I loved this movie so I watched the "Chilren of Dune -2003" but that sucked big time being lightyears from the original movie...they changed everything for the worse using much dry CG animations that also sucked; it was totally aweful lacking all the magic from the first movie...why did they get rid of the dark, space gothic atmo for example? Well, let's forget it!
LOTR was supposed to be unfilmable, but they pulled it off. The question is whether Dune could attract a large enough audience to justify another movie or several movies. Though the miniseries had some stuff going for it: for one thing, there was no stupid "voice power" plotline and I think the emperor was cooler too.
David Lynch's "Dune" differs from the book. That's why many people criticize it but I don't agree. The whole movie was very well done, visual effects were great for that time and the acting was brilliant. Kyle MacLachlan and Francesca Annis were stunning

whilst there is much 'wrong' with the movie - the original of this scene is far superior. In fact, given 'hollywoods' preference for 'puke your guts up dialogue' that leaves nothing unsaid - just in case the audience is as dumb as they believe them to be - we could have expected this version. But shorter is generally better - less said is usually the best way to go. DL would surely endorse this approach, no?
@fugusushi, I think the film does a decent job of explaining the plot, and still the audiences and critics couldn't follow it and they complained. So what do you expect? Some things just don't fit well into a 2-3 hour movie format.

I just don't see how you come to that conclusion, porkandbeans1991. Most people who have read the books see the movie as a bad representation of Dune, but see the two miniseries as being a closer representation to the books. They certainly make more sense to those who haven't read the books, too.

