Delibes's opera Lakmé is full of gorgeous melodies, even if you don't count the coloratura sensation, the famous Bell Song ... Even the few singers who can match her in the upper altitudes can't do it with a voice so rich and full. A beautiful performance. Hiw pathetic if Joan is not note perfect at 50 some gets their undies knotted. But dear Maria Callas coud shake , screech and wobble while in her thrities and her fancs would say O Maria - the only one. Joan;s fans rally do like singing i have yet to get Callastinians who seem to treat the music as a background for her dresses, faces and publicilty.
I made the comparison about Callas - Joan and her career had nothing to be jealous of. You seem to have the axe to grind. Maria was a personality - Joan knew how to sing and well into her 60s.
LOL, history refutes you. Callas was indeed more than a personality.... To dismiss her artistry which transformed opera and call her a personality is an axe to grind. Sorry, and we both know .. who you are, Richie. or Ricky,
@kgarmaker123 agreed! jealousy. callas was not in any way suited for this role, but she dared to sing it and sing it well. They both sang it great but no way do we have anny grounds to compare the two, even if they sang some common roles.
You guys are something else! look, Joan said it herself:"some nights are just better than others" and look guys....in 1976, miss Sutherland was 49-50 yrs....what do women at 49 or so go through? menopause...and I think you critical people forget that she was HUMAN and sang more perfect hich e flats than anyone who ever lived so give the woman a f----ing break once in a while....I think her fast passages are a true wonder of nature 99% of the time....I couldn't love her more GBYdear Joan
To sing this stuff with a voice large enough for any role Wagner composed is quite a vocal and musical anomaly. It must be literally exhausting for Sutherland to sing this. Great post.
She sings this down a half tone, as she did when I saw it in Philadelphia, where the final Eb was much better than here. A boring opera, not suited for her in any way.
The lovely Joan Sutherland performing the aria "Où va la jeune Hindoue" (known as Bell Song)from Delibes' Lakmé. Henri Wilden as Gerard and Clifford Grant as Nilakantha, Sydney Opera, conductor Ric...
She's kind of "hiding" her voice, maybe for making it sound louder for being singing live. And... She IS a coloratura soprano, if you want to listen to a real dramatic soprano, listen to Jessye Norman, Birgit Nilsson or Maria Callas' recordings before 1953. Those are the bodybuilders! The best interpretation of this aria I've heard is from Lily Pons (lyric coloratura).
Knowing the fact that this song wasn't written for her type of voice, she does a great job with it despite that fact. This song is supposed to be one of the more heavy coloratura pieces, and she gets the heavy part perfectly, but the higher notes are not as bouncy as a true coloratura could make them. Dessay and Pons are my favorites, but I like her interpretation anyway.
operaeater and eutuve i think that u are both bieng very childish and outh to be ashamed i mean operaeater i know u are able to have an oppinion and thats ok but i think calling someone horrible is a bit mean. eutuve two wrongs dont make a right and u shouldn have been rude to operaeater and if u two are going to comment like that two each other u shouldn't do it on u tube.
yes Mother, I will never use youtube again.. do you want me to trow away my Pc as well..? should I kill myself ? Let go back to the beginning: If one does not have a nice thing to say ( horrible wasn't nice nor justified IMAFO ) one you refrain for saying anything at all. Same applies to you. You invited yourself to a dance not yours. I will say no more. Do not ask me to. Porquoi me reveiller ?
Sutherland's voice is absolutely wonderful, warm, her agility (given the "power"of her voice) surprising, her interpretation convincing and heartfelt...but probably the role of Lakmé is not the best for her. (she is Stupenda, however)
seems that the one who has not slept in 3 days ( were you bottom up in a gay sauna and "receiving" during that time , while , instead of opera, you were eating hot rods ? )
Shame on me for being so rude to such a fine connoisseur
Yes, you should be really ashamed of yourself. Congratulations. How interesting, expressing your opinion and I get such a nice response. LOL, congrats again.
just try to hear another versions of this aria by JS and then say anything about BAD NIGHTS and GAY SAUNAS:D lol.
Of course I expressed my opinion, or do u even want to me to explain what an opinion is? I said it's horrible, because I have heard so much better from dame JS and I don't think this fits her standards, so that's why I said she must've had a night off. And what's more you were rude to me, not to my comment, and I feel really sorry for your behaviour. I think you'll need luck in life more than me because of your attitude. good luck.
You're really a mess:D I dunno why you need to disgrace yourself by this type of comment. I think you should go to the sauna to calm down a bit, it might help you.
Joan Sutherland was a godess. I wouldn't know what an amazing soprano would sound like if it wasn't for Dame Joan Sutherland. Here the high e's might not be as brilliant as earlier in her career, but to hear a dramatic soprano like, Sutherland or Callas sing it and give it justice is incredible.
She looks like she's playing Norma Desmond in "Sunset Blvd." That guy in blue behind her can hardly stay awake. I wonder if he wakes up by the time she gets to the bells.
I think people who bash Dessay are just too stubborn to accept that opera is a growing and evolving art form. To put it very bluntly, people liked natalie dessay and she got famous. That it the same way Sutherland got famous, and its the same way Maria Callas got famous.
(and to the die-hard callas fans out there, please, for the love of god, understand I am not bashing callas and therefore don't respond with your goddamn "callas is the greatest" speech. enough already)
