It's easy to get caught up in watching him and think he got some lucky brains to play like this. A guy like Brent Mason spent hours upon hours every single day for years studying and practising to get to this level.
@CamHawesMusic011 Not really!!! Granted he spent time with the guitar but some people are gifted!!! Thats okay!!! It leaves room for people like us!!! aAnd he really really spent time with the guitar!!! He just figured it out quicker than you or I !!! Think about it!!!!!!!! OH yeah!!!!!!
having the right info and 8 hours of practice and playing everyday , thats how you get there. He didnt work at burger King and practice on the weekends, you have to make it your life.
If you wanna know the secret to Brents playing? Pay close attention to how he phrases. Listen to his dymamics with each individual phrase. He speaks. He doesn't play notes. That is why he is so untouchable. It just so happens he has a guitar in his hands.
Brent is the best but that is some seriously great rhythm playing by Randy. Both just bloody awesome players and from all accounts all-around good guys. Does my heart good to watch these two play.
Not only is he playing nice riffs. He has an awesome tone on the axe. Sounds like a blend between a Fender and Gibson. Isn't that how those Valley Arts are supposed to sound? Pretty daggone sweet in my opinon. Coming from a half ass guitarist, it makes my Strat sound like crap. Of course, the fingers have lot to do with it too. I love all kinds of stuff, metal, country, jazz, but Brent is the man. Smooth finger work is the key. Brent is the man.
@joesatriani1200rulez I don't know why, but for some reason, to me it reminds me of Daughters by John Mayer. I know it's probably not meant to be that, but it just reminds me of it.
Brent is great, but its so funny to watch this, cause he's playing so many Danny Gatton riffs, and he even remarks between tunes "Somethin' like that". Thats exactly what Danny would always say after playing a tune like that.
@IamtheActionman I am the exact same way. This guy and Brad Paisley have impressed me a lot. I still need to get Brent's How Wired album but Brad's Play album has Brent and a lot of other great guys on it shreding it country style.
@IamtheActionman: Ever hear the old 1960s "Lovin Spoonful" song "Nashville Cats"? The song is about those guys - million-selling artists - being blown away by the guitar players in Music City. You ain't the first to be blown away by these guys, and you probably won't be the last.
Good god, this man is the KING. I wish that every time I heard someone say they "LIKE EVERYONE BUT COUNTRY" or how much they hate the genre I could shove this video right up their ass. This is as dirty as it gets.
Dude! I saw the Hellecasters in Portland, OR in Jan., '09 at the Alladin Theater... I still feel the same way about "non-Country" assholes who think they're musicians... I recently turned a Segovia-fan friend onto Brent & he about shit. Seriously... it's all about the music, not the "pop" stigmata.
@czzham: Eddie Van Halen once got asked how his show was at NAMM, and he said, "Oh, you mean the Albert Lee show?" I guess he'd had to play next to Albert Lee, and got his eyes opened.
it's an epiphone, which is frankly not a very good amp. He probably uses some vintage Fender blackfaces for his clean sounds at home and in the studio I'd reckon.
I love the old blues players (KIng, Guy, and especially Hendrix), metal (Van Halen, Rhoades) all awesome in their on right, but this guy is in a league of his own. Nice sweet sound on his axe and he can play anything he wants, especially like his country licks. Brent rules!
Curse you, Brent Mason!!! The whole reason I took up guitar recently was because of him, and he's making me look really, REALLY bad! Perhaps I'll just stick to keyboards.
Wow! Brent Mason Is awesome. I just can't get all these chords he's doing. They look hard. Any help? or what scale he is using? I know it's part minor.
What thumb picks does Brent use? I can never seem to find one that fits right. I feel like my hand is too far from from the strings when I use one. Brent's seems to have a shorter pick bit.
I would have to say for a live performance, this is awesome. Many people don't realize how many studio takes even the best have to do endure to get perfection in a recording. I have been playing for over 40 years and would settle for a 1/4 of his talent on one of his bad days. Rock guitar is my favorite over all (Rhoads, Van Halen, etc.); but Brent is the best all around. The man can play anything he wants. His guitar has notes mine don't have (lol). Great jam by both guys!!!!!!!
Brent represent all that I want as a guitarist. He has a good sense of improvisation, a good technique, a clean playing, a great sound and a very good melodic sense.
His ear for melody and when to play less or more is so great to watch (and hear!). There's so much to learn in every single song he plays. A huge vocabulary.
How 'bout some kudos for the rhythm man? Pretty great for a guy who makes his living playing drums and singing! Check out their album, "Smoking Section"!
awesome - what this vid showed me is that iven Brent doesnt play perfect every note (dont get me wrong - he's my favorite guitarist and I love the way he sounds) , but this just showed me that we're all humans and its not too hopless for me - haha :)
Surely took alot of work no matter the level of talent.

Question: Does anyone know what type of amp Mr. Mason is playing through in this video? Awesome!
StickyBunzBand 2 years ago
I think you are looking at one of the early Blues Custom amps that Epiphone ran in 2006,
Either that or, and it is far more likely, he had them create an amp for his use according to his specs.
