Just to let eevryone know that I think that one of the UKs crime magazines are running a feature on this, and a few other stories where what was reputed to be said, have since come into question.
February 2012 editions of either True Crime, Master Detective or True Detective.
Lord Goddard who sentenced this boy to death loved to sentence to death and ejaculated while he passed sentence. His trousers had to be sent to the cleaners by his valet. He was a pervert who got his jollies by sentencing people to hang.
This was an appalling miscarriage of justice. The conviction was ruled as a mistrial in 1998 on the following grounds. The Judge misdirected the jury. False evidence concocted by the Police. Conflicting evidence never presented to the defence counsel or jury. This (plus the Timothy Evans execution) is why I am totally opposed to the death penalty and regard any nation that still carries out judicial murder like this as backward and barbaric.
we had to watch this in school because one boy thought the death penalty should be brought back, and when the film finished i looked round and i wasn't the only one crying. its a rare occurrence, but the boy who thought it should be brought back has a one track mind, so he still wanted the death penalty.
Derek did nothing wrong, he didnt even know what was going on. This is just one reason I cried at this video.
@danty362 There is no conclusive evidence that Derek Bentley ever said these words. 3 police officers, no doubt anxious to see someone hang for the death of their colleague alleged he did. Crucially another officer stated at the time the words were never said. Even more significantly in his only interview since the case Christopher Craig stated categorically that Bentley never spoke those words.Thankfully, but 45 years too late for Bentley, the conviction was overturned.
Christopher Eccleston is a such a fine actor, I remember seeing this when I was 15 and it made me cry back then, It still does now. So sad, he was obviously a complicated young man and back then they would have had little or no understanding about his condition which made him such easy prey for people like Christopher Craig.....
This film is a great film i watched half in my school at first i wasn't interested But i had to finish it the ending is sad but still good film 10/10 :)
@pritypritiana Dat?? Ffs, get rid of the 'd', insert a 'th' and you are good to go. 'Food for thought'....just because it may 'sound good'....doesn't mean that it 'LOOKS GOOD'. Just remember, there are more educated people on this site, than uneducated.
I suspect those huge double doors Mr. Bentley and Derek exit through at the approved school are the other side of the huge double doors at what is supposed to be Wandsworth prison (the great blue doors we see later in the film).
Sorry for being graphic, but here goes. Ask people what happened to the Judge every time he passed the Death Sentence on someone. Really....
Secondly, I'm told that if you were a barrister, a lawyer , whatever, and were to question the boy's conviction, your profession was on the line. The Establishment saw to that. This went on for many years.
poor bloke, he wasnt all there.. fukin mugs was only doin a job for money. i bet they cant sleep over it.. all he wanted was his mate to give the gun to the coppa. greedy cunts init. was it worth gettin ptsd and be a murderer?
@PebblesDave were doing the whole play of Let him have it.. its a very hard play to do XD so many emotions you have to portray.. but its fun in a way XP
tragic, even if he was english, to be hung an innocent man. that said, the death penalty is best consigned to historys' bin. its' nothing other than state murder...
this is a work of fiction loosely based on the actual story. if you get the DVD it will state a disclaimer to that effect.
Craig Craig never heard the words "let him have it". That was a line concocted by three policeman in this case, from one of their earlier cases to ensure a guilty verdict for derek bentley so that one of them could be executed. Derek never met niven craig, Niven Craig however remained a criminal most of his life in prison still at wormwood scrubs until the late 60s
lol... love the kind of speaking in this film... It so funny! I love this film. Just love it. I like the actors too. Good acting. I feel bad for Derek. "let him have it Chris". Thanks 4 uploading it! ^_^
There were a number of stories about Lord Goddard's reputed prediliction for sentencing young men to death and experiencing sexual gratification from doing so. Then, as now, there was a great deal of public concern about a Juvenile 'Crime Wave', maybe viewing this film should help people to make a realistic appreciation of the significance of this sort of comment.
I have heard it myself but I find it a bit difficult to imagine that was true... as he carried on being Lord Chief Justice until he was 81.... I find it hard to believe a man in his 70's would get ejaculations so easy.....
Well it takes all sorts; there was of course the little matter of his blatantly unfair summing up at the trial which is a rather more definite matter of fact.
aww, my grandad knew im... how could they!! they hae no brains!! seriously! they have no right to hang him! omg... :( i never knew my grandad though... they could of gotton info from him :(
If you're going to watch the rest of film, which I strongly suggest, keep an eye out for all the foreshadowing of Derek's ultimate demise:
Shadows which look like nooses, people adjusting their "neckties." In one scene, when Graig's gang pays a visit to Derek's window, the clothesline in the background looks exactly like a gallows.
Also, listen for clock bells going off (For whom the Bell Tolls).
The little girl who sees them breaking into the warehouse is saying the Lord's Prayer.
The case of Derek Bentley was simply the British government at that time was going to make someone pay for the death of that policeman.
There was a great outcry at that time from thousands of Britons, the church and numerous M.P'S to spare Bentley. Without a doubt if Craig had shot a civilian Bentley would never have been hanged.
In most cases when the jury recommends mercy ( as they did ) the judge has discretion but again it was a police officer that was killed. The point was made.
well, in R.E we are learing about death because in mexico they belive that you should be sad when someone dies you should celebrate it then we watched the death in this film now we are learning what we really think what a soul is to us :)
Wat a sad story