I understand that you think everyone should have an open mind. I am about as die hard a Callas fan as they come, and I admit she does not do everything better than everyone else. Her Je Veux Vivre is not the best and yes, dame sutherland does do a better job on the bell song, however I do not apreciate your agression and rudeness towards those people who do not share your opinion in such matters, as everyone has a right to post and discuss an opinion.
@flicfan416 (and to the die-hard callas fans out there, please, for the love of god, understand I am not bashing callas and therefore don't respond with your goddamn "callas is the greatest" speech. enough already)
You should avoid writing such nonsense. It’s quite offensive. I like Maria Callas in the measure I think she deserves it. Nothing more or less.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...I pulled out my Mady Mesplé recording of lakmé (absolutely stellar) and compared it to this one...this one is a half-step LOWER than the original key. No doubt that Sutherland could sing, but this role just isn't right for her enormous voice.
Oh, and Natalie Dessay's recording of this is just so BORING. Who cares if the high notes are there? There seemed to be nothing behind them.
ok.....now when I make a comparison between this and the one in which DESSAY sings, I can only cry of despair when i hear to sutherland! this woman is just like gruberova! she cant sing with ease....she struggles so much that hearing her singing gives you stres!
Your pitiful admission that you "don't know much about this Sutherland" (!) suggests that you ought to SHUT YOUR MOUTH until you do learn something about singing and singing history.
who? dessay or joan?? look.....the bell song is clearly a COLORATURA PART....and joan might be the greatest soprano and the most skilled singer and i dont know what other nickname she has, but she is NOT a coloratura....joan is a dramatic soprano....its like a body-builder who's trying to dance ballet!! i dont know if u get me.....so UNFIT for her voice
oh....you're another person, part of them who think of sopranos as "the greatest ever" just because they have lived in the previous generation.....who have been singing since 1950 or so right? like joan sutherland, maria callas, and others right? well dont let this fact blind you....you have to be either deaf or stupid to think that this interpretation of lakme is better than dessay.....all this woman showed in here was technique...dessay showed technique, voice quality and HIGH NOTES
yes, one among millions and the majority always win. What you said was so stupid as your stupid answer. Now, besides your stupidity... mr knowitall , ask her after her 3.5 days career to sing with the same Technique, VOICE QUALITY and HIGH NOTES that Joan mantained for 4 decades... you stupid rabbit!
so this is what this is about????? TIME? dessay in the 1980-2000 was the greatest coloratura soprano that has EVER existed.....and still today, when she has lost her high notes (not her voice quality) the tickets to her "lucia di lammermoor" and "la sonnambula" are always sold out....you might not like dessay but millions of ppl do.....from the 80 years old tobacco-store owner, to the 5 year old little kindergarten girl....so STFU im tired of your immature and pointless insults....
Just because someone doesnt agree with you doesnt mean he is a stupid asshole...the only thing you show is immaturity...you probably have a hard time being loved and accepted by others right? thats why you were unable to grow up mentally and get maturity....well im sad for you my friend....now, contrarily to you i have a life, so im not gunna continue this conversation, but if you want to write some more insults go on get it off your chest, i will ignore you....again good luck growing up
For me Joan Sutherland,Amelita Galli-Curci,Maria Barrientos, and Maria Callas recorded this piece so beautifully. Sutherland coloraturas brings beauty and grace to this piece.
I know this is about Joan but watch the dude in the blue behind Joan, on the right side of the screen.. He keeps dozing off or something. How could anyone sleep through THAT? lol @4:37, his head snaps up and he looks around to see if anyone saw lol Love Joan though!
skitzo has got it right! suherlands versions of this on record and audio all show the same flaws. and i don't really understand it, except that this aria is consistently high and consistently calling for staccati which seem to be overdone for the heavier sutherland voice here. i think the trap she and bonynge fall into here is trying to make her voice sound lighter, as callas wrongly did with her higher soprano bel canto roles--except norma of course. peters bests her here hands down!
No this is really something for real coloraturas. Nothing for big voices, no Callas, no Sutherland. Who can sing all is not the best specialist. What a difference to a vivid, fast Pons or an etheric Hallstein.
On the other side. That age and still a vocal power. Respect.
Everyone has an off night. Better an off night, than an entire, if short, career singing out of pitch, courtesy of Maria Callas. By the way, to Skitzo429, philisig, and other snatches pissing here, go back to customizing ring tones on your PDA. The Sutherland recording of the Bell Song is the the most perfect execution of any aria by any singer any time, with the possible exception of Galli-Curci's Caro Nome.
She has to transpose, and her diction is so bad! What a piece of cheating! If she couldn't tackle the music in its original key, she shouldn't have sung it.
I love this...but remember so fondly recordings with Monte Carlo opera, and of course Art of the Prima Donna...She's getting a bit heavy here, but great rendition!
there are MANY sopranos that sing this better than her, simply by the virtue of the fact that there are many sopranos that can sing all of the high notes in tune, Joan Sutherland cant, there are numerous recordings of her singing this (transposed down to Eb to help her), and the same notes are always out of tune. She was far too dramatic to be singing light lyric roles like this well, which she proved, by never singing them well.

