Just bought this camera. Get hold of it this week some time. I would like to know what lens I should buy. I have a family so will do people photos. We do a lot of sports and I like taking landscape photos. It would be good if anyone can help. Thanks
i am kind of stuck of which camera i should get the 50d or the 60d. I want some fast allround burst's for sporting and also a a camera i can take single shots with
@Sjoues Canon EOS 60D has and 18MP Sensor and 50D has a 15.1MP Sensor so the 60D will give you larger images and the 60D also has better ISO than the 50D. But the 50D is more solid because it has a magnesium alloy body.
@meisterquitte085 The purpose of video in a DSLR is because the lenses give such a great film effect. In fact many film makers use a depth of focus adapter to a DSLR lens to get that fantastic effect. So chances are the 50D and others like it will have far better results than most camcorders in the same price range, even surpassing many of those 5-10 times more expensive.
there's no doubt that this space regarding what's semi professional and pro is little now. d7000 is perhaps all we all want, check out... free dslr . com remove spaces and take a totally free d7000

@DGKskater757x You probably wouldn't want an xxD camera then, since it has a bigger, heavier magnesium alloy body, which may not play well with you when skateboarding. You should check out the Rebel T1i/T2i/T3i (or 500D/550D/600D if you're not in America, same cameras with different model numbers) for your stuff.
@DGKskater757x There's also the 60D and 7D, but they're more expensive. Although I don't know why you wouldn't want a T2i just because someone else has it; it seems a bit like an odd reason not to. The T2i is a great camera and share the same image sensor as the 60D and 7D but for a much cheaper price.

@639426 if the megapixels rlly matter to u that much and ur daughter rlly deserves it the why don't u just not pay rent for the next few months and buy her a 25 pixel nikon d3X
just shot a second video using this camera, only had the camera two weeks, it is a great camera to shoot with...check it out Ls centz i lost my baby and Ls voicemail...
hey digitalrev, which one u think is better and would you recomen between the canon 50d and the canon t2i, i'm thinking bout getting one of these in a week from now, friend birthday coming up. it's really hard to decide, please help, it's gonna be my first camera...thanx
how much is this camera? my girl wants a camera and the camera she wants its okay but ehhh its just a 12mpg camera i why not a 15mpg i just want her to be happy, but still how much is this camera and im guessing i have to buy the lens separately dont i? should i wait for her to chose the lens or just buy both camera and lens? please help me out she deserves this camera.
@639426 why not a 15? megapixels aren't everything; in fact 15 megapixels and18 (canon 7d) are gonna show you the quality of your lenses real fast. This is a "prosumer or serious hobbyist camera, more than any casual shooter"needs" make money with my old 6meg canon dslr..for web stuff 6 is perfectly fine,
@639426 I hope youre just trolling. Megapixels are not an issue any more, if a pro was doing a lot of billboard work THEN it becomes an issue. I've blown up images from my 40D (10mp) and the biggest issue was the printers DPI, 150 DPI just isnt sharp enough to show up a DSLR or the lens. You could blow up a 6mp image to A3 and still see the printer letting things down..
Unless "your girl" is doing some REALLY extreme cropping then stick with what youve got and put that money into a quality lens
@Skumpcake Actually that's good to know, I;m a beginner tho, and in the process of getting a D80 for less than retail price from my work, So Really I can't complain about processing of Raw file speeds :]
Hello :) I am looking for a good canon camera and I am stuck between the Canon 50d and 500d. I want the camera to have excellent quality pictures that a crisp and clear. no dude, ca is fine... simply put, if u want a dslr u gotta love all of its ups and downs. ca mode reduces inconvenience especially if your novice photographer buddy (who happens to not have a dslr yet) wants to get a feel for a dslr for self assessment.
if u are a fan boy, may it be canon, nikon, or some other brand, u gotta trust ur brand. surely they wont put something that will destroy their rep in the long run.
ca mode is there for a reason, and i have just given one of them.
the 50d has everything i need for advancing in photography. shutter speed not so fast, nor too slow, resolution not so high, yet can slil provided great images.. it fits in my hand perfectly. it feels solid. i love it...

