before tournaments. I prepare for them very much.

  • we must be grateful with alexandra for being such a great chess popularizer. that`s very important

  • Thank you for this lovely video. I am very happy you won.

  • Alexandra is not only an awesome champion. By so gracefully translating to English and taking us on a tour of it, she honored Russia, FIDE and the sport of Chess and allowed us to experience something special. She also showed us what a real lady from Russia can become and how she should behave.

  • very impressive. 5 star chest queen.

I challenge you to a game of chest via YouTube. We can video tape each move until the end where I capture your King.

  • why are Russians good at chess? Two reasons;

    1) ancient Greek educational system, which actually develops the brain.

    2) Russia is fucking cold; what else are they gonna do?

  • xD that second reason is too funny.

  • well, you definetely look like a queen!

  • Good work! very good work!=)

  • Does anyone know who manufactured the pieces used and if they are available in the USA.

  • I believe those are electronic chess boards made by DGT.

  • Thanks so much for getting back to me .... I believe u r right and I am now pursuing this lead.

Thanks again ... btw just received your cd-rom Alexandra Teaches Chess ..... will give it to my grandson ( who is 5) very soon .... I'll let u know how it works out if u like

  • Best wishes to your grandson, 5 years is a good age to start chess. Let me know how it goes :-)

  • Haha, its really funny how they sing song about chess.

  • That's awesome. Congratulations!

  • Very pretty and attractive you are.

  • Very Admirable!

You are a REAL Chess Queen!

    CONGRATULATIONS!

    Thanks for sharing!,

I love Chess and I always practice with my

    Blessings to you from SISTALINDA.

  • Have a wonderful 1 year anniversary Grandmaster Alexandra (The Great) Kosteniuk!

  • she should change her handle to ChessGoddess

  • adigama ada yahtnah !

  • She's a real queen!

  • You are so awesome, i started playing chess recently and your game are spectacular... don't lessen to these sexist feeble minded people, women can comepete with men if given the chance.

  • What Sweet Chess darling she !!!

    I just loved her comments

  • ChessQueen, I really admire your wisdom and strength!Just keep on playing GREAT chess and these croacking frogs would shut up.Remember that a fruitful tree is always thrown by stones.God Bless you and your family!

  • Cool that you posted this and congratulations. Hope you continue with your success. :]

  • I hold this truth to be painfully self-evident: nobody is created equal.

Congratulation on all of your victories now and to come.

  • media overcooked!

  • Kosteniuk World Chess Champion :)

    you are amazing woman :)

  • It is good more women are playing chess these days. I think on one knows what potential women have. So many are now far better than most men on the earth. Kosteniuk for example, is a GM and most men are not even IMs.

I am a man myself ! And my ex wife hated chess !

  • play with world men champion i just wonder what might happen.

  • I'd probably lose, is that what you wanted to hear?

    Best chess wishes to you!

  • so women and men are not equal then right?

  • In some ways, men and women are equal, and in others they are not.

  • i think you are greater then us.

  • We are all equal under God.

  • He's just stupid. Don't listen to him!

  • GM Kosteniuk already beaten a lot of men like Luke McShane of England, etc.

  • i just love this queen its a pitty she is married. I love her accent. i just dont understand why men and women does not play mixed as this a brain sport. Just play a bigggg match and be the world champion against the men champion of the world for the big final.Easy and simple just do it.

  • they do play mixed if the woman is strong enough. Judith Polgar has crushed some of the worlds top-players. Kosteniuk has also commented on some blitz games where she killed men.

  • Men are better then women in chess only because more men take it seriously than women. If just as many women took it seriously, there would be more Polgars in the world. I've always thought a woman's world championship is sexist as it reinforces the idea that women can't compete with men. I remember when the idea of a woman in an IT department was considered impossible. But you now see many women programmers!

  • Why is there a womans world chess title? Are they implying that women are mentally weaker to men?

  • The famous chess player Savielly Tartakower in 1921 explained why, in his opinion, women played chess worse than men: "The only reason why women have not yet achieved virtuosity in the field of chess is probably that chess is not a proper art but also depicts a battle with the aspiration of victory; attainment of victory always calls for a certain ruthlessness, which is precisely a feature far too little present in the fair sex."

