"I'm actually 7 times thinner! I look like a pancake!" But if you actually were a pancake, then you would be dead, so it's a good thing that all of this is baloney. Optical illusion. Think about it.
I'm stuck on the 5:09 idea of the back gate being blown backward. Seems reasonable that one can assume, without avoiding most of the relativistic gist of the situation, that the train is largely inelastic, it has only one car, and that either the front or the back wheels can stop it instantaneously. One upshot of a simultaneity shift seems to be the back of the car is at a delayed time - the back gate is supposed to drop down after the front gate although it appears simultaneous when stationary.
At 5:12 both tunnel doors get "smashed out" if the train stops itself in the tunnel. It's difficult to accept that the rear door is smashed "out" in the opposite direction as the train was moving, the back of the train supposedly appears to move backward relative to the tunnel doors. I've seen it described as time-reversal, and that relativity alows for the ordering of events to be reversed as seen by two different frames, whereupon the concept of causality gets tossed out. Skeptical is not bad.
Neither the train nor the tunnel actually shrinks, although they both appear to shrink from the other's frame of reference. This is analogous to a train whistle changing pitch as the train passes, due to the Doppler shift, even though the whistle is capable of emitting one frequency only. Remote measurements can be misleading.
@SuperMagnetizer "appears" is actually a bad word here. It implies that there is one frame where the tunnel has the "correct" length which would be inconsistent with relativity. There is no "correct" length

What a shame that our college students are taught so much of this bullchit...whats really scary is that no one is actively challenging this stupid guys rhetoric...!!!
This guy is saying this is a paradox, which mens it can't be proven, but hence it is proven, etc. He is saying he doesn't quite understand it because it is illogical. There are no understanding paradoxes.
@stonejones1 I think you've misinterpreted the definition of paradox. A paradox is not something that can't be proven - it's something that illustrates a real, yet non intuitive condition.
1) A statement that seems contradictory or absurd but is actually valid or true.
2) an opinion that conflicts with common belief
Multiple paradoxical conditions have been illustrated and often proven to exist as result of Einstein's theories.
@jhhwingnut How do you know he isnt making sense and I'm stupid and not that he is making sense and you're stupid? By the way I dont appreciate you calling me stupid..
@SpiderWick12 This guy skips all over the entiire scientific spectrum.....he talks jibberish on & on & on a different topic or subject every other sentence and finishing NONE.....excuse me.....I make no sense out of the babbling whats so ever !!!
@SpiderWick12 Well....I suppose stupid is a little harsh.....maybe mtdeezy could explain what this guy is trying to say in a way this dummy could understand it....I'd really lik efo rhim to explain if it's crystal clear to him.....I listen to this guy, shaking my head...thinking..."and these idiot Theoretical Physicists rave on about this totally illogical BS & making up these fantasy theorys of theirs ..with one hand out wanting my tax dollars for grants to pay their salaries, for nothin !!!
@jhhwingnut I understand this. You've made your veiws on this topic quite clear to me in the other 'Time Dialation' video. But, as I've already explained... These therories were actually proven to be true in several different experiments. I find them to sound perfectly logical. I don't quite see your reasoning for why, exactly, you would refer to this as "totally illogical BS".
Listen to 1:10-1:25 this is the most important part if his lecture......where he admits he has no idea what he's talking about......no proof, never has been, his answer and proof to the question "why is this true" is, this is the most important thing he says....he says...."why not"...LOL....now there's some proof for you !!!
This Einstein "wanabe" is making no sense at all......you mean to tell me there is no one in that audience that doesn't question this guy's stupid statements...and changing the "train's" scenario every other sentence.....this is an absolute joke...!!!
@jhhwingnut you do realize that time dilation and relativity are integrated into the very satellites that are transmitting the internet your ignorant ass is using to type this.
what is it with you anti-science types? let me guess, you probably think the earth is 7,000 years old?
@scorinaldi To the contrary....types like myself are "more" pro-science types....not anti science like you suggest....we actually deal in logic with actual guidelines uno like physics.....duhhh....this guy is so full of chit I can't believe it......he never even finishes or supports any given statement, he's talking circles....thats why he says he's not going to ask his students to prove this crap......he can't either.....I think he should have taken the train.....anywhere !!!
@scorinaldi Did you even listen to this guy.....did you notice that his only logical explanation for this supposed "paradox" when suggesting that this may not be true.....his only defense is .."why not"......he is a freakin joke....!!!

