  • I agree Tomb Raider helped in bringing plat formers to 3D

  • Interghost sent me to your channel saying you did some of the best video reviews and I must admit he is right. Your vids are some of the best I've watched in ages and tomb raider is one of my favourite games of all time. Keep up the good work.

  • Oh man, I hated Tomb Raider. I had the worst time trying to control Lara. Those controls were miserable. Lol.

  • nvm how big the platforms are :p

i always suck at platform games

  • i also have to say that i had no problems using keyboard, in a matter of fact i couldnt even play tomb raider on the PSX that good after playing it on PC, because i just couldnt get used to the controller - but TR and TR2 are absolutley awesome games, i remember the rumor that you can see lara naked under the shower in the cutscene at the end of TR2, if you manage to play through without saving and dying... erm, never tried that though...

  • @huhabab

I would say from experience that to play the game without dying or saving is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Anyway, I'm sure some gaming expert would have a cheat to bypass this problem, so I think it's definitely an urban myth.

  • i play this game whean i was in 5th grade of primary school but i dont remember how is called is tomb raider what??

  • It sounded like you said "Coors Tomb Raider." lol

  • I can't play Tomb Raider on my PC, I have the game but it's too old for my computer, I've heard of using DOSBox and I installed it and everything, But theres no sound and I don't know how to save it correctly :( Guess i'll have to buy it for PS1.

  • @Bryrida There are some patches and such you can download to help you play it on PC. But, yeah, if you can get it for the PS1, that's the route I'd take.

  • i never really got into tomb raider.. but it lead to Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2 which were some of my personal favorite games which were somewhat underrated

  • Tomb Raider FTW!!

  • Easy there Matt...LOL.

  • I agree with you... Angelina Jolie is so beautiful but she was not enough to fit in Lara's character.

    thanks for this man.

just seeing this I feel the same emotion as in the past, kind of mystical n' eager for adventure.

  • Of course, this is 1996-7, and yet in 1992 you could set Daggerfall to WASD and mouse look, with C for crouch, etc.....! So either Daggerfall was ahead of the curve, or Tomb raider wasn't. So Matt. maybe you should have had WASD when you tried the PC version and therefore maybe TR isn't the totally perfect game people believe! :) In fact, TR was the first PC game to suffer from being a console conversion.

  • Thank you so much for covering this game. I am a big TR fan and I just love Lara Croft! She's my role model. Thanks again!

  • tomb raider is the greatest i fell in love with it as a kid and still love it even though they messed up the story line. though if i never heard of it ,this video would definitely make me want to play it. great job!

  • Very nice! This brings memories back! In 1994 I was stunned by the beautiful graphics and the atmospheric music.

  • Great review Matt!

Keep up the good work :)

  • Thanks, Zergar!

  • Great video love lara croft, I played tomb raider underworld and it seems the tomb raider games keeps getting better and better!!!.

  • Awesome review. And Tomb raider is one of my favourite dudettes in videogame

  • Thanks for the comment!

  • Great review of a great game! I also really loved this game (and especially the first, I gradually lost interest in the later Tomb Raider games -- I think they somehow lost some of the "magic" of the first.) Anyway, keep them coming, I never miss it.

By the way, thanks for the bookmarks! Too bad I had already finished Vintage Games, so I didn't get to use it for that.

  • Yeah, same here. I started on the second one but never finished it. The first one, though, had me riveted from start to finish. Thanks for commenting!

  • Highly recommend finishing Tomb Raider II. As amazing as the first one is, the second is better in my opinion. You haven't played a TR level until you've tried The Temple of Zian. :) Definitely give it another go!

  • @yesrushdt

Agree totally........I think TR2 shades the first one. Yes, the level you mentioned is great......and epic.....but what were the designers on when they developed the Floating Islands Level. The music, sound effects and overall feel is just weird !

Another thing.....how is that level connected to the previous one....how did she get there ???

  • Regarding controlling with a keyboard, I've never had any problem with it (this coming from someone who started playing Tomb Raider on the Playstation). The only drawback is the larger size, but all of the buttons are centered around the arrow keys and they're all very easy to access.

Mapping the keys to my Logitech Cordless Rumblepad was a breeze though. It controls as good as it did on the console version.

  • Stick to your guns. I played this on the PC and like you I got along fine with the keyboard.

Not sure about the PS1 version but the PC version had a nice tutorial where you could learn all the controls and all the moves.

  • Awesome review Matt!!

just a tiny sound issue, your mic rubs a bit on your t-shirt.

It's funny you just posted this because I just finished TR Anniversary and I had an amazing time. such immersion!!

I remember playing the original on PC when it came out but like you said the controls were horrid and I stopped after a half hour.

I always wanted to play this classic though.

Recently I got the soundtrack and fell in love with the theme and decided to pick up the remake.

    Loved it.

  • Sorry about the mic. I'll try to fix it for the next show.

    Thanks for commenting!