  • bobby fischer said a lot worse hahahaha.

  • That's true! But in the last 20 years the level of women at chess has greatly improved, and he certainly could not give knight odds to the first 20 women in the world, or he would face certain defeat, no doubt about that.

  • It has nothing to do with ruthlessness or aspiration for victory. Men are simply superior to women. It's not a big deal though, and that's why there are two different leagues (not only in chess, but all sports.)

  • That's a very sexist comment. There are some fields where women are superior to men. The only thing that women can not argue with is that men are generally physically stronger, but that does not explain everything as concerns chess, since there are other factors such as the low number of women playing chess competitively and how late women started playing chess.

  • Incorrect. I am not sexist. Stating the truth does not make me sexist as does the fact I believe unquestionably we men and women deserve equal rights. I do not look down to women just for being born as the inferrior gender.

Just look at the "best" of most anything and you will find an overwhelming amount of males. Some examples include most wealth, highest IQ, best chess player, "best" serial killer, and best memory.

Men built the world and run it currently. No need to fret about it.

  • Women are better gatherers and better at taking care of babies, as that's how we evolved during the hunter-gatherer era. Unfortunately for women, the hunter specialisation was more relevant to modern skillsets.

  • Now who's best at giving birth?

  • Aww! Now, you are checkmating men with the female superiority. But I love your intelligence. I remember you metnioned Chess is sexy...and at that time,I was looking at your pic. I guess sexy, intelligent people find chess sexy. I wholly agree with you. By the way, I am a fan of your voice too. Alexandra, do you sing too?

  • Hi!

    Thanks for your kind message.

I do like to sing, but I'm afraid nobody would like to listen to me sing apart from my close family ;-)

  • I am sure you never tried to sing in public; otherwise, you would have been a singing sensation too. The world already bows to your beauty, in the body and on the board. Now, let us hear your voice in a song too.

  • When I first heard your voice in some game commentary, I was... like...what softness, girl...you are the only beauty in the world....Beautiful in everything from voice to chess....tell the truth. Are you from Russia or from somewhere in the skies?

  • You really believe that?

Women are so much better at so much things. If you remember, men always oppressed women until very recent years. So that makes their accomplishments even more amazing.

The only reason why there are 2 leagues is due to prejudice in the past in sports.

I'm not saying both sexes are equal, they are both equal in potential.

Congratulations for everything Alexandra, from a starting chess player in Portugal. :)

  • I wonder if you took the ratio of women who were interested in Chess to the number of women IMs and GMs and compared it to the ratio of males interested in Chess to the number of male IMs and GMs what would be the result. It seems to me that females are doing fine in Chess.

  • You are saying that a greater percentage of women that play chess are GMs, compared to men?

That may be explained by the fact that more men play chess than women.

( in a bigger sample, you get more variety)

I never said women aren't doing well in chess, where did you get that?

  • i think female chess players were traditionally less trained than male chess players but now they are building up their tradition i hope i will see some female chess champions to beat male chess champions!

but i also agree with Savielly Tartakower about the ruthlessness. personally i feel extremely aggressive when i play chess, even though i am only an amateur!

  • I love you!!!

  • Hey ChessQueen are you relly Alexandra Kosteniuk Because I played you in a simul! (of course I lost)

  • wow beautiful movie!

    greetz Nancy Mozer

    Reyes.

  • the kids in this video are sooooo cute! Also, Alexandra Kosteniuk is very beautiful, and regal, what a women's chess champion! Congratulations!

  • Is Kosteniuk a Ukrainian name?

  • Yes it is. Usually all last names in "iuk" are Ukrainian. My Dad is originally from the Ukraine, but we lived in Russia since I was born.

  • Garry's surname was changed from Kasparian to Kasparov (if I'm not mistaken) to make it sound more russian. Why is Kosteniuk not changed to Kostenova to make it also sound russian? Since AK is representing Russia and not Ukraine.

  • Kasparov changed his name from Weinstein, which is a whole different story than simply trying to sound more Russian. As far as me, I like my last name, even if it is of Ukrainian origin.

  • Garry's father is Kim Weinstein, who later died when Garry was still young (7 years old I think). Garry then adopted his mother's Kasparian name, which was then changed to Kasparov. So was it just a matter of preference, whether you would change the name or not? If you like your current surname, I would not argue with that.