Hmm, just a thought on the speed limit. It is not possible to travel at or greater than the speed of light from OUR point of view. But is it perhaps possible to travel faster than the speed of light from the view of someone who IS reaching that velocity. As in, from our point of view it would be impossible for a person to make it 300,000,001 meters in one second but from the traveler's point of view he would make it. "Teleporting" in its loosest form. Just an uneducated thought.
Visit at YouTube my slide presentation showing a fundamental critique on the relativity of simultaneity thought experiment paradigm. In Einstein's original train thought experiment the observer Obs2 in the train will NOT be in location M when Obs2 meets each of the light flashes from B and A, but will meet these respectively in different locations C and D ! Look at YouTube for ebrauns789 or use several keywords in a row, e.g. - Relativity of Simultaneity train thought experiment -
Imagine taking 3 photos of the length-contracted train inside the tunnel, one from the tunnel exit, one from the tunnel middle, and one from the tunnel entrance. The 3 photos will show a shrunken train always contracted to your location. This is the way length contraction actually works, per Einstein. Optical shifting is part and parcel of length contraction. It is an optical illusion only.
Hilarious, the more so since the "smartest" people believe all of this. The fact is, that length contraction (together with time dilation and relativistic mass) is an egregiously misunderstood case of optical shifting caused by the apparent constancy of the speed of light, which is in fact not constant. The theory works about as well as the old Earth-centered model with its cycles and epicycles.
Topics such as this require an immense imagination. If you're going to go against something such as time dilation, I expect an equal amount of mathematical equations and explanations to counteract the existing ones that make it possible to test and prove time dilation, as done in the methods that theinquisitor has stated above.
@xXSparky117Xx Station an observer at the tunnel exit. Just as the engine reaches the exit observer, freeze the shrunken image of the train (100m at Lorentz contraction factor 7, v = .99c) and then shift your observer's location. "Walk" him from the tunnel exit to the tunnel entrance. When you do this, you will see that the optical image of the shrunken train follows the observer, revealing the physics of optical distortion.
Considering you wouldn't be able to freeze the image and physically walk from one side to the other, this scenario would be impossible. The engine has to maintain it's near light speed to contract its length.
Energy sources without the need for fuel or energy input exist ,But the Oil coporations life depends on covering this up,Check this free energy magnet motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,The revolution begins!
The problem with this is the reference point. We can have two individuals that are not each travelling faster than light, but from the perspective of one individual, it can seem like the other individual is travelling faster than the speed of light. There is a certain fraction, sort of like if one hour for me is 500000000 hours for you, using my world as the reference point, then you would appear to be travelling faster than the speed of light, given you live for 500000000 hours and were moving.
@RevengeOfTheAbyss Basically, different "time zones" or time dimensions. Technically, each individual can live in thier own time zone, if any other individuals exist in a zone that is significantly different, or appearing faster than the eye can see (light speed) then they will not be visible. Time has a cyclical component, so that is why we can live in different time-zones, but physical reality appears stable and congruent like a figure 8 pattern. Its somehow linked to planetary movement/orbit.
@RevengeOfTheAbyss In terms of quantum physics and consciousness, there is an article "Subjective Perception of Time and a Progressive Moment - The Neurobiological Key to Unlocking Consciousness" - that supports the explanation that there is a kind of time cycle that occurs in the mind, after it occurs, we have a memory that fills in the gap and presents it to us in a stepped manner, this being a kind of "time frequency" - different brains at different frequencies can exist in other realities.
@RevengeOfTheAbyss Peter Lynds himself has admitted (or more properly...been forced to admit) that his "theories" are not scientific, they can´t be proved experimentally, they are as valid as saying that Santa Claus does exist, but prefers not to show up. The book doesn't have any mathematical backup and "defends it by claiming he thinks it can be explained some other way". (he is still making money and getting fans from the book though)
@RevengeOfTheAbyss those same ideas he wrote (even though he claims he did it in one night in some sort of brilliant rush of intellectual energy), have been proposed many times in the past. They are not taken in consideration scientifically because the model is not consistent with reality itself.
Relativity can easily be described in a non scientific sense. Have you ever sat in a room and felt like it was an hour, and really it was only 5 mins? Or vise-versa? Relativity exist, everything is relative to something. Example time is relative of the time it takes the sun rays to get from the sun to here, and the orbit around the sun. Your time is also relative to where u are in the world based on the prime meridian aka Zulu time.
Eimstein is the most famous fraudulent scientist in the history of science. Relativity theory is completely false. But it defends the law of energy conservation against the truth, so the fuel/energy complex promoted relativity theory to the rank of the most famous physical theory. (They are afraid of the perpetual motion machine of the first kind - properly so, it is possible). If you want to see a proof that relativity theory is false, send me an e-mail - my e-mail address is in my contact box.
i admire einstein because of his humanitarism ideals not his scientific views personaly. newton also believed in alot of silly ideas that are considered nonsense like astrology and sun worship.
constant forward motion through time also destroys the idea of repitition as each time you "repeat" something is unique hence things dont actualy repeate as your watch constantly is different as it moves forward each time you repeat something. end of rant.
einsteins mistake was trying to integrate watch time with speed and not recognizing that travel speed (time taken to travel), not time itself is whats generaly affected unless your traveling to a different time zone.the beauty of high speed travel is the faster you travel, the less time it takes to get thier.
time isnt like a vcr with pause buttons, fast forward or slow motion buttons, its steady and constant, constantly moving and changing showing motion is a constant as all objects age and decay, if true time stop was possible or rest, they wouldnt age and they do.
the other thing that changes wich isnt a form of time travel is time zone travel and thats just because different time states exist in different areas because of location. more junk science.all objects deteriorate and age period. also if rest were an actuality a watch would stop moving at a state of rest. forward motion of time and constant steady movement of time are a constant. never base an idea on a false assumption, its bad science.
@alanfunkle You're talking about speeds like on an airplane or something. At close to the speed of light, time, not the "time it takes to travel" slows down. Time from space-time, not your idea of time and how you wake up and go to sleep. The speed of light remains constant and everything else adjusts, space and time, so that all observers can agree on the same speed of light.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
time does not stop, speed up or slow down. the only thing that changes during high speed travel is the time it takes to get somewhere.i have alot of respects for einsteins humanitarism views but this appears to be more junk science. if objects rested or time stopped, objects wouldnt age or deteriorate over time.watch time is a constant. forward motion through time also prohibits time travel. more evidence of intellectuals embracing if you cant dazzle them with brilliance..baffle them with bs
@alanfunkle, uh huh junk science. Except that the global positioning system integrates relativistic time dilation into it's calculations. If it didn't, errors would accumulate until it gives you positioning data that is wrong by miles. The GPS satellites clocks run at a different rate than the ones on the ground, because of relativity. It's been tested with atomic clocks in jet planes and radioactive decay rates of particles accelerated in particle accelerators. It's real.
begin to manifest into the past? More or less, moving at exactly the speed of light causes time to freeze for whoever is moving with it. So, doubling the speed of light would be a complete reversal of time... I'm open for debate on this. Maybe I am misunderstanding something (or more, lol). Please explain where I am wrong, so I can better understand then. Thanks.
@RiftZM In theory time would stop and then reverse, although you cannot reach the speed of light exactly because of the numbers. Time, precisely, cannot run back, we cannot double the speed of light and travel into the past. But if we could go at 99% the speed of light on a rocket, we would find that time on the spaceship runs slower while on the journey than time on Earth, and the clocks and people aboard would have "aged" slower. And that would be "tangible" evidence, not visual.