  • no worries, always a pleasure.

  • Tomb Raider was occasionally quite hard game. That giant torso boss was very tough one, had to shoot it so much. Imo those newer Tomb Raiders lack the charm that those older ones have.

  • Great review! It's not the amount of polygons you have, its how you use them! Brought back memories when you mentioned A VooDoo card. The first one I had boasted (i think) 12 megs. I think they should have a contest to see who is the coolest video game girl. Lara or Jill Valentine, Clair Redfield, etc. Like to see all those polygons together on one screen! O.k. my hard drive is over-heated.

  • heheh!

  • Watching this video, and being a huge fan of the Jumping Flash series of first person platformers, I can't help but comment on that game. It was a very different way of doing 3D platforming than most other games, but I think it worked equally well. It may not have been as versatile as the Mario 64 formula in the long term, but I think It did a better job capturing the fun factor of 2D platformers than any other game of it's kind. There's never been anything quite like it since.

  • awe man tomb raider, i barely remember playing this game when i was like 5. i remembet i used to go to my cousins house and i'd play his ps1 and he had this game with a bunch of demos on it. i remember being to scared to play this but one day i actually got the courage to play it but couldnt figure out the controlls. another great review.

  • This may seem completely random but, have you ever played the Lucas Arts game Full Throttle? The indiana jones quote at the end made me think of the old point-and-click adventures. Full Throttle being the best in my opinion. Its awesome, grab a DOS emulator and fire it up, I think you would dig it!

  • Yup! I've played all of the LucasArts adventures that I know of. I liked them all, though The Dig, Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, and of course FT really stand out. I also enjoyed Loom and the Indiana Jones games.

  • the clipping issues + popping in the playstation 1 was surprising (I never owned one). very poor looking imo

  • Another great video - good work :)

I remember getting the Tomb Raider 3DFX patch online for my Voodoo 1 and being blown by the game and the visuals!

Never finished it though - I think I'll have to re-visit it one day...

  • Master Chief: pfffft. I think Lara's appeal lies in being able to combine Western (sexist perhaps) notions of beauty within a character who is anything but sexist in terms of character and personality. One wonders if Lara's personality would've been as appealing contained within a less polygon extreme avatar. On this, if Uncharted had a more interesting avatar, the xbox360 vs. ps3 war would be well and truly over.

  • I upgraded my pc to play this, it was only getting like 10fps.. man this thing was revolutionary (well it felt like it)

  • ahh, another great episode for matt chat :) funny I used to play tomb raider a lot, and fantasize about ms croft, but it never occured to me that this was a platform game :) I guess I was more interested in lara's boobies than the game :) it's a great game though, and lately I bought an anniversary edition from valve online for just 5$ ! which was a great value.

btw, the 'secret' word is Tyranthraxus, the villain of the curse of the azure bonds :) nice try ! I'm a die hard gold box fan too :)

  • Ding ding! And we have a winner! Nice work. I didn't expect anyone to get it with only four letters, but I guess you must have put two and two together. :)

Shoot me your snail in a PM and I'll mail you'll the book.

  • "Tyranthraxus" Nice! I clearly remember this now, but I never would have guessed it myself.

  • Nice review. I actually never played any of the Tomb Raider games, not sure why... just never got around to it.

    It looks pretty cool.

Wasn't it developed by the developers of Rick Dangerous, btw?

  • Looks like it was, laffer35, though I'm not familiar with Rick Dangerous. Tell me about it ! :)

  • Rick Dangerous was a very popular (as in very well known, I guess it was pirated a lot) Amiga game back in the day... and it's a game you either hate or love.

It's a bit like Tomb Raider in that you control this little Indy inspired character and run around various levels full of traps and such.

I think it's great fun, but - it's really unfair. The levels are filled with traps there is no way to detect until they kill you... so it boils down to dying, remembering where you died, etc.

  • Yup, it is unfair, but a heck of a lot of fun. A game like that would never be made commercially nowadays.

Matt, you owe it to yourself to at least give it a try through emulation. If you get stuck check out laffer35's "Rick Dangerous Unfair Deaths" video.

  • Definitely one you need to do. Especially Rick Dangerious 2.

  • I didn't have this one myself, but I remember playing it a bit on a friend's console. Looking back, to me this game marks the period in time where console game designed really began to diverge from PC game design. Sure, there was a PC version, but the control scheme is console centric.

    Btw, thanks for the shout-out!

  • I can definitely see that. It is possible to play with a gamepad on PC, of course, but those never became standard. You could easily map the keys to the familiar WASD of FPS, though.

  • It's the only Tomb Raider I've played in my entire life... and it was the PC version, with the keyboard. And yes, it wasn't a great experience. And I did try it again later when someone did release a patch to change her color skin to make her, well...

Anyway, I didn't had the occasion to play one of the other Tomb Raider games, but from my perspective, I had the impression of playing Prince of Persia.