  • I'm not really used to russian names, I just notice that men ends with 'ov' like Karpov, and that women ends with 'ova' like Stefanova (hmm, i think antoanneta is bulgarian? hehe). Correct me if i said anything wrong, ChessQueen. Thank you.

  • No harm done, it's always fine to ask a question!

    Best chess wishes to you!

  • Thank you very much. That was so kind of you to wish me that. Best wishes to you as well.

  • i'd like to see Kosteniuk vs judith polgar match

  • I agree I am also a chess player and that would be exciting

  • Lovely. I am glad you are staying in the US. My grandfather left Russia to move to US, too. I hope all goes well for you. Best wishes.

  • Hey there, congrats on winning the championship. I'm a guy but I'm really proud that you're representing the women really strongly! I hope to see you take part in some men's competition soon :) Oh yeah, I'm from ASIA! Which is far away from Russia. isn't it amazing that your efforts are being recognized by people living across the world? :) You are a true champion!

  • Not to sound shallow and i'm sure you've heard it many times before, but you look so beautiful and radiant when you are up on stage and they are applauding the world champion. I hope your husband doesn't get jealous, but he is a very lucky man. Good luck in the future with your chess, and i wish you many future successes.

  • Alexandra, now that you have won the Women highest chess crown, is there a possibility that you will compete in men tourneys? I'm pretty sure that your presence in these competitions would be amazingly good for the chess world! Please, Alexandra!! :)

  • I have often participated in men's tournaments, and I plan to continue to do so. Playing in the strongest tournaments one can find is the best way to progress. For top women players, it's a great chance to play with men, little by little, it narrows down the small edge men have.

  • i'm curious how a man could ever have any edge in this game.

i would think that when it came to an intellectual game such as chess, you would only gain an advantage by knowing more than your opponent and/or being more prepared to play them.

can you explain what you mean by edge? perhaps it's just that there are more men than women who play chess so women have less edge in coed competitions for that reason alone?

  • Psychological studies have shown that Spatial Pattern Recognition in men is a bit better than women. This gives them a slight edge in Chess, as pattern recognition forms a very big part of the game. Thats why its great to see women challenging men; since that would mean either their spatial pattern recognition was better from childhood(rare), or a precise childhood training developed and altered their skills (as in the famous case of Polgar sisters)

  • great documentary and congratulations on your victory! I think chess is a great game and wish to get better at it so i love hearing about chess success stories such as this. Thank you for your video :)

  • Well Deserved, congradulations!

  • I learned chess as a child and was in the USCF,but I stopped entering tournaments in my early teens.I grew to dislike the human aspect of competing with people who were so emotionally invested in winning.I just liked the game.I still do,but now I only play the computer.Your ability to focus and create under all of that pressure is amazing!...Best of luck with your campaign to bring chess to the new generation, and congratulations on all of your successes.

  • In Russian being a Grandmaster has always been very prestigious, Grandmasters are very respected. Here in the USA, I try to show people chess is cool and that chess can help people achieve more in life, especially young people.

  • Thank you so much; I love chess and love seeing chess promoted! I believe children gain a great deal of skills by studying chess at a young age.

On a seperate note, can I please just ask you, do you think men Grandmasters are stronger than woman Grandmaster?

  • The WGM (Woman GrandMaster) is a women's only title. Above that there is the IM (International Master Men) title and the GM (GrandMaster Men) which is the highest title available to either men or women. Only 13 or so women hold the highest GM (Men) title. I was the 10th woman in the history of chess to earn that GM title. The GM title is much higher than the WGM title.

  • forgive me, I didn't explain myself correctly...Do you think Men Grandmasters play better than women? that they are stronger? Not the title, the actual level of play?

  • Apart from Titles such as GM (Grandmaster Men) there is also an ELO rating which gives a good idea of a player's strength. A GM with 2600 is normally somewhat stronger than a GM rated 2500, although that's not always the case in individual games as you can see from this channel since I have beaten many 2700 players (including Onischuk in classic time control) while I have had a top rating of FIDE 2540 and USCF 2590.

  • Thank you very much for explaining

  • Dear ChessQueen I have played against you in the super nationals 4 in a simul
