He hit straight on into the wall at about 160mph. He had fractures to his foot/ankle, femur, about 8 fractured ribs in addition to the skull fracture. All the force from the hit came in on the car compartment. Just because he didn't bounce off the wall or rollover doesn't lessen the severity of the impact. Wall collisions are the ones that produce the fatal injuries.

The way i heard it was that when he crashed into the wall, his chin hit the steering wheel so hard that it cracked the base of his skull and he died instantly.
The doctor that seen Dale when they took him to the hospital in Daytona was also my grandmothers doctor when she fell there on vacation. I talked to him for a few minutes about Dale. When he hit the wall the impact over extended his neck and the aorta artery was broken. He died from internal bleeding. Anyone can argue the point but I had the chance to talk to his doctor personally.
Even if he didn't die instantly, he would loose consiousnes in 2-4 seconds. and never wake up. He MIGHT know something is wrong, but he would also know the medics would take care of him (not his first crash). AND even if the aorta wasn't ripped, (blood loss- make him pass out in the 2-4 seconds ) - the SHOCK would knock him out.
He was dead when the first paramedic arrived, who immediately began to administer CPR, at no time did he show signs of life, and was declared dead at the scene by several attending physicians, and then finally confirmed dead at the hospital.

He hit straight on into the wall at about 160mph. He had fractures to his foot/ankle, femur, about 8 fractured ribs in addition to the skull fracture. All the force from the hit came in on the car compartment. Just because he didn't bounce off the wall or rollover doesn't lessen the severity of the impact. Wall collisions are the ones that produce the fatal injuries.

It was a basilar skull fracture that caused massive hemorrhaging in the skull. That was from the blunt force he sustained during the crash. R.I.P Dale Earnhardt :(

The doctor that seen Dale when they took him to the hospital in Daytona was also my grandmothers doctor when she fell there on vacation. I talked to him for a few minutes about Dale. When he hit the wall the impact over extended his neck and the aorta artery was broken. He died from internal bleeding. Anyone can argue the point but I had the chance to talk to his doctor personally.

Even if he didn't die instantly, he would loose consiousnes in 2-4 seconds. and never wake up. He MIGHT know something is wrong, but he would also know the medics would take care of him (not his first crash). AND even if the aorta wasn't ripped, (blood loss- make him pass out in the 2-4 seconds ) - the SHOCK would knock him out.

He was dead when the first paramedic arrived, who immediately began to administer CPR, at no time did he show signs of life, and was declared dead at the scene by several attending physicians, and then finally confirmed dead at the hospital.

(Agree) to me, it LOOKED like he was LOOKING over his shoulder at 'shrader'. Then hit the wall. and that would hyper-extend anybodys neck.... - we were not designed to take that much G-force deasileration....
I didn't know about the aorta - does make since. (I have seen an aorta rupture from somebody vomiting too hard)!

From my point of view the crash was minor compared to alot of crashes that accur in the sport,but it was still high speed, it was more down to the angle he hit the wall, also if i am correct he did not wear the HANS device as it was not compulsary at the time of his death, at that point it was more or less a recommendation to drivers.

This video is incorrect. Dale Earnhardt DID die because of the crash he was involved in at the 2001 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. He died from a basilar skull fracture. Just go to his page on Wikipedia if you need any proof - that's where I got my evidence.

@sweetj8621 Yes, he was going 180 mph when he hit the wall. But he wasn't going anywhere near 180 mph in the direction of the impact. It was probably about 60 mph into the wall if you compare the distance he covered in the direction of the track to that which he covered going across the track during the final moments of the incident. This was not a big impact compared to many easily survivable crashes in motorsports. There's another factor involved here.

NASCAR covered-up the fact that Dale was actually DECAPITATED by that wreck. Paramedics found his helmeted head in the rear of the car and his twitching, headless body still gripping the steering wheel! Look at Felipe Massa at the Hungaroring '09. A small spring wrecked his helmet and he had to be put in a coma.