@robertogj Yeah, I know. Supposedly, the closer and closer you get to the speed of light the more and more energy you need to move, apparently an infinite amount, which is why we'll never reach the speed of light. But, I was saying in theory. If we could travel at the speed of light or beyond, light would be distorted because we see things based on how fast light hits our eyes. If we're moving faster than light, it will never reach us until we stop or slow down enough.
reach our eyes. Light is supposed to be a cosmic speed limit. Anything moving at or close to the speed of light only appears to warp, when in fact it hasn't actually changed. If you measured yourself while traveling at the speed of light, you will still measure the same. Nothing changes. In theory, if what Einstein is saying is true, that anything traveling at the speed of light ceases to exist? Moving faster than light can roll back time? So you cease to exist at that moment in time, but
@RiftZM --I meant to say moving FASTER than the speed of light would cause you to cease to exist at that moment in time; or, to an observer, you'd Vanish (think star trek and warp speed).-- Also, moving at the speed of light, things behind us appear to stop since light is reaching our eyes at the exact speed we are moving. This same thing happens on even horizons of black holes. To observers, we suddenly freeze and not move, although we are already gone.
@RiftZM --I meant to say moving FASTER than the speed of light would cause you to cease to exist at that moment in time; or, to an observer, you'd Vanish (think star trek and warp speed).-- One other thing, when moving at the speed of light, everything would appear to stop moving behind you, because you are moving at the speed light is reaching your eyes, same thing happens on even horizons of blackholes. Observers would see you freeze, when in fact you are already gone.
The problem here is that people refuse to accept that these affects are just visual only. It's very simple, in fact... We see things based on the speed of light, so if something we're seeing is traveling the speed of light, the closer to the speed of light we are moving, the object appears more and more warped until we are traveling at the speed of light, in which everything is extremely distorted. If we traveled faster than light, we'd see nothing, because we are moving too fast for light to
One can look at a mirror which make them look wide, and a door narrow therefore appearing as if they would be unable to walk through the door, but matter and space has not changed only the perception of light.....
this really confuses me, this really isnt much of a paradox to me, yes the image of the train not fitting in the tunnel from each frame of reference may be distorted due to high rate of speed but, that is only the light image which is reflected off the train, the reality is the train and the tunnel are matter and space, light is a completely different entity itself, the distortion is to the light images of these object not the actual object. so if the train fits it fits
@Perezr919, but it's not merely a light effect. It's a real distortion of space and time. He explains more fully in the complete lecture. To interpret is as a mere illusion of light is to miss the point of relativity. Time and space really do change at high velocity and gravity.
@Perezr919, I was going to answer but then you removed your comment for some reason. Well anyway, it's not really a paradox when you accept that events that are simultaneous in one reference frame aren't necessarily simultaneous in another reference frame. That underlying assumption is the source of the apparent paradox. There are of course no true paradoxes in reality. Reality is self-consistent.
@Plpoo, obviously if I was I wouldn't know it. Would you? But that's not an argument. For relativity to be false, there would have to be an international conspiracy of scientists that's lasted nearly a century. Not to mention the engineers involved in the design of GPS satellites. They would all have to be in on the conspiracy to trick us into believing in time dilation. And for what purpose? Does this seem at all likely? Is anyone ever going to respond when I point this out or just slink away?
@theinquisitor i would probably realise it earllier than you.
No its not a conspiracy, scientists realy believe this. They were brainwashed into believing and teaching this "knowledge". The pupil will became the teacher and so on so on. Now imagine somebody made a general mistake somewhere back and then everything that comes after is based on this mistake, then everything is false but everybody would believe its right.
Whats about your GPS Satelittes? What do they prove?
@Plpoo, relativity isn't just believed, it's used. In cosmology, particle physics, directing space probes and GPS. GPS satellites are moving at speed relative to the ground, and are further outside Earth's gravity. So their clocks run at a different rate due to time dilation. Precise timing calculations are required for calculating positioning data. The satellites are designed to take relativity into account and would create huge cumulative errors if it wasn't real. Don't believe me, look it up.
@theinquisitor I checked out Plpoo's page. He made a tribute to bush on his page. Suddenly I'm not surprised that he lacks any understanding of relativity....he probably cant begin to even understand it.
@Plpoo There have been literally hundreds of major experiments that have proven the time dilation effect unequivocally. Anyone can confirm the time dilation effect for themselves with an accurate enough clock. If your intention is to prove Einstein wrong, you will have to do better than calling everyone brainwashed and rambling nonsense about a subject you clearly no nothing about.
@Plpoo In my opinion Time Dialtion is only an illusion, he would have only aged shorter in comparison to our observation of the time in motion. When he would slow down and come back to our "normal" speed he wouldn't have aged any differently.
I just started this unit in physics not long ago, if anyone has some helpful knowledge it would be gratefully appreciated.
@NoPunNeeded The Twins Paradox shows clearly that there is nothing illusory about it. This effect has been verified time and again. A clock that accelerates away from another clock and later returns will be found to have accumulated less time than its stationary counterpart. There are no privileged reference frames, but acceleration breaks the symmetry of special relativity.
So Einstein's theory of relativity was essential to explain to people why you shouldnt try to seal a train in a tunnel? I knew it was a bad idea before I watched this video...
@99thmonkee omg are you serious? The first time i watched this lecture i understood exactly what her was saying, infact this is the only explination i've ever heard that explans how both situations are different but resolve to be the same in the end. Now if i could only find one on time dialtion paradox.
@99thmonkee, what about the fact that time dilation has been observed empirically by synchronising atomic clocks and placing one on a supersonic jet and leaving the other behind, and their time differences being exactly what relativity predicts? How about the fact that GPS satellites have to take time dilation into account? If they didn't, then errors in their calculations would accumulate until they were off by miles. It has been empirically demonstrated. What does Occams razor say about that?
Neither the train or tunnel have stretched or shrunk. The only thing that has changed is your perception of time vrs reality's perception of you this causes a bend or warp in space time.
@dwilmer7 haha no. einstein found this theory, this man is just repeating what he read and was taught himself. no offense to him, but i highly doubt that he couldve discovered this on his own.
so how does all of our speed factor in to this, clustar going outward, galaxie movment within cluster, Solar system rotating in the Milkyway, orbit of earth round sun, spin of earth, is all that speed cumlative towards speed of light or at times work agains each ohter, like when earth spins at opposite direction of orbit around sun???anyone???
Little bit off topic; With all due respect for this professor and Albert Einstein, (the professor actually looks a little bit like Einstein..) He was wrong about our speed limits. I'm a big fan of Einstein and I have studied basically all of his work. The part that really annoys me is that he rejected the quantum theory. He was too attached to the classic physics and classic mechanism. Thus, he thought in a classical matter. Though he revolutionized with his ground-breaking ideas.....
... he wouldn't accept the quantum theory, or any other new type of physics that came along after his prime.. He wouldn't accept some theories that his colleague had so he drove himself insane trying to explain how everything worked by one equation, the theory of everything.. Now, many came to the conclusion that he was actually wrong about many things but I still admire him. His theories were before his time, at least many of them were.. To the point now; He said it was impossible to create..