How interested in photography are you? Thats really what it comes down to. The 50D you'll love the either way.(It's compared to the D300). But if you really want to get into photography and stay with it (and if you have the money) you should go with the 7D. ONE reason the 7D is more exspensive is bc it has HD movie. So if your going to buy a Camcorder you could actually save money by buying the 7D, but if you already have one you probably would never use one or the other.
904SF, the sensor size in the 7D is slightly larger, which has great benefits. But if you want a bigger sensor, I'd just go full frame and spend the extra money. . . you cannot beat full frame.
@UrbnProspector Haha, you're spot on! But there are many people who want to take photo's with a dslr, just to look pro, or expecting higher quality, and find a 500d or something similar just to small (gripwise) and choose the most affordable one with a big body. Sad thing, but i've seen it happen in many stores.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hahha, I originally purchased the 50D and I didnt really like the feel of it. it felt hollow and too light. it didnt feel professional. I switched to a D90 and its amazing
DigitalRevCom: Thanks for posting these reviews. But man, you guys NEED to invest in a good microphone. The quality of the video and speech are so disproportionate to one another. Is this driving anybody else crazy?
I'm currently using a 400D/XTi and I'm considering upgrading to the 50D. Since the price for this camera is quite high, I'm just wondering if the upgrade is worth the price? Or should I upgrade to the Nikon D5000? I could use help! Great review!
Please watch and subscribe. I'm 17 and i have been told i have a gift with a camera. Photography is my life. So please help me live my dream. and support me God Bless.
so I'm a about to be a beginner. I'm thinking about buying Canon XS. When would be the right time to upgrade? What would I get from the 50d that I wnot get from XS?
If adding video doesn't decrease the other functions of the camera in any way, I don't see why it shouldn't be there. It was like adding video playback to portable MP3 players. People were against that and now it's a normal, and even required, feature.
It's only when adding a new feature by sacrificing existing features (like image quality) that I have a problem with. Not everyone has the money for a HD video camera, so it's a handy feature for plenty of people.
Thanks for the video. I will be getting one in a few months. I thought about waiting for the 60D but in truth I'm not really bothered about HD video and the 50D seems good enough to me.
You don't know what 15MP means? This is a serious camera and one would assume you know the basics if you are looking to get one of these. Otherwise, stick to the 500D...
The 500D is probable the most "point and shoot" DLSR (out of the Canon range), it certainly is marketed that way. The small size is appealing to women (not trying to be sexist here) more so than the larger, heavier DSLR are.
It's like: "You want awesome photos of your kids/friends/family? Then get the 500D, it's like a P&S, only way better. It's small, light, compact and easy to use!". It's like it's trying not to be a DSLR but with all the DSLR features.
I agree. I was actually so impressed by the 50D that I bought one a few days ago. I have been comparing it to my friend's 1000D (which is smaller than the 500D) and can see the massive difference. The thing I find most pointless about beginner DSLRs is the kit lens provided: I think many point and shoots would provide better images. The 1000D (and the 500D) also have a very plasticy feel to them - I don't like the front heavy feel. However, the 50D is extremely well balanced with a 17-85 lens
If I had the cash on me right now, I would buy the 50D over all the other camera in it's price range :-).
I went into a store (yes, a real shop!) the other day and held the 500D and the 50D and boy, the difference in size/weight is huge! The 500D really does feel like a toy camera in comparison.
I've never held a 1000D but I can assume what it feels like.
I have rather large hands and the 500D is just out of the question now. Time to start saving for me :-).
I know what 15MP means, but that can be a very misleading number and says nothing about the quality of the pixels.
If you are reviewing a product, instead of reading a bunch of stats off the back of the box you should go over each point and give your opinion... otherwise you really arent really providing a service, are you?
If you google reviews of the site you saw the camera for $500 you will find no doubt that the operation is a bate and switch type of site that will cause you nothing but headaches..
No you haven't! Cheapest 50D is £1200 which is closer to €1400 and the 40D in England is £829 which is about €970. Wish they were €850 i would buy two!!!
Is that body only? must be? Here in Ireland the 40D is €999.95, the 450D is €699.99 and 50D €1199.99. They are the cheapest i could find. Where are your great prices from? Regards K
The only thing that really bugs me is the creative auto mode. I know it's supposed to be dumbed down for the beginner but this will be my first dSLR and I wish canon gave us the benefit of the doubt to be able to learn shutter speed and aperture settings... having the ability to save three custom settings as the 40D has is much cooler.... my $.02
I'm not overly familar with the 50D but do you mean it doesn't have Av, Tv and M on the mode selector so you can work with and learn shutter spped and aperture setting relationship?
when is actually kai join DigitalRev ??

But there are many people who want to take photo's with a dslr, just to look pro, or expecting higher quality, and find a 500d or something similar just to small (gripwise) and choose the most affordable one with a big body. Sad thing, but i've seen it happen in many stores.
richardf1b 1 year ago
@UrbnProspector
I know, right.
My main question is this:
Is this not 720?
Isn't the t2i 1080?
I am more a video guy who uses stills within a video and on my blog, main reason to switch up from the SX20 IS is low light performance in video.

hahha, I originally purchased the 50D and I didnt really like the feel of it. it felt hollow and too light. it didnt feel professional. I switched to a D90 and its amazing
TaGzDRuMMeR 1 year ago
@TaGzDRuMMeR - It felt hollow and too light? Must not have been the 50D. I have the 50D and it is NOT hollow or too light.
alienmurphy 1 year ago 2
@alienmurphy Compared to a D90, it feels hollow and light which I dont like.
Its just personal preference

does this one have a light that pops out of the top? did the 40 D have that light ?
boogy81869 2 years ago
Both 40D and 50D both have built in flash
homersimpson587 2 years ago
It's called flash, and yes - Most of the canon cameras have it, except 5D, 5DMK II and pro series. Low and semi-pro all have flash on top.