I agree with trappedsoul7. I love Dune, and I think Lynch did the best he could, but it's just an unfilmable story - the plot is too complex. This scene, however, feels real. Ppl get very defensive about the dune book. I read the book and thought it was excellent, but also completely unfilmable. BUT, I also love the trippiness of the film version. This is quite simply the best film to watch stoned EVER. The production design, the performances, and the worm effects still kick ass...
one interesting thing is that the star system named Arrakis really exist, in the constellation Mu Draconi ca 85 lightyears away, checked it on my telescope days before christmas, but its a binary star so if there is a planet there it have two suns
Before they developed Foldspace technology they used some sort of propulsion drive mentioned in the Butlerian Jihad trilogy, but think rational, how else can you explore space and find Arrakis in the first place???? if not having some sort of warp drive
We can only speculate, but there are many possibilities for the colonization of other solar systems, the only problem is time, been a while since I read a Dune book, but was it ever said at what time by our real date measurement system it takes place? I.e. when does it take place in Anno Domini?
It will most certainly be possible to colonize other solar systems with or without FTL travel, only problem is time.
Well, it was quite noticeable that there were synching problems with that scene,it doesn't bother me THAT Much though. Thanks for pointing it out, now I'm sure my Disc and my DVD player are fine. =___=" I was sure it was one of those.
Well done, but i prefer the other version of the navigator's voice over this one. It's a shame the other voice is abbreviated and doesnt include some of the extras that this one does.
Christ, this is much better. I love the film, and the book is my favourite novel, but I appreciate how anyone could get completely confused and frustrated by it.
I've enjoyed DUNE since purchasing the 1984 edition paperback and watching the movie on the big screen. I since have collected all books, the Dune Encyclopedia, and yes, even the collectible toys! GOD HOW I LOVE DUNE!!!
I love this movie! And I love the books. I could care less how inaccurate the movie is. It's an interpretation. And it compliments the books quite well.
The navigators are original humans who are look in the additional dimensions of space + time to see the path trough the hyperspace. The are transformed to do so by massive amounts of spice the are replaced the machines which guides the spaceships trough the hyperspace. hope this will help you a little bit for more facts look at wiki
this is a great film, pretty good depiction of the novel. ionly really liked the first couple of frank herberts books... after that they get a bit.... stupid.
david lynch is good at making bizarre films with complex plots... just look at eraser head.
Without the Guild, the folding of space would be non-existant for it is they alone who have the technology and the power to to make it so. It is they who refine raw spice which is used for many things: fuel, building materials, food, and as a weapon. I encourage you to read Frank Herbert's novels, You will be captivated. That I can promise!
Those first stage navigators wouldn't look out of place in High Street. Dunno about the Third Stage navigator though, he'd turn a few heads at the bus terminal I think.
It's a good lesson for those who like DRUG'S. DON'T mes up with junk, or you'll become a piece of garbage. Just like the navigator is... Those guys working with David Lynch must have inhaled something before designing this REPULSIVE piece of junk. I like the design of navigators in the new Dune series. Someone should post it.
fuckin retard. the navigators are supposed to be repulsive... barely human in fact. why dont you read the book for fuck sake? and this navigator is exactly the way it should be, not those cheap shakespearesque versions in the new dune series - they were a fuckin joke.
Wrong. Very, very wrong. If you know your Dune correctly, you would know that in the first book, the ONLY Navigators seen were 2 toward the end, who accompanied Shaddam when he confronted Muad'dib. The sole concession to their mutation was that after the explosion, one was holding a hand to his eye to vainly attempt to cover where his grey contact lens had slipped, revealing the near-black of a spice addict.
Lynch (regardless of how the book was written) decided to make an appearance of a 3rd Stage Guildsman or Navigator. They are described in ALL the books as being: immersed in a tank full of melange gas; suspended by a Holtzman suspensor field; they have huge heads, elongated bodies, webbed hands and undulating voices - exactly how it appeared in Lynch's film. YOU are thinking of Guild agents NOT actual Guildsman. I think you should have a little re-read of the books...
p. 476, Dune. Ace Special 25th Edition published 1990." "A-h-h," Paul said and nodded to himself. "Guild navigators, both of you, eh?"
"Yes!" "
The same pair are seen earlier on p. 465 with the Emperor. "...the two Guildsmen. They wore the Guild gray, unadorned... the taller of the two, though, held a hand to his left eye... someone jostled the Guildsman's arm, the hand moved, and the eye was revealed. The man had lost one of his masking contact lenses, and the eye stared out of a total blue."
I stand by what I said. The Guild Navigators seen in the original Dune, not Dune Messiah or Children of Dune or whatever, but in the first book, are unassuming, yet identified as Navigators and prescient. Herbert doesn't give them designations as any stage. Their abnormality is their eyes, hence the contacts. They're not floating mutants. That came in later books. NOT in the original.
And I stand by what I said - Lynch decided to make an appearance of a guild navigator as described in the later books, for the obvious reason that they are far more visually stunning. Therefore, the Guild navigator in the film Dune is an accurate representation of the navigators as described in Herbert's later books.
