Why is it that if you own a Harley you have to hate japanese or any other brand of bike that is not "American made"or vice versa. I know it's not everyone that feels this way. But what is more American than freedom of choice. Now, picture everyone who rides riding Harleys. All you Harley guys would love that, for a while anyway. But, eventually it would get boring even for you. The same thing goes for Yamahas or any other brand. It's diverisity that makes things interesting. Screw it, lets ride
@geerjammer I own Harley's "Sportster & Night Train""and a Honda "Older Goldwing", I find the opposite to be true, more Harley owners are accepting of jap bikes then jap bike owners are of Harley's. about 90% of Harley owners started on jap bikes"my 1st bike was a 71 honda 350", about 75% of jap bike owners have never rode an American or British bike "iron horses"! percentages were pulled out of my ass, but pretty close none the less!
@GamesterX69 I don't know where you live GamesterX69, but I think the remaining 10% of Harley riders that started and stayed with Harley live near me. I'm just talking about personal expierience. When I'm riding I've been known to wave to mopeds, scooters and crotch rockets, and they wave back. I can count the number of Harley riders that wave back during a riding season on one hand. And, yes I wave to more than 5 of them. I know not everyone feels this way, obviously your one of them. Ride safe
@geerjammer I live in the Chicago area, even the local Outlaws that hangout at the bar I go to has a member that rides a 85' Vmax sometimes, Im sorry for your experience but maybe its time for you to move! as for comparing a HD to a Yamaha its like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Porsche, the Porsche will out perform but the Rolls is a far more beautiful work of art, I never come out of a bar or store to see guys drooling over my goldwing or a chick begging for a ride on it!
""yeah but i would rather spend more money 2x as much in some cases to buy a machine that isn't as reliable as the asian bike just so i can say i own a harley. The only reason the"Harley"guy's""im not saying all""" that put down the asian bikes and say we are harley wanna be's is because they already spent big bucks on a Harley and didn't do their homework and review the Royal Star and they are now in a class of people who made a mistake and dont want to admit it ;they will come around in time!!
two wheel riding is what it's all about guy's,enjoy the ride whatever its on.ROYALSTAR OWNER-great dependability and smooth ride.never owned a harley and dont need to.this star will last me forever.the royal star is a design of it's own,if not there would have been a lawsuit.let's face it the royal star is a better deal for the money,if the guy's riding harley's want to spend their money on a harley,"so be it"if you want a great bike and save thousands of bucks -BUY THE ROYALSTAR.
Blah blah Yamaha, blah blah reliable, blah blah, whatever. There is no better cruiser than a Harley. Period. That's why your Japanese bikes try so hard to look and sound like them. Why ride an imitation? One of two reasons. You ain't got the chac-hing to afford the real deal, or you got it but wifey won't let you spend it.
So console yourselves with statistics and myths about more reliable and better handling. Maybe one day you can get what you really want. A Harley.
@RFR192 WRONG! We do NOT all "wish we had a Harley" like the posers do! I can well afford a new H.D. but I'd be stupid to buy an outdated motorcycle at ANY price! Don't reply back to me about 'true bikers' and all about the 'Harley Mystique' because every time I hear that, I just want to laugh in your faces, besides, I'm OK with my penis size! I'll take a Triumph Rocket III Touring, Kawasaki Vulcan, Yamaha Venture, or Honda Gold Wing a-n-y-d-a-y over a Harley!! 40 years of riding hard!
Most people are not aware that this video is from 06? The 2012 Harley's are now sporting a 103ci engine and not to mention the 110 on the CVO's. As far as reliable, search around YT and look at all the Harley's from the 20's 30's 40's 50's 60's 70's 80's 90's and 2000's. These bikes are still running and running pristine. I have buddy's that drive around the country, also have buddy's that drive them everyday. Ride what you want, but there is no ride like a Harley!