Image quality if downgrade from 40d. sorry. Hopefully 60d will be downgraded to 12mp like they downgraded the G11.

DigitalRevCom: Thanks for posting these reviews. But man, you guys NEED to invest in a good microphone. The quality of the video and speech are so disproportionate to one another. Is this driving anybody else crazy?
mickcivic 2 years ago 25
We are aware of the sound issues and will be upgrading our entire set of video equipment in the near future. Thanks for watching our videos.

I'm currently using a 400D/XTi and I'm considering upgrading to the 50D. Since the price for this camera is quite high, I'm just wondering if the upgrade is worth the price? Or should I upgrade to the Nikon D5000? I could use help! Great review!
nokia1191 2 years ago
Don't switch! unless it is absolutely neccessary.
Getting a 50D for an upgrade will be great and you will save more (costwise)
switching will cost you a lot more (i've went through) and you will have to bother with so much hassles.

daejinko100 2 years ago
i have an XS and it take decent pictures
while the xs has a 10.1 MP CMOS, the 50 D has a 15 apsc CMOS and a 6.3 FPS shooting mode

Why do they all add video mode to the new cameras ? If I wanted to shoot a video I'd buy a video camera.
FatGermanBastard 2 years ago
If adding video doesn't decrease the other functions of the camera in any way, I don't see why it shouldn't be there. It was like adding video playback to portable MP3 players. People were against that and now it's a normal, and even required, feature.
It's only when adding a new feature by sacrificing existing features (like image quality) that I have a problem with. Not everyone has the money for a HD video camera, so it's a handy feature for plenty of people.
Each to their own though... :-)

3:28 "SD Card Not Included". Um, duh, the 50D (and 40D) use CF cards! Lol.
Great camera though, I really want one!
3Z3K13L08 2 years ago
Thanks for the video. I will be getting one in a few months. I thought about waiting for the 60D but in truth I'm not really bothered about HD video and the 50D seems good enough to me.

why dont you say what 15 mega pixels means instead of just reading shit off the back of the box?
Kjellhahn 2 years ago
You don't know what 15MP means? This is a serious camera and one would assume you know the basics if you are looking to get one of these. Otherwise, stick to the 500D...
3Z3K13L08 2 years ago
I think that if somebody doesn't know what 15MP means then they'd be best off buying a cheap point and shoot, never mind a 500D haha!
Nialletto 2 years ago
True!
3Z3K13L08 2 years ago 3
Nialletto 2 years ago
If I had the cash on me right now, I would buy the 50D over all the other camera in it's price range :-).
I went into a store (yes, a real shop!) the other day and held the 500D and the 50D and boy, the difference in size/weight is huge! The 500D really does feel like a toy camera in comparison.
I've never held a 1000D but I can assume what it feels like.
I have rather large hands and the 500D is just out of the question now. Time to start saving for me :-).
3Z3K13L08 2 years ago 2
no, no no..
I know what 15MP means, but that can be a very misleading number and says nothing about the quality of the pixels.
If you are reviewing a product, instead of reading a bunch of stats off the back of the box you should go over each point and give your opinion... otherwise you really arent really providing a service, are you?
Kjellhahn 2 years ago 2
I don't give a shit whats in the box im more concerned about the camera! ffs

realdimension 2 years ago 2
No you haven't! Cheapest 50D is £1200 which is closer to €1400 and the 40D in England is £829 which is about €970. Wish they were €850 i would buy two!!!
040506keri 2 years ago
wrong, cheapest 50d is £809 body only and lens kit is £1069.99
atyl1972 2 years ago
in fact cheapest is now £739 rgb
atyl1972 2 years ago
Is that body only? must be? Here in Ireland the 40D is €999.95, the 450D is €699.99 and 50D €1199.99. They are the cheapest i could find. Where are your great prices from? Regards K
040506keri 2 years ago
I just picked one up in the UK for £1099 with a 17-85 IS USM lens
Nialletto 2 years ago
The only thing that really bugs me is the creative auto mode. I know it's supposed to be dumbed down for the beginner but this will be my first dSLR and I wish canon gave us the benefit of the doubt to be able to learn shutter speed and aperture settings... having the ability to save three custom settings as the 40D has is much cooler.... my $.02
epr1 2 years ago
I'm not overly familar with the 50D but do you mean it doesn't have Av, Tv and M on the mode selector so you can work with and learn shutter spped and aperture setting relationship?
russkophile 2 years ago
AV TV and M are standard :)
