@yiyuwazza Tom Waits actually wrote this song for Johnny Cash and it first appeared on his American Recordings album in 1994. Waits later released it on Orphans.
I didn't realize Tom Waits wrote these songs. I had only heard Johny cash's cover of them (I have all of Cash's American Recordings albums). The thing about Johnny Cash is he could take a song someone else wrote (take these songs, Rusty Cage by Soundgarden among others) and could make them totally his own style.
@hookitonup Takes one to know one, so hook-it-on-up to the hipster fag train...I call dibs on your well-worn, purple, puckered asshole, you dirty slut. Afterwards, we can all have a latte at a pretentious coffee-shop while you pretend not to cry about the freedom you feel at finally becoming who you really are...XXXOOO
Well if Waits could write such a song about redemption, you know he understands it. And the fact that he included Judas Iscariot and John Wilkes Booth as examples of redeemed. . . well, that's just sublime. If Waits doesn't believe then neither does Johnny.
@coldsharkride I dunno if they were redeemed or not; that's a bit above my pay grade, but if the Holy Spirit fills us, Judas wouldn't have had any room for Satan to move into him. Ultimately, that would mean that Judas was never saved to begin with. This, of course, leaves room for some debate, provided that the Bible is correct.
Look at me, waxing philosophical. We're to judge righteously, but I honestly don't know in this case.
johnny cash was a true legend, Im sure tom waits was happy when he heard Cash would be covering his tune, both are amazing autuers of music each with their own unique sound
@TheSidewalkCipher When I listen to both, I hear that Waits, at least in his version, doesn't have the range that Cash does. He's almost monotone in it.
Great! Love it...the singer, the song,..Cash singing Waits. Incredible combo...And Cash singing his own Redemption and Big River, of course are always great! Thank you jackogreene for posting!
Tom Waits and Johnny Cash are two original artists who didn't live in fear of the corporate spectre; modern music has been altered by the sordid, controlling, plastic influence money brings with it.
If you shake hands with the devil, you have no soul!
Will we ever see artists as talented as Cash and Waits again?
Look at the talent in the original version of "We are the World" and the talentless hacks in the new version. It is a completely different music world now.
Well, to be fair Tom Waits is still kicking. And modern is music is great, you just need to find the right stuff. There's lots of bad stuff but TONS of good music. It really is a good time to be a music fan :)
And the old stuff isn't gonna go anywhere, so you'll always have staples to fall back on...
I always get this overwhelming feeling that everything is going to be alright when I listen to Johnny Cash, he just has a calming effect on me no matter what he's singing. Big fan of Tom Waits, big fan of the man in black.
i really love the song. both tom waits and johnny cash need to talk to God from time to time, when they do that, it always touches the soul deeper than any priest can ever imagine.
InowTom Wait's version is in Brawlers, Bawlers and Orphans. But whern did it appear before, since this cover is from 1995.

“One of my favourite songs on this album was written by Tom Waits. I hope I can do it justice tonight.”
This cover proves that Johnny Cash is the antithesis of hubris.

Rest in peace Johnny Cash. Long live Tom Waits!

Great song and awesome performance, but I really prefer Tom doing it. I think his voice and style suits it much better than Cash's.

Great combo of talents. I'm a huge Tom fan, more than anybody, Johnny included, but Cash owns this song completely.
