I bet they could have made walking legs on a tractor work ok , but crawler belts or tracks or whatever you call them , are just way smoother and more efficient .
@Extremeineveryway But tanks tracks really are more complicated. Every single link (track pad, grouser?) is a moving part needing lubrication, and tension. If one fails, the vehicle is immobilized. The vehicle still is driven and suspended upon wheels, if you look. So you have the entire drive train of a multiple wheeled vehicle, plus the twin track assembly. A set of walking feet can be very much simpler, I have found, in my experiments.
If they had the CAD/CAM software back then, it would have turned out better. I know what they were trying to do, it almost worked. Just needed more refinement
might be slow, but I could see how this would have toooons of torque! Think about slick muddy roads, and how round tires fight to get traction. I could see how with tweaking, as with any product, this walking tractor would be usefull for logging...
For something built in the 40's you have to give the original creators some credit during the era where a true walking machine would be a technological heresy. Even today with robots like ASIMO and others we still take them for granted despite how far it has gotten and how far it WILL get.
My Great Uncle Snell is the man that made this...I also heard that him and his brother were working on a perpetual motion machine, but obviously they could not get it to work...
I believe I was told that they made this tractor hoping it would get through muskeg/bog land. Stuff that would normally sink a tractor, most likely to aid them in their sawmills.
They did have a toy company ask them for the rights to make a toy based on its design but it never was manufactured...
"...I also heard that him and his brother were working on a perpetual motion machine, but obviously they could not get it to work..." Sorry, but I don't think anyone is surprised.
"...they made this tractor hoping it would get through muskeg/bog land." That thing can barely walk on flat ground.
"They did have a toy company ask them for the rights to make a toy based on its design but it never was manufactured..." Again, no surprise...
I get the whole idea behind this, but this is one of those things that is better talked about and thought about rather than actually created.

So, why would you want to do that? talk about taking a step backwards. Might as well reinvent the wheel, while you are at it.

I bet 6 heavy feet stamping the ground thousands of times would be great for soil compaction

@CanadianAiden - Yeah, it's the most ridiculous idea for a tractor that I've ever seen.

this is not the world's only walking tracktor. search on youtube for "alking tracktor". they were around in 2003.