.. an energy device based on his own equation, E=MC^2.. But we know now that it is possible as we know about the atomic bomb etc.. He said it was IMPOSSIBLE to travel at the speed of light, or even faster than that, which is explained here and in other videos.. It IS impossible IF we constitute it on these equations, meaning, thinking in the "classical" manner. If we base our argument based on what we know now, then it is truley impossible, but that does not mean that it can't be done.. for now
I just didn't like that he established a universal speed-limit when, again, with all due respect, there were/is so much that he didn't know about, and we as humans don't have a clue about. He was a great theoretical physicist no doubt, but he wasn't the only one. And there will be many of them for times to come whom will discover more amazing things that Einstein couldn't even imagine..
its impossible...but we can find a trick to it...instead of trying to move faster to a place to get to a place faster...will probably in the future find a short cut.
@vincentw92 Exactly what I mean. We can call it "impossible" if we go about it like we always have. By that I mean the physical principal of traveling from point A to point B in a classical manner. However if we find a way in the future of "traveling" or what we would call it then, that would seem to be much faster than the speed of light in comparising, then it would not at all be "impossible" like we have always thought. Thus, stating the impossibility of such thing is erroneous.
@monej I really don't know much about physics, but I thought if you accelerate a proton in a particle accelerator, the closer it gets to the speed of light, the bigger and heavier it gets. Also, as its speed gets closer to 'c', the percentage of energy that accelerates the proton gets smaller, until all the energy you throw at the proton goes into making the proton larger, not faster. Wouldn't that prove that einstein was right, and matter can't go the speed of light? It just gets bigger?
@monej no we cant go as fast as the speed of light we can only theoretically get close but even in theory we cant match it. even in warp tech from star trek we wear not "truelly" going faster then the speed of light. we wear bending space and bairly moving our selves.
if there r 2 persons and 1st person moves close to speed of light and returns then 2nd person would have aged move than 1st pesoon . if the same case is observed from 1st persons perspective v will see that 2nd person is moving and returning (relatively) so the outcome should be that 1st person is aged more than 2nd person .
.
both outcomes r contradicting so which 1 is correct and y ??
There is no need, VICTORGIRAFFE, to disrespect the professor. He is simply teaching what he was taught. By the way, who gave me all the thumbs down? Was it you? I only give thumbs down to people who post foul language, as you have done. Now, I will give you a thumbs down.
Once the thumbs come out, the time for diplomacy is over.
By the way, why is so-called "foul" language considered so? I find the aversion to profanity to be irrational and superstitious. As if the words are imbued with evil like some incantation. Sillyness.
From tunnel entrance, engine is at tunnel entrance & caboose is1 mile outside. From tunnel exit engine is 1 mile from exit & caboose is 2 miles from exit (entire train is inside tunnel). From engine, train is entering tunnel. From caboose, entrance is 1 mi ahead, exit is 2 mi ahead, and engine is 5 miles beyond exit. Bonus points: From mid-tunnel, engine is 0.5 mi inside tunnel & caboose is 0.5 mi outside tunnel. From mid-train, engine is 0.5 mile inside tunnel & tunnel exit is 0.5 mile beyond.
Yikes, I made a mistake. From mid-train, the 3.5 miles to the tunnel entrance is shortened to 3.5 / 7 = 0.5 mi. The exit is 10.5 / 7 = 1.5 mi away, meaning the engine is 2 mi beyond the exit and 3 mi beyond the entrance, apparently. So, 2 miles of the train stick out the far end, 1 mile of the train are "inside" the tunnel, and the remaining 4 miles of the train haven't entered the tunnel yet.
From mid-tunnel, to correct my original answer, the engine will appear to be 0.5 mi away, or 3 miles inside tunnel. The caboose will appear to be (7 + 3.5) / 7 = 1.5 mi away, or 2 miles inside the tunnel. Entire train appears inside tunnel, but at a differerent location than the tunnel exit observer measures.
At the instant a 7-mile train enters a 7-mile tunnel (T = 0 in both frames), at velocity v = 0.989743318611c, what do observers stationed at each end of the tunnel and at each end of the train observe? Relativity factor R = [1 - v^2/c^2]^-1/2 = 7. Two frames, four viewpoints. Bonus points: what do two more observers stationed at mid-tunnel and at mid-train observe? Please click on Reply to answer. Good luck!
Thank you for posting this video clip. But I was under the impression this was a free forum for the healthy exchange of ideas. If my posting offends you, you are free to give me a thumbs down. If you are interested in the physics, I would be glad to explain it to you as I see it.
At an apparent velocity of 0.99c, the tunnel will be shrunken toward the train by a factor of 7.1. This means it will appear to be 7.1 times closer and 7.1 times shorter than normal. Same goes for the train, as viewed from the tunnel. Because of these optical shifts, the velocities are also slowed by gamma = 7.1. Therefore, proper velocity of train under these conditions is 7.0c. Now everybody be a good medieval monk and give me a thumbs down.
@SuperMagnetizer You are only thinking one-dimensionally. This would be observed if we could see in the dark. It's not an optical illusion, it's the physics of moving objects relative to the observer. Look up time dilation, and watch as much of the explanations as you can to get an idea of how it works.
We don't have time dilation. It's all an optical illusion. A two-mile train approaching at 0.866c will appear to be foreshortened by a factor of 2. It will look like it's one mile long, because each end of it will be optically shifted toward the observer by the same factor of 2. The tunnel will appear likewise from the viewpoint of observers on the train. It's all an optical illusion. The only Proper observations are those made by observers in each frame of each other as they pass.
@SuperMagnetizer How do you figure there is no time dilation? Both time and length changes relative to the speed of the train. The observer on the train doesn't see the train as shorter, but the stationary tunnel as shorter than the train. The outside observer sees the train as shorter than the tunnel.
If the train was stopped, both the train and the tunnel seem to be the same size. it's a frame of reference, not an optical illusion. Length and time are relative to the observer.
At 0.9900c, from the tunnel, a 7-mile-long train whose engine is 7 miles away and caboose 14 miles away will appear to be 7.089 times shorter. The reason is because its engine will appear to be at 0.98745 miles and its caboose will appear to be at 1.9749 miles. The train appears to be 0.9875 miles long. This is not because the train has suffered any actual shrinkage, but because each end of the train is optically shifted toward the observer. The surrounding scenery is not shifted.
@SuperMagnetizer The effect is not just optical, it would be a real thing. Only to the outside observer however. Space-time around the train would cause the shrinkage, but only to the observer outside the train. To me you're saying it's because the information we see by reflected light causes us to see it that way and nothing is really happening.
In order for light to be the same for every observer, space and time must change.
The speed of light is not constant, even if it is measured to be. Just as we see the sun rise and set, it doesn't. We spin. Just as we see the Moon tracking daily from east to west, it doesn't. It actually orbits from west to east monthly. We have to be cleverer than our measurements, knowing they can mislead us. And we must not allow the math to rule the physics. At optical distance 1 mile when gamma equals 7, lightspeed is 7c but appears to be c. Train speed is just under 7c but appears 0.99c.
@SuperMagnetizer The speed of light would be the same for you if you were going 1/2 the speed of light as it would be if you were going 99% the speed of light. What would change is your length and time. You'd never notice this change, since you'd be squashed similarly and your body rhythms would slow as well. Only the outside observer would notice that effect.
If a large clock is mounted on the train, it will read the time at which the train is actually at 7 miles. At 0.9900c, the train will take a certain measured time to reach the tunnel. At this instant, the engine's apparent and actual positions will coincide, but the caboose will still be optically shifted by relativity factor 7.089 toward the observer. What seemed to be a 0.9875-mile train covering 1 mile in that time is actually a 7-mile train covering 7 miles in that absolute time.
This is true there are things about time we don't understand but we know time is a measurement and a variable because we have time dilation. I believe a greater understanding of time will explain the paradoxes of the Measurement Problem and Heisenbergs Uncertainty Principle.
Yes you are right the Hidden Variable is the supposed causes of apparently random quantum events. But no one knows what the hidden variable is or if it even exists. Such a variable would have to affect all the matter of the Universe and the variable of time dilation has done just that. Sometimes I feel time is seen as Philosophy because we do not understand it.