And I agree with your comment - you're right that Lynch included a later-version Navigator. That doesn't invalidate my point that in the original Dune, Navigators were NOT the floating alien mutants, and your blanket statement that navigators are supposed to be repulsive only applies to the later books in the series. Lynch's use of a later Navigator to give away plot points still strikes me as unnecessary, but that's subjective. There are no '3rd Stage' Navigators in the first book is my point.
It probably was necessary - he was simply trying to make the film as captivating as the book and he probably knew there would only be the one film so he decided to show the Navigators at their most repulsive. Im glad he did, despite the fact they are not in the book - and my point still stands; Lynch did a good job of reproducing the Navigators as they are described in the later books.
Navigator:"I am going now... going away.. far from here.. back to ix.. better machines on ix.. better than those on richese.. bye.." *navigator expels vaginal fluid and magiKally folds space*
Mohiam:"Ofcourse!!! Paul Atreides!! THe sisterhood forogt about him... we must have a look at paul atriedes"
It's a little known fact that the actor playing the third stage guild navigator is actually the head of the math department at The University of Michigan. No joke. I've seen him and he's just as hideous in person, although it is true that the camera adds ten pounds.
how many versions of Dune are there? I have the DVD but I remember seeing scenes that aren't in it like when they create the water of life from the small worm.
People judge the film too harshly. It's a bit stagy and the characters may be a little cold and unlikeable, but it's always interesting to watch and the design elements are top notch.
stagy is a plus quite Shakespearean pronounciations pristine womenhood one of a kind atmosphere of doom and menace lends greatly to the flair of gravitas and dignity especially in the female characters that is something rare - almost unique - today otherwise the flick allows itself to delve into realms of insane and unconvincing gorific eXtreems of idio- syncratic Lynchian provinience and obsessssssssivity
ummm... yeah! actually i do get what you`re sayin`. lynch is an unusual fellow with unusual vision.always liked this version of the movie though, with extended footage. the sci-fi channel version was closer to the spirit of the novel, but just not as entertaining. kinda pompus and slow-moving. went to deeply into boring subtleties rather than subtle detail. childeren of dune was slightly better.
I would love to know what if anything survived from the first attempt at making this epic novel into a film. I have seen some HR Geiger sketch and model work but apparently there was filming in Paris? I agree it`s a bit of a botch job...but some bits still send my head spinning and spine tingling !
It's a horrible film, and all the more tragic because Lynch had such great material to work with: Magnificent set design, many first-rate actors, and one of the greatest novels of all time. But he fucked it up. An ironic act of deicide, IMHO.
Dune was a film in the making for over twenty years at that time. It's a VERY hard movie to make. Dune is so expansive and told in such a n elaborate way its a lot easier said than done. Plus its MUCH better than the scifi series of Dune which was stale, monotone and humdrum. At least this one was creative and the design elements were beautiful.
Regardless of production values, the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries was vastly superior in capturing the spirit of the novel. With the budget Lynch squandered, the makers of the new version could have made an epic for all time.
Ugh, no. Complete bollocks, Lynch created a far more involving and expansive universe than the horrible mini-series. All I hear when people say they like the mini-series better is that it had more of the book content in. Of course it had more of the fucking content in, they had 6 hours more to work with and they still made a staid piece of crap, whereas Lynch probably had a max of 4 forcibly cut down into 2 and still transported you 10,000 years to the future
I am a big fan of the books, film and mini series but i have a few problems with the film. Just stupid little things that make the film look stupid, like Feyd's 'shower' scene and the 'scared and ugly' gurney is played by patrick stewart and carries a dog into war...it didnt need to have these things
Of all the ways Lynch's movie is just "off," the Harkonnens are the most unforgivable: he makes them grotesque and cartoonish, absurd and ridiculous, and therefore not the credible Machiavellian villains they should be, especially the Baron. Diminishing them, in turn, diminishes the accomplishment of defeating them.
The one thing I will say in Lynch's favor is that Jose Ferrer was inspired casting: in my mind, he will always be Shaddam IV.
I liked the Harkonnens in the film, I liked the madness stuff, but of course it should have been fused with the cold and calculating stuff. Would have made them very formidable.
Sadly agreed. Lynch's Dune had a gradiose, epic feel.. it's just a shame that it missed the mark and fell into grotesquerie instead of capturing the true spirit of that epic book.
gotta consider, lynch was sort of out of his element on this particular film. the story is quirky, but not in the typical lynch way, he put his own spin on it. also, i dont` think the studio really gave it the treatment it deserved... they wantd to get some competition for star wars out there in a hurry and kinda strained things.
Yes, very much so. Lynch was exactly the wrong director. The asshole studio execs thought "Hey, Lynch is weird, Dune is weird, they must be perfect for each other!" Lynch's style is dreamlike, gloomy, grimy, and grotesque; Dune is hyper-intense, blindingly brilliant, smooth, and sharp as a crysknife. The result of combining them is mush.
You can't be serious. What about that opening monologue, where virginia madsen is like "oh...I forgot to tell you..." Worst monologue ever! Even as a standalone film it's just achingly terrible.
why is that talking Vagina so angry... yes ppl that is what it looks like... and they SHOULD have known that people would think that... who knows maybe they did it on purpose he he.
I enjoyed this edit far more than the one I have on my DVD. This edit has a sensible amount of detail. The original edit would have been confusing for someone who had not read the book.

