I take groups of seniors to movies and really appreciate your perspective -- love your reviews more than Rotten Tomatoes! Can you cover "The King's Speech" with that is released in late November?
I love your bi-faceted reviews of movies. You've got maturity in your perspective, a good grasp of language, and an immediacy in your feeling about the pictures. I like yours better than Rotten Tomatoes!
i thought this was one of the best movies i've ever seen. it was clever that the movie was as mysterious as dylan. a great documentry to understand dylan is no direction home, but that only shows his life up until his car crash in 1966, the rest you should research. see the movie, research dylan and then see the movie again.
I think that the images and dialogue in this movie are powerful enough to draw in even someone who knows very little about Dylan's life. Everyone who has 2 hours to spare should see this film.
It's a very creative film and I admire that. But the idea of making a film about someone where the whole idea is that you can't do that... it was boring to me. It's fun at times, but it ain't Dylan. He's a chameleon, sure, but he's not some total mystery. He's utterly human and real. The film is all parody, very phoney. Especially coming on the heels of Scorsese's superb documentary, which featured Dylan himself being so candid and real, and his wonderful memoir, this is hardly insightful.
"I don't think this is going to have a young audience."
I am 16 years old, I'm absolutley dying to see this. I've been excited ever since I saw the trailer, I can't find it anywhere yet... but I'm searching and I can't WAIT. I'm a huge Dylan fan, (he just had a birthday) and I want to see this more than anything.
I actually saw this one. I'm no big Dylan fan, but I am a music fan, particularly of music from the 60's. My favorite scene is when The Beatles show up cavorting in the background. It's been a few months, but wasn't there a Woody Guthrie scene reminiscent of Alice's Restaurant? I know parts of this was shot in Montreal although they tried to make it look like London, and being from Montreal, I recognized every location.
My girlfriend hated it. I loved it. We have a love-hate relationship...
I think the reason most people had a problem with the movie is because they were expecting Bob Dylan, and then they spent to much time worrying that they wouldn't understand it,instead of just enjoying themselves.
i'm not there is not a bob dylan biography. it's "inspired by the music and many lives of bob dylan" and it exporesses just perfectly how bob dylan "works". it's just exactly him. i love it.
i adore i'm not there. it doesnt necessarily teach much about dylan or give as much feeling as his music but it was so cool and interesting. it was more of an interpretation of the time and his "essence" i guess. it was so great and i love pretty much everyone in it. :] and i disagree.. this movie totally would be loved by young people... :] i love it.
I was dissappointed in this film. I feel that a linear story, played by the six actors, & directed in a quirky yet comprehensible way, by a Terrence Malick on steroids, would have presented Dylan's depth in an appropriate way. None of this film moved me the way many of his lyrics and songs do. I feel that Todd Haynes tried too hard to be avant garde in this film. A simpler, more direct film would have done justice to Dylan more than the forced effort to be "non linear."
I'm 17 and absolutly loved the movie. I was anticipating it for forever!=]
Also, I thought that Hanes attempted to connect the "dylans" with the one who was answering questions the whole time(sorry I can't remember the actor...=/)
I'm 18 and not a huge Dylan fan of any sort, I do appreciate his music, but I found this movie amazing. I remember prior to seeing the movie Cate Blanchett was in it and I was waiting and waiting to see her then I realized she was Jude Quinn nearer to the end and I couldn't believe it. I knew something was weird about her but I couldn't place it. It was however more obvious the second time. The Richard Gere parts I didn't really follow perhaps due to my lack of Dylan knowledge but overall great.
I disagree. I have limited knowledge about Dylan, but after seeing the film, my interest was increased tenfold. It was one of the best technically made films of the year, and Blanchett's performance was incredible.
Excellent review, and an even better film. a male 18 years old saying this, there's your young audience. Of course I am delusional, and belive I was born in 1958, so maybe they're right.

Euuuuuggggh, Bob Dylan is so boring.
His music is dull, i hate to imagine what the movie of his life is like. Ick.

I think anyone can watch this movie, this is not particularly a biopic of Dylan. This has to do with the times.

this review however, is fantastic and hilarious

This movie was boring compared to a 4 hour documentary?
bigmooseextreme 4 years ago
at least the documentary was going in a coherent direction and we actually learned something about the subject through it.

I'm 17 and this is one of the best films of the year along with Zodiac and The Assassination of Jesse James.
I'm a huge Bob Dylan fan but didn't know a lot about his life, but after seeing I'm Not There I wanted to research as much about him as I could.

I agree with Lorenzo about "Safe" - it seems very few people have seen it and it is an amazing film. Julianne Moore's part in that was so memorable.
I know a lot of Dylan fans in their 20's and think this will be just as big with them and people like me, in our 30's, as anyone older.