CACBCCCU 6 months ago
At 5:12 both tunnel doors get "smashed out" if the train stops itself in the tunnel. It's difficult to accept that the rear door is smashed "out" in the opposite direction as the train was moving, the back of the train supposedly appears to move backward relative to the tunnel doors. I've seen it described as time-reversal, and that relativity alows for the ordering of events to be reversed as seen by two different frames, whereupon the concept of causality gets tossed out. Skeptical is not bad.
CACBCCCU 6 months ago
Neither the train nor the tunnel actually shrinks, although they both appear to shrink from the other's frame of reference. This is analogous to a train whistle changing pitch as the train passes, due to the Doppler shift, even though the whistle is capable of emitting one frequency only. Remote measurements can be misleading.
SuperMagnetizer 7 months ago
@SuperMagnetizer "appears" is actually a bad word here. It implies that there is one frame where the tunnel has the "correct" length which would be inconsistent with relativity. There is no "correct" length

SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
@SuperMagnetizer
Topics such as this require an immense imagination. If you're going to go against something such as time dilation, I expect an equal amount of mathematical equations and explanations to counteract the existing ones that make it possible to test and prove time dilation, as done in the methods that theinquisitor has stated above.
xXSparky117Xx 1 year ago
@xXSparky117Xx Station an observer at the tunnel exit. Just as the engine reaches the exit observer, freeze the shrunken image of the train (100m at Lorentz contraction factor 7, v = .99c) and then shift your observer's location. "Walk" him from the tunnel exit to the tunnel entrance. When you do this, you will see that the optical image of the shrunken train follows the observer, revealing the physics of optical distortion.
SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
@SuperMagnetizer
Considering you wouldn't be able to freeze the image and physically walk from one side to the other, this scenario would be impossible. The engine has to maintain it's near light speed to contract its length.