this movie can change someone's life. it drives you into a territory no one would go. the pain it represents it's real. it's like a horror movie, really.
i can't understand why it was destroyd by critics and the audience. it doesn't help reading the books, the film just stands on its own.
what about the embarassingly low budget tv version produced in the nineties?
this movie was horrible and way off of the book. the harkonnens were portayed terribly. there wasnt all this technology in the book nor was the baron out of his mind. the whole movie seemed like it was in fast forward
But maybe, it was not meant for those who have read the book. I haven't and its baroccue looks, its insanity, it was so glorious. A real spectacle. How can one say that this is not suitable.
The navigator take too much spice and they becomes mutants. I always wanted navigators to look bether, then i saw the new dune movie and that was way bether.
Is it just me or is Richece not the planet of Ix? Or does he mean the House Richece? Both Houses are on the same planet, I think... Minor detail. Cool clip!
House Richese is from the planet Richese. destroyed by the Honored Matres in "Hunters of Dune". Richese was the home planet of Duke Leto's mother. IX was ruled by House Vernius until their conquest by the Bene Tlielax for use in the synthetic spice project amal. minor detail.
I find Shaddam more sympathetic in the movie.

TonyHour 3 years ago
Before they developed Foldspace technology they used some sort of propulsion drive mentioned in the Butlerian Jihad trilogy, but think rational, how else can you explore space and find Arrakis in the first place???? if not having some sort of warp drive
TonyHour 3 years ago
I actually like the original (ie. non-extended) movie's version of this scene better. More taut.
mikeockurts 3 years ago
Well. How did they colonize the universe before the Butlerian Jihad? Since the folding of space only began after the Jihad?
RayDH 3 years ago
We can only speculate, but there are many possibilities for the colonization of other solar systems, the only problem is time, been a while since I read a Dune book, but was it ever said at what time by our real date measurement system it takes place? I.e. when does it take place in Anno Domini?
It will most certainly be possible to colonize other solar systems with or without FTL travel, only problem is time.
Gargantou 3 years ago
"only problem is time. "
Well, time said that it is evenly splitted
Space guild ascended to efficiency in 0-1. Paul's story is located 10 000 years after that.
Space colonization started 9 000 years before Space guild kick started.
So nearly as much time to do colonization without spice as to do with spice melange.
TheCZMan 3 years ago
It was never made clear in the prequels what the propulsion was before melange.
stayjit1 3 years ago
Probably not as "much" colonization before space folding, as after. But colonization nonetheless.

Well done, Book1245!
This is such a great movie, in itself, that I don't care that it doesn't fully match the book 100%.

@Shipgate I have to agree, and the movie was better than the 2000 miniseries in terms of casting for characters etc in my opinion.
Paul and the Duke both look like what I'd imagined from the books in the film, they don't in the miniseries.

Without the Guild, the folding of space would be non-existant for it is they alone who have the technology and the power to to make it so. It is they who refine raw spice which is used for many things: fuel, building materials, food, and as a weapon. I encourage you to read Frank Herbert's novels, You will be captivated. That I can promise!

tropicalian 4 years ago 3
It's a good lesson for those who like DRUG'S. DON'T mes up with junk, or you'll become a piece of garbage. Just like the navigator is... Those guys working with David Lynch must have inhaled something before designing this REPULSIVE piece of junk. I like the design of navigators in the new Dune series. Someone should post it.
mjshikeli 4 years ago
fuckin retard. the navigators are supposed to be repulsive... barely human in fact. why dont you read the book for fuck sake? and this navigator is exactly the way it should be, not those cheap shakespearesque versions in the new dune series - they were a fuckin joke.
chinkychinkychowmein 4 years ago
Aktarin 3 years ago
He and his friend are both identified as Navigators. It is only in the sequel, Dune Messiah, that we meet an orange fish-mutant in a tank.
Get it right.
Aktarin 3 years ago
Lynch (regardless of how the book was written) decided to make an appearance of a 3rd Stage Guildsman or Navigator. They are described in ALL the books as being: immersed in a tank full of melange gas; suspended by a Holtzman suspensor field; they have huge heads, elongated bodies, webbed hands and undulating voices - exactly how it appeared in Lynch's film. YOU are thinking of Guild agents NOT actual Guildsman. I think you should have a little re-read of the books...
chinkychinkychowmein 3 years ago
Aktarin 3 years ago
I stand by what I said. The Guild Navigators seen in the original Dune, not Dune Messiah or Children of Dune or whatever, but in the first book, are unassuming, yet identified as Navigators and prescient. Herbert doesn't give them designations as any stage. Their abnormality is their eyes, hence the contacts. They're not floating mutants. That came in later books. NOT in the original.
Aktarin 3 years ago
And I stand by what I said - Lynch decided to make an appearance of a guild navigator as described in the later books, for the obvious reason that they are far more visually stunning. Therefore, the Guild navigator in the film Dune is an accurate representation of the navigators as described in Herbert's later books.
chinkychinkychowmein 3 years ago
And I agree with your comment - you're right that Lynch included a later-version Navigator. That doesn't invalidate my point that in the original Dune, Navigators were NOT the floating alien mutants, and your blanket statement that navigators are supposed to be repulsive only applies to the later books in the series. Lynch's use of a later Navigator to give away plot points still strikes me as unnecessary, but that's subjective. There are no '3rd Stage' Navigators in the first book is my point.
Aktarin 3 years ago
It probably was necessary - he was simply trying to make the film as captivating as the book and he probably knew there would only be the one film so he decided to show the Navigators at their most repulsive. Im glad he did, despite the fact they are not in the book - and my point still stands; Lynch did a good job of reproducing the Navigators as they are described in the later books.
chinkychinkychowmein 3 years ago 2
Excellent. This is how it should have been done. Thanks for getting rid of the lame new narration by the "Whataburger" guy.

