It is absolutely fantastic that the video tape from the AnimeCon 91 COSPLAY survived and uploaded here for fans to get a perspective they otherwise never would have had. I also was at AnimeCon and I sat to the right and somewhere in the back as I recall. Wish I could have gotten a closer seat. However, I was lucky enough to seen Rob Fenelon many times during the Gamelon Embassay days on the east coast. Thanks Rheinhard! I hope the Double Trouble Dirty Pair here somewhere on YouTube as well.
I was there as well. 2nd row. I was one of the primary people who started up the "Desslok! Desslok Desslok!!" Chants each time.
And the utterly FANTASTIC thing about this is that Rob AD LIBBED the ENTIRE THING. Even his responses to the "heckler" were on the spot greatness! "Well I lost something in translation!" should go down in history as one of the greatest come-backs ever!
This is a great video! Funny stuff and witty! I come here and watch this video every couple of months, always makes me laugh! I only wish there were more of this Disslok impersonator!
Can't believe I stumbled on this. I was actually there in that room during this convention in San Jose. I was working for a video pirate at the time...
I was in the room during all that! Wow that brings back memories. Wasn't this the first cosplay in America? Huge Japanese guests just walking around everywhere. It sure was different back then. I remember accidentally crashing Haruhiko Mikimoto's birthday party. Please post the clip from this cosplay with Kenichi Sanoda.
No, certainly not the first cosplay... Project A-Kon in Texas had run twice before this with a masquerade, and before that people were wearing anime based costumes at other cons for years (Rob had had his Desslok costume at Lunacon since the mid-80s).
Thanks Rheinhard for a blast from the past from an old friend. I was an early member of the Star Blzaers Fan Club back in '79. I met Bob Fenelon in '83 at WorldCon in Baltimore and we had an 'unofficial' SBFC meeting there. Still have my photos of the get together in our costumes goofing off. Anyway, thanks for the Desslok/Desslar American Express Card Fenelon classic! Hope he's still in NYC doing well!
Thanks for the comment! I have more from this video and several other cons, it's just a matter of sitting down and finding clips of under 10 minutes in length that are worth posting. I hope next month to have some time to add more videos.
another cam corder version of this I just discovered I still had. cheers!

Did he make that costume? If iwere to have or make a Star Blazers for something like this it would be Derek Wildstars uniform.

It feels good to say I WAS THERE!!! I miss the "old days" before the thralls of people made going to the convention less fun than watching avatar.

Yes, knew him well. Too bad he wasn't able to assist Admiral Cutter in battle against the Ramalion Empire.