RevengeOfTheAbyss 1 year ago
@RevengeOfTheAbyss Basically, different "time zones" or time dimensions. Technically, each individual can live in thier own time zone, if any other individuals exist in a zone that is significantly different, or appearing faster than the eye can see (light speed) then they will not be visible. Time has a cyclical component, so that is why we can live in different time-zones, but physical reality appears stable and congruent like a figure 8 pattern. Its somehow linked to planetary movement/orbit.
RevengeOfTheAbyss 1 year ago
@RevengeOfTheAbyss In terms of quantum physics and consciousness, there is an article "Subjective Perception of Time and a Progressive Moment - The Neurobiological Key to Unlocking Consciousness" - that supports the explanation that there is a kind of time cycle that occurs in the mind, after it occurs, we have a memory that fills in the gap and presents it to us in a stepped manner, this being a kind of "time frequency" - different brains at different frequencies can exist in other realities.
RevengeOfTheAbyss 1 year ago
@RevengeOfTheAbyss Peter Lynds himself has admitted (or more properly...been forced to admit) that his "theories" are not scientific, they can´t be proved experimentally, they are as valid as saying that Santa Claus does exist, but prefers not to show up. Your time is also relative to where u are in the world based on the prime meridian aka Zulu time.

constant forward motion through time also destroys the idea of repitition as each time you "repeat" something is unique hence things dont actualy repeate as your watch constantly is different as it moves forward each time you repeat something. end of rant.
alanfunkle 1 year ago
einsteins mistake was trying to integrate watch time with speed and not recognizing that travel speed (time taken to travel), not time itself is whats generaly affected unless your traveling to a different time zone.the beauty of high speed travel is the faster you travel, the less time it takes to get thier.
alanfunkle 1 year ago
time isnt like a vcr with pause buttons, fast forward or slow motion buttons, its steady and constant, constantly moving and changing showing motion is a constant as all objects age and decay, if true time stop was possible or rest, they wouldnt age and they do.
alanfunkle 1 year ago
the other thing that changes wich isnt a form of time travel is time zone travel and thats just because different time states exist in different areas because of location. more junk science.all objects deteriorate and age period. also if rest were an actuality a watch would stop moving at a state of rest. forward motion of time and constant steady movement of time are a constant. never base an idea on a false assumption, its bad science.
alanfunkle 1 year ago
@alanfunkle You're talking about speeds like on an airplane or something. At close to the speed of light, time, not the "time it takes to travel" slows down. Time from space-time, not your idea of time and how you wake up and go to sleep. The speed of light remains constant and everything else adjusts, space and time, so that all observers can agree on the same speed of light.
robertogj 1 year ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
time does not stop, speed up or slow down. the only thing that changes during high speed travel is the time it takes to get somewhere.i have alot of respects for einsteins humanitarism views but this appears to be more junk science. if objects rested or time stopped, objects wouldnt age or deteriorate over time.watch time is a constant. forward motion through time also prohibits time travel. more evidence of intellectuals embracing if you cant dazzle them with brilliance..baffle them with bs
alanfunkle 1 year ago

Thanks.
RiftZM 1 year ago
@RiftZM In theory time would stop and then reverse, although you cannot reach the speed of light exactly because of the numbers. Time, precisely, cannot run back, we cannot double the speed of light and travel into the past. But if we could go at 99% the speed of light on a rocket, we would find that time on the spaceship runs slower while on the journey than time on Earth, and the clocks and people aboard would have "aged" slower. And that would be "tangible" evidence, not visual.
robertogj 1 year ago
@robertogj Yeah, I know. Supposedly, the closer and closer you get to the speed of light the more and more energy you need to move, apparently an infinite amount, which is why we'll never reach the speed of light. But, I was saying in theory. If we could travel at the speed of light or beyond, light would be distorted because we see things based on how fast light hits our eyes. If we're moving faster than light, it will never reach us until we stop or slow down enough.
RiftZM 1 year ago
reach our eyes.