aramanx 4 years ago
Dune from 1984 has two (more or less) versions : the theatrical cut (2h17m) and the alan smithee cut (roughly 3 hours).
in the alan smithee cut, there are extended scenes, but no version has "all" the extended scenes in one.
Bratgoul 4 years ago
The Alan Smithee version also goes into more of the Back Story of the characters, thus making the movie a lot easier to follow
Of course, as Rafaella De Laurentis said, it was already a very complex storyline anyway

ummm... yeah! actually i do get what you`re sayin`. lynch is an unusual fellow with unusual vision.always liked this version of the movie though, with extended footage. the sci-fi channel version was closer to the spirit of the novel, but just not as entertaining. kinda pompus and slow-moving. went to deeply into boring subtleties rather than subtle detail. childeren of dune was slightly better.
randezicke1 4 years ago
I would love to know what if anything survived from the first attempt at making this epic novel into a film. I have seen some HR Geiger sketch and model work but apparently there was filming in Paris? I agree it`s a bit of a botch job...but some bits still send my head spinning and spine tingling !
KidVibrascope 4 years ago
It's a horrible film, and all the more tragic because Lynch had such great material to work with: Magnificent set design, many first-rate actors, and one of the greatest novels of all time. But he fucked it up. An ironic act of deicide, IMHO.
wiseguyz123 4 years ago
Dune was a film in the making for over twenty years at that time. It's a VERY hard movie to make. Dune is so expansive and told in such a n elaborate way its a lot easier said than done. Plus its MUCH better than the scifi series of Dune which was stale, monotone and humdrum. At least this one was creative and the design elements were beautiful.
RET80 4 years ago
Regardless of production values, the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries was vastly superior in capturing the spirit of the novel. With the budget Lynch squandered, the makers of the new version could have made an epic for all time.
wiseguyz123 4 years ago
"With the budget Lynch squandered"
MintySpunkBubble 4 years ago
I am a big fan of the books, film and mini series but i have a few problems with the film. Just stupid little things that make the film look stupid, like Feyd's 'shower' scene and the 'scared and ugly' gurney is played by patrick stewart and carries a dog into war...it didnt need to have these things
shiftyandjoe 4 years ago
Yeah Lynch really messed it up and says that it was his own only true film failure.
igfoiawugeiauw 4 years ago
Of all the ways Lynch's movie is just "off," the Harkonnens are the most unforgivable: he makes them grotesque and cartoonish, absurd and ridiculous, and therefore not the credible Machiavellian villains they should be, especially the Baron. Diminishing them, in turn, diminishes the accomplishment of defeating them.
The one thing I will say in Lynch's favor is that Jose Ferrer was inspired casting: in my mind, he will always be Shaddam IV.
MassCityGent 4 years ago
totally agree with you on Shaddam.
I liked the Harkonnens in the film, I liked the madness stuff, but of course it should have been fused with the cold and calculating stuff. Would have made them very formidable.
rcroton 3 years ago
that`s exactly what i`m sayin`! it`s great as a stand-alone sort of film
randezicke1 4 years ago
Sadly agreed. Lynch's Dune had a gradiose, epic feel.. it's just a shame that it missed the mark and fell into grotesquerie instead of capturing the true spirit of that epic book.
Aktarin 3 years ago
gotta consider, lynch was sort of out of his element on this particular film. the story is quirky, but not in the typical lynch way, he put his own spin on it. also, i dont` think the studio really gave it the treatment it deserved... they wantd to get some competition for star wars out there in a hurry and kinda strained things.
randezicke1 4 years ago
Yes, very much so. Lynch was exactly the wrong director. The asshole studio execs thought "Hey, Lynch is weird, Dune is weird, they must be perfect for each other!" Lynch's style is dreamlike, gloomy, grimy, and grotesque; Dune is hyper-intense, blindingly brilliant, smooth, and sharp as a crysknife. The result of combining them is mush.
wiseguyz123 4 years ago
yeah, i`ll agree to most of that. but i still feel that it was a great stand-alone film!
randezicke1 4 years ago
You can't be serious. What about that opening monologue, where virginia madsen is like "oh...I forgot to tell you..." Worst monologue ever! Even as a standalone film it's just achingly terrible.
