Sorry about this, but a last question to anyone here....anyone have a multi-track recorder?? Use polychords on this with your chord and maybe the book chords, or maybe some others to see if you can get the right end sound. Tough group for live bands to cover....they did so many cool things not to mention the vocal harmonies aren't the easiest. I think thats why most bands that do Beatles will do something simple or just do their own version without even attempting to duplicate.
Wouldn't it be nice if George Martin's son put a package out of all of the songs individual tracks....he has them....would clear up a lot of things. I love your study on this, but then with the Anthology, as someone else said, it seemed a bit different than the final version they went with, so a lot of the early takes could have been buried, or polychords used, as they did on the first chord of A Hard Days Night, so us guys with a single acoustic just try to get close as we can with what we have
@taxisteve929 and another thing with final versions is that singing and bass lines can change what we're hearing....any addition. Just want to say thanks for those of us lazy guys who live for the Beatles, but have neither the talent nor tools to disect all of this great information. Anyone who has ever written a song knows that one of the things you do is play with different voicings so I think you're on the money here....but the final I think buried or eliminated most of it. Thanks again!!!
@taxisteve929 Yeah it would be nice if we ever got those individual tracks. I agree that what we hear on early tracks is often changed, buried or whatever, but we try our best to come as close as possible. The spirit is most important but sometimes just sometimes you want to sound exactly like they did. Thanks for the message, cheers
A definite possibility, but it will take a while for me to learn. I'm just a hack. There are a few good tutorials out there on the song that you should check out. But I'll try to get something out there soon. Thanks.
@jpm2u i think you under estimate yourself and you are much better than other tutorials as you go into greater detail. Looking forward to your next video!
ahh i know his videos i think i posted a comment for my request but there were way too many other comments, this song(nirvana u know ur right) is giving me a very hard time,i started ear traning some days back i can transcribe notes, but chords are hard for me just yet.
thanks! Do you only teach beatles songs? Cause ive been trying to learn nirvana-you know youre right acoustic for a really long time any help regarding the chords would be very welcome.
I've been thinking of doing others as well. I'll get around to it, hopefully soon. In the meantime there is another tuber out there who is really talented and much better than I am. He is called privettricker. Give him a view and send him a note. I'm sure he'll be able to do it. Thanks for the message. Cheers.
I'll tell you, Joe...you really have me taking a closer look (listen) to the released (non-Anthology) version of this song. It does not sound as though he is using the same fingerings as the Anthology version. It sounds as though the chords are all 1st position. I have always played the released version almost exactly like privettricker's version (except I use the same F#maj7 fingering you use at the beginning of your video...it looks like he's playing an F#m). Upon closer examination, it......
@dragonjo8 appears as though privettricker may be playing an F#m11 (2,4,4,2,0,0), which is a very close cousin to...you guessed it...an Aadd9. The Beatles often used chord progressions where the high E rings throughout (remember "I'll Be Back" ?).
***NOTE*** I posted that I use the same F#maj7 chord you use. I meant to say F#m7.
@dragonjo8 Perhaps the chords all sound in first position on the released is that John is using a nylon string guitar in that recording which tends to mute the highs. However in take 8 I can still hear the high E on 7th fret
being played where the F#m7 or F#m11 should be (pretty sure there). The transition from E to Amaj7 2nd fret is easier however I believe the phrasing of notes doesn't work from Amaj7 (2nd) to Aadd9 (5th). If you concentrate on the D string (2nd fret) and...
....move the D string up to the 7th fret (where the Aadd9 is) you will see that it is an awkward interval. If I seem awkward playing the Amaj7, it's because I need more practice. Anyway. I'm standing by the Aadd9
until I find another chord that so closely resembles an F#m7 and also hits the high B note on the 7th fret of high E. Privettricker is awesome BTW and I've learned a lot from him.