@Perezr919 that is completely different. you are talking about angles he is talking about speeds that are close to the sonic boom of light waves.
theendofit 1 year ago
this really confuses me, this really isnt much of a paradox to me, yes the image of the train not fitting in the tunnel from each frame of reference may be distorted due to high rate of speed but, that is only the light image which is reflected off the train, the reality is the train and the tunnel are matter and space, light is a completely different entity itself, the distortion is to the light images of these object not the actual object. so if the train fits it fits
Perezr919 1 year ago
@Perezr919, but it's not merely a light effect. It's a real distortion of space and time. He explains more fully in the complete lecture. To interpret is as a mere illusion of light is to miss the point of relativity. Time and space really do change at high velocity and gravity.

@Perezr919, I was going to answer but then you removed your comment for some reason. That underlying assumption is the source of the apparent paradox. There are of course no true paradoxes in reality. Reality is self-consistent.

Did u have ever taken in consideration taht you are possibly brainwashed?
Plpoo 1 year ago
@Plpoo, obviously if I was I wouldn't know it. Would you? But that's not an argument. For relativity to be false, there would have to be an international conspiracy of scientists that's lasted nearly a century. Not to mention the engineers involved in the design of GPS satellites. They would all have to be in on the conspiracy to trick us into believing in time dilation. And for what purpose? Does this seem at all likely? Is anyone ever going to respond when I point this out or just slink away?
theinquisitor 1 year ago
@theinquisitor i would probably realise it earllier than you.
No its not a conspiracy, scientists realy believe this. They were brainwashed into believing and teaching this "knowledge". The pupil will became the teacher and so on so on. Now imagine somebody made a general mistake somewhere back and then everything that comes after is based on this mistake, then everything is false but everybody would believe its right.
Whats about your GPS Satelittes? What do they prove?
Plpoo 1 year ago
@Plpoo, relativity isn't just believed, it's used. In cosmology, particle physics, directing space probes and GPS. GPS satellites are moving at speed relative to the ground, and are further outside Earth's gravity. So their clocks run at a different rate due to time dilation. Precise timing calculations are required for calculating positioning data. The satellites are designed to take relativity into account and would create huge cumulative errors if it wasn't real. Don't believe me, look it up.
theinquisitor 1 year ago 9
@theinquisitor I checked out Plpoo's page. He made a tribute to bush on his page. Suddenly I'm not surprised that he lacks any understanding of relativity....he probably cant begin to even understand it.
Narethkon 1 year ago
@Plpoo There have been literally hundreds of major experiments that have proven the time dilation effect unequivocally. Anyone can confirm the time dilation effect for themselves with an accurate enough clock. If your intention is to prove Einstein wrong, you will have to do better than calling everyone brainwashed and rambling nonsense about a subject you clearly no nothing about.
lemonrind 1 year ago
@Plpoo In my opinion Time Dialtion is only an illusion, he would have only aged shorter in comparison to our observation of the time in motion. When he would slow down and come back to our "normal" speed he wouldn't have aged any differently.
I just started this unit in physics not long ago, if anyone has some helpful knowledge it would be gratefully appreciated.
NoPunNeeded 1 year ago
@NoPunNeeded The Twins Paradox shows clearly that there is nothing illusory about it. This effect has been verified time and again. A clock that accelerates away from another clock and later returns will be found to have accumulated less time than its stationary counterpart. There are no privileged reference frames, but acceleration breaks the symmetry of special relativity.

Though he revolutionized with his ground-breaking ideas.....
monej 1 year ago 6
... he wouldn't accept the quantum theory, or any other new type of physics that came along after his prime.. He wouldn't accept some theories that his colleague had so he drove himself insane trying to explain how everything worked by one equation, the theory of everything.. Now, many came to the conclusion that he was actually wrong about many things but I still admire him. His theories were before his time, at least many of them were.. To the point now; He said it was impossible to create..
monej 1 year ago 6
.. an energy device based on his own equation, E=MC^2.. If we base our argument based on what we know now, then it is truley impossible, but that does not mean that it can't be done.. for now
monej 1 year ago 8
I just didn't like that he established a universal speed-limit when, again, with all due respect, there were/is so much that he didn't know about, and we as humans don't have a clue about. He was a great theoretical physicist no doubt, but he wasn't the only one. And there will be many of them for times to come whom will discover more amazing things that Einstein couldn't even imagine..
monej 1 year ago 5
its impossible...but we can find a trick to it...instead of trying to move faster to a place to get to a place faster...will probably in the future find a short cut.
vincentw92 1 year ago

It just gets bigger?
morningstomper123 1 year ago
@monej no we cant go as fast as the speed of light we can only theoretically get close but even in theory we cant match it. even in warp tech from star trek we wear not "truelly" going faster then the speed of light. we wear bending space and bairly moving our selves.

if there r 2 persons and 1st person moves close to speed of light and returns then 2nd person would have aged move than 1st pesoon . if the same case is observed from 1st persons perspective v will see that 2nd person is moving and returning (relatively) so the outcome should be that 1st person is aged more than 2nd person .
.
both outcomes r contradicting so which 1 is correct and y ??
please respond ?