  • Hehe, the infamous "Nude Raider."

  • I dont know why but I never got into this game. Strange... Because it's kind of good.

  • This was a great game for it's time. Looks dated now though. Still, it's where it all started and things just got better. Great review dude!

  • There is a new "anniversary" edition out with updated graphics. I'm very tempted to buy the Wii version.

  • I don't blame you! If it's anything like the initial excitement of playing the original then it's got to be good.

  • Awesome Matt Chat! I really liked the Tomb Raider series and got pretty much every game in the series, even though the franchise started to decline somewhat over time. Where it was inovative at one point it got outdated a couple of years later!

I know what you're saying about those underwater bits, they always freak me out too. I didn't even have an experience like you discribed! That must have been horrifying for sure, yikes.

  • Thanks, HBG! I have most of the later games, though the first one is the only one that really captivated me. It was brilliant!

I may have made the tunnel thing sound worse than it actually was. But it did scare me pretty good! :)

  • It's not my favourite game, but I remember how nice it was to see the difference in graphics between my computer with just Virge and wathing the game at my friend's house with VooDoo :)

One more thing: have you played one of the first 3D titles: Fade to Black? That could be a nice MattChat :)

  • I haven't played Fade to Black, though I have heard about it. I remember looking at some of the early 3D titles such as Alone in the Dark and 3D Monster Maze when we were working on VG. Lots of good stuff, but it is a genre that has improved with time.

  • Another great Matt Chat, I really like your videos brother, great idea and always intresting to watch :)

  • Thanks, Snestastic!

  • Another fantastic video and another one of my fav games of all time. You must just have a list of my top games somewhere that you are working through ha ha! ;o)

Very cool and Im plannin g on playing through all the Tomb Rqaider games at some point. I just need 'Chronicles' to cmplete the PS1 collection of Lara games! Cheers ;o)

  • Yes, I have spies everywhere! :)

    Thanks for commenting.

  • Brilliant vid Matt. Have some fond memories of TR as I was one of the unlucky Saturn kids! Everyone else had gone for the PSX but I had to go for Sega. Wonderful game with so many iconic moments including the T-Rex. My fav one was stepping out into the hhuuggee room with egyptian statues, gazing down what looked like miles and diving off into a pool while a chorus played. Happy times.

  • Ah, the T-Rex. I remember that, too. I almost jumped out of my chair when that thing lumbered in!

Thanks for commenting! I have a Saturn, but lack this game. I did get it running in an emulator, but try as I might, couldn't get the footage. Maybe next time!

  • Great video Matt (some of the most enjoyable to watch on here). I loved this game as a kid, so many memories. I'm giving it a rerun at the moment and it still plays great. The music in the game really added to the atmosphere. :-) ian.

  • Ah, yes, the music is great. Thanks for watching and commenting, ian!

  • Sorry for the double comment.

I was thinking about writing a series of "academic" papers on videogames and one area I would look at is gender representation.

Lara Croft, of course, would be a character I would have to include.

Other notable female characters would be Princess Peach as you mentioned plus Jill Valentine, Aya Brea, Cortana, Carla Valenti, Tifa Lockhart, and Princess Zelda.

  • Ah, I know lots of female avatars from my adventure games, such as April Ryan from TLJ, Kate Walker from Syberia, and Mina from Return to Mysterious Island. All favorites!

  • April and Kate are great characters. I don't think I have played Return to Mysterious Island so I'll have to check that one out!

  • Great video as always. I actually picked up Tomb Raider 2 the other day.

  • I remember all the hype for this game in the early days of the Playstation, this along with Mario 64 really showed the potential of 3d gaming. If you ever get a chance to play the Uncharted series on the PS3, it is like a spiritual successor to Tomb Raider in my opinion.

  • I've heard a bit about the game, but sadly don't have a PS3 yet. Maybe one day!

  • I remember this game when it was released. It was incredibly impressive back then. Funny to think I thought these graphics looked realistic back then.

  • Hehe, to be honest they still look better in parts than some of the modern games I've seen. Right after this, I was playing Metroid Trilogy and noticed a few heavily pixellated shrubs and thought--Tomb Raider!

  • You've taken on a big one this time. You know I was not into this type of game at all but when I got the original TR for PS1 I was amazed! When the T-REX showed up? Forget about it lol! I have enjoyed these games even the ones that had bad reviews. It is funny, in the original half ny fun was locking the butler in the pantry lol! For ME at least this was the game that made me think maybe there is something to this 3D stuff! The sequel was incredible! Great job as always MATT!

  • I had a similar experience. This was one of the first games that made me really want to sell my old Amiga 3000 and get into PC gaming (well, that and Mech Warrior). Of course, the PS1 was what really vaulted the franchise into epic sales.

  • The only thing I can say to that......

Damn you had an Amiga 3000 back then? I'd have killed for that! I always loved Amigas and hated that most people just didn't "get" it.