LOL, history refutes you. Callas was indeed more than a personality.... To dismiss her artistry which transformed opera and call her a personality is an axe to grind. Sorry, and we both know .. who you are, Richie. or Ricky,
kgarmaker123 2 years ago
I respect your musical opeinion- your silliness is innapropriate it.
65attila 2 years ago
@kgarmaker123 agreed! jealousy. callas was not in any way suited for this role, but she dared to sing it and sing it well. They both sang it great but no way do we have anny grounds to compare the two, even if they sang some common roles.

I agree with dzaidy...she is too flutey. Too mannered. Lots of power though when she wanted to.

The best interpretation of this aria I've heard is from Lily Pons (lyric coloratura).
gustavox1985 2 years ago
I don't know what your definition of coloratura is...but um...yeah. Sutherland is the prized Dramatic Coloratura....Sutherland...not coloratura...ah.
CatalinaDM56 2 years ago 2
Knowing the fact that this song wasn't written for her type of voice, she does a great job with it despite that fact. This song is supposed to be one of the more heavy coloratura pieces, and she gets the heavy part perfectly, but the higher notes are not as bouncy as a true coloratura could make them. Dessay and Pons are my favorites, but I like her interpretation anyway.

jorgeandresossa 2 years ago

Sutherland's voice is absolutely wonderful, warm, her agility (given the "power"of her voice) surprising, her interpretation convincing and heartfelt...but probably the role of Lakmé is not the best for her. (she is Stupenda, however)

I think you'll need luck in life more than me because of your attitude. good luck.

K,
I understand that you think everyone should have an open mind.

There seemed to be nothing behind them.

oh....you're another person, part of them who think of sopranos as "the greatest ever" just because they have lived in the previous generation.....who have been singing since 1950 or so right? like joan sutherland, maria callas, and others right? well dont let this fact blind you....you have to be either deaf or stupid to think that this interpretation of lakme is better than dessay.....all this woman showed in here was technique...dessay showed technique, voice quality and HIGH NOTES
killerbunny123123 2 years ago
yes, one among millions and the majority always win.

TIME? dessay in the 1980-2000 was the greatest coloratura soprano that has EVER existed.....and still today, when she has lost her high notes (not her voice quality) the tickets to her "lucia di lammermoor" and "la sonnambula" are always sold out....you might not like dessay but millions of ppl do.....from the 80 years old tobacco-store owner, to the 5 year old little kindergarten girl....so STFU im tired of your immature and pointless insults....

skitzo has got it right! suherlands versions of this on record and audio all show the same flaws. and i don't really understand it, except that this aria is consistently high and consistently calling for staccati which seem to be overdone for the heavier sutherland voice here. i think the trap she and bonynge fall into here is trying to make her voice sound lighter, as callas wrongly did with her higher soprano bel canto roles--except norma of course. peters bests her here hands down!

Lily Pons and Maria Barrientos are the only coloratures to sing this aria better than La Stupenda.
stingabe 3 years ago
there are MANY sopranos that sing this better than her, simply by the virtue of the fact that there are many sopranos that can sing all of the high notes in tune, Joan Sutherland cant, there are numerous recordings of her singing this (transposed down to Eb to help her), and the same notes are always out of tune. She was far too dramatic to be singing light lyric roles like this well, which she proved, by never singing them well.