There is no need, VICTORGIRAFFE, to disrespect the professor. He is simply teaching what he was taught. By the way, who gave me all the thumbs down? Was it you? I only give thumbs down to people who post foul language, as you have done. Now, I will give you a thumbs down.

One two three four, I declare a thumb war.

What we need here is clever diplomacy to avoid unnecessary casualties.
SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago

SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
Yikes, I made a mistake. From mid-train, the 3.5 miles to the tunnel entrance is shortened to 3.5 / 7 = 0.5 mi. The exit is 10.5 / 7 = 1.5 mi away, meaning the engine is 2 mi beyond the exit and 3 mi beyond the entrance, apparently. So, 2 miles of the train stick out the far end, 1 mile of the train are "inside" the tunnel, and the remaining 4 miles of the train haven't entered the tunnel yet.
SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
From mid-tunnel, to correct my original answer, the engine will appear to be 0.5 mi away, or 3 miles inside tunnel. The caboose will appear to be (7 + 3.5) / 7 = 1.5 mi away, or 2 miles inside the tunnel. Entire train appears inside tunnel, but at a differerent location than the tunnel exit observer measures.
SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
At the instant a 7-mile train enters a 7-mile tunnel (T = 0 in both frames), at velocity v = 0.989743318611c, what do observers stationed at each end of the tunnel and at each end of the train observe? Relativity factor R = [1 - v^2/c^2]^-1/2 = 7. Two frames, four viewpoints. Bonus points: what do two more observers stationed at mid-tunnel and at mid-train observe? Please click on Reply to answer. Good luck!

When did this thread become a physics exam?

Thank you for posting this video clip. But I was under the impression this was a free forum for the healthy exchange of ideas. If my posting offends you, you are free to give me a thumbs down. If you are interested in the physics, I would be glad to explain it to you as I see it.

My comment was meant in jest, since I found it amusing that you were asking questions as if this was an exam, even with bonus points.
I welcome all comments, you may post whatever you are inclined to.

SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
@SuperMagnetizer You are only thinking one-dimensionally. This would be observed if we could see in the dark. It's not an optical illusion, it's the physics of moving objects relative to the observer. Look up time dilation, and watch as much of the explanations as you can to get an idea of how it works.
UnderManiac 1 year ago
We don't have time dilation. It's all an optical illusion. A two-mile train approaching at 0.866c will appear to be foreshortened by a factor of 2. It will look like it's one mile long, because each end of it will be optically shifted toward the observer by the same factor of 2. The tunnel will appear likewise from the viewpoint of observers on the train. It's all an optical illusion. The only Proper observations are those made by observers in each frame of each other as they pass.
SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
@SuperMagnetizer How do you figure there is no time dilation? Both time and length changes relative to the speed of the train. The observer on the train doesn't see the train as shorter, but the stationary tunnel as shorter than the train. The outside observer sees the train as shorter than the tunnel.
If the train was stopped, both the train and the tunnel seem to be the same size. it's a frame of reference, not an optical illusion. Length and time are relative to the observer.
UnderManiac 1 year ago
PART 1
At 0.9900c, from the tunnel, a 7-mile-long train whose engine is 7 miles away and caboose 14 miles away will appear to be 7.089 times shorter. The reason is because its engine will appear to be at 0.98745 miles and its caboose will appear to be at 1.9749 miles. The train appears to be 0.9875 miles long. This is not because the train has suffered any actual shrinkage, but because each end of the train is optically shifted toward the observer. The surrounding scenery is not shifted.
SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
@SuperMagnetizer The effect is not just optical, it would be a real thing. Only to the outside observer however. Space-time around the train would cause the shrinkage, but only to the observer outside the train. To me you're saying it's because the information we see by reflected light causes us to see it that way and nothing is really happening.
In order for light to be the same for every observer, space and time must change.
UnderManiac 1 year ago
The speed of light is not constant, even if it is measured to be. Just as we see the sun rise and set, it doesn't. We spin. Just as we see the Moon tracking daily from east to west, it doesn't. It actually orbits from west to east monthly. We have to be cleverer than our measurements, knowing they can mislead us. And we must not allow the math to rule the physics. At optical distance 1 mile when gamma equals 7, lightspeed is 7c but appears to be c. Train speed is just under 7c but appears 0.99c.
SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
@SuperMagnetizer The speed of light would be the same for you if you were going 1/2 the speed of light as it would be if you were going 99% the speed of light. What would change is your length and time. You'd never notice this change, since you'd be squashed similarly and your body rhythms would slow as well. Only the outside observer would notice that effect.
UnderManiac 1 year ago
PART 2
If a large clock is mounted on the train, it will read the time at which the train is actually at 7 miles. At 0.9900c, the train will take a certain measured time to reach the tunnel. At this instant, the engine's apparent and actual positions will coincide, but the caboose will still be optically shifted by relativity factor 7.089 toward the observer. What seemed to be a 0.9875-mile train covering 1 mile in that time is actually a 7-mile train covering 7 miles in that absolute time.
SuperMagnetizer 1 year ago
This is true there are things about time we don't understand but we know time is a measurement and a variable because we have time dilation. I believe a greater understanding of time will explain the paradoxes of the Measurement Problem and Heisenbergs Uncertainty Principle.
nickharvey7 1 year ago
Yes you are right the Hidden Variable is the supposed causes of apparently random quantum events. But no one knows what the hidden variable is or if it even exists. Such a variable would have to affect all the matter of the Universe and the variable of time dilation has done just that. Sometimes I feel time is seen as Philosophy because we do not understand it.