The Amaj7 at the 2nd sounds nice. Can't agree that it's more fluid to move from the 2nd fret to the Aadd9 than what I'm doing. As for the Aadd9 or F#m7, the two chords are very similar, but on the Anthology, I can clearly hear a B note on the 7th fret of the high E which led me to the Add9. I thought it strange at first but considering John's fondness for add9 chords not so strange. But an F#m7 works fine as I mentioned in the lesson. Thanks for the input and support Joey. Cheers
@jpm2u You're right...my mistake. I meant going from the E to the Amaj7 shape you use. Several times during your video it appears as though it's an effort (it is for me). It is much easier to get to the Amaj7 with the shape I use and, believe it or not, does flow nicely into the Aadd9 (just slide that pinky up 3 frets as you drop your remaining fingers into place). You disagree because you're used to the other way. Practice it my way for 15 minutes and I'm sure you'll change your mind. :)
Hey Joe...once again, a marvelous rendition. With respect to the version on Anthology, the chords you use are correct. It is very difficult to hear these chords on the released version of the song (I'm not entirely convinced he uses the Aadd9...it might be the F#m7). Regardless, the way it's played on Anthology is the way you play it here. You might consider playing the Amaj7 by barring strings 2-4 at the 2nd fret and adding the G# on the high E with your pinky.
@jpm2u LOL...love it! Yeah Joe...really liked the vid. You're a great guitar instructor. Am learning so much from you. AND...am one of the worlds oldest Beatles fans. May have something to do with the fact that my last name is McCartney. Anyway...way to go. Ta!
I love your rendition of this classic. However, I digress on the c#minor progression my friend. Consider using the c#minor with a barre then take off the pinky finger and place it on the 7th fret of the A string (sort of like a c chord). And the final verse at the end...that's a G#7 - not a Major. haha...oh well...what do I know....anyhow, I always love watching you play. btw...got my guitar fixed and working on Magical Mystery Tour and All Together Now...both fun songs to play
Hey there Von, in the words of Steven Tyler, I'd love to agree with you but then we'd both be wrong... ha ha ha.
I tried the pinky on the 7th fret of A, but that gives me an E chord which doesn't really work, (perhaps I'm not understanding you correctly). And sorry, but at the end, the chord is a G# not a G#7. Anyway, glad to hear your guitar is fixed and looking forward to hearing the two songs. Cheers mate.
Hey Joe. Just wanted to say ever since I've found you on YouTube my playing has gotten so much better, not just playing beatle songs but everything in general. Just wanted to say thanks for doing this for us it's much appreciated :) xx
I'm really glad to hear that. That's what tube is all about. I've also learned a lot from other super generous and talented tubers out there. Thanks for the kind words and support. Cheers, Joe.
Are you kidding? mjsokes is a god! He is absolutely awesome and I've learned a lot from him. Privettricker is also another monster talent who is so prolific it's scary. I sub to both those guys and am a big fan. Thanks for the support BTW. Joe
@jpm2u Wow, actually I've been watching privettricker's videos, and I've learned a lot from watching both of them. Just letting you know that you easily compare
Your observations on this song are perfectly correct Joe . what an ear for music you have. I have heared all the versions and the subtle differences many times, but could not have worked it out as accurately as yourself.
Rather big ears, ha ha ha. I think I got the chords right. But when I finally figured it out, it sounded so right as I was playing along with the all the studio takes. Had the headphones on and was playing along with John and the boys. Kinda felt as if I was in the studio with them. I got to get a life....ha ha ha. Thanks Paul. Joe
Joe, your listening skills shines through on this double lesson. It takes a finely tuned musical ear to discern the chords in the second version. Well done! How about an Anthology version of All Things Must Pass in the near future? Keep up the great work, you are the gold standard for accurate Beatles lessons.
Hey V. Thanks mate. I was actually really excited about this song, because when I finally figured out
the chords and played along with it, it sounded so right. All Things Must Pass....mmm.... I have to get to that one of these days, but before that, I've promised you a lesson on My Sweet Lord which I want to do. Anyhoo, hope all is well. Later and thanks again.
Cheers so much! Learnt a lot from this! You're a great teacher!