Got a 08 Road King this spring & put 14,000 fast miles on it in 6 months. Rode it through a snow storm in Boise and another one in southern Utah. I rode through the 100+ degree desert in Las Vegas and the cold rain in Washington State. From sea level on the coast to over 9000 ft in Wyoming. Rode the twisty tight mountains of British Columbia and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Best damned bike I've ever ridden and I've rode em all. See you wannabes in my rear view mirrors. Try to keep up eh!
Word of mouth and popularity is what made HD's resale value so good and people to hang on to a dieing company. But that is all about to change because the people today buying bikes can think past what WAS cool MAN!!!
I own a royal star from 1996. Never saw any garage except to change carb pipes a year ago. That's real fact. I don't have any opinion on harleys regarding maintenance as i never owned any. I find them really fine looking bikes and the route 66 myth is still strong but nevertheless, as someone rightfully stated before, those HD are not made in america anymore and that's a pity.
The real problem is that being a yamaha owner, i do not dislike HDs. The contrary is often true though. It's a shame...
harleys might be expensive but they are worth it. i just felt from my sportster and nothing happened to the bike those things are tanks. you can buy one at a young age and dye with the same bike at an old age. thats why harleys are expensive. you have to own one to understand
The harley looks better, sounds better and most of all when its time to upgrade there is a market. The ricer will be scrap metal in 25 years and the hog will be in someone garage.
i like the styling of the harleys. they need to step up to the plate and start pricing their bikes with in afforability for all. i bought my first yamaha for 4100 brand new. then my vstar 650 for 6100 new. never a problem. plus ive heard about all the problems harley has. no thank you. i cant experiment to see if they are better bikes.
Both great bikes. Rode 6200 Km with a group of 8 HD baggers and 1 lonely Royal Star - but the RS had a slight edge on our baggers going uphill and especially at high altitude it seemed, and every time he passed me, I found the bike attractive and the riding position looked quite comfy. Fit & finish was better than expected and an aftermarket pipe gave it a nice throaty sound. Still prefer the street glide...but can't knock the Royal Star.
I own an 06 rstd and the stature is larger and more comfortable than the bagger. I have road the bagger, the rstd is more refined and is smooter at all rpm ranges.

HEAR YEE! HEAR YEE! The hardley Stupidor's yell foul foul How dare Yamaha build such a machine(since 1982) Whoe's is me they say! It's smoother, faster, more RELIABLE. WHOE'S is me Why do they build such a machine The Hardley Stupidor say's,I'm mad as HELL! I'm gonna show that Yamaha what this Hardley's made of. I'm gonna pull ahead just a little bit I'm gonna make him loose his hearing!
I couldn't quite make it through the video. The guy's voice had my head on the keyboard 20 secs in. Are they serious with this narration? Motorcycle reviews should be fun, guys. This sounded like a NASA space toilet instruction video. Actually that would be cool, I wonder if there are any of those on youtube...
I think you compared the bikes tastefully, but when it comes down to it, as long as people are out there riding on what THEY like. That is what it is all about. Peace
Listen to it. The Yamaha beat the Harley. More power (beat it on the dyno), better handling, better saddlebags, removable windscreen and back rest (without having to pay extra as you do with Harley). Face it, Harley had it's day. It's time for them to wake up and start pricing there bikes and parts in the realistic range. You can wave the American flag all day, (I am a veteran of the US Army) but Harley is no more American made anymore than the Yamaha or any other brand. Look at the packaging!!!
@jimbob6323 I would have to say from experence the Yamaha Royal Star holds it's value just as well as a Harley. I recently sold one of each and the resale of the Yamaha was better than the Harley.
@outlawracer2229 Hey sellout, this was from 2006, let's see a comparison now with the new Harley 110's, 103's and 96ci's and not to mention, did you hear the narrator, the Harley was a "bit" behind on the Dyno and the Yamaha handled a little better, but which one would people rather have?? Which one is worth more in twenty years?? If the Yamaha even last 20 years. It is just a shame that you don't know what it is Jack..
@wq1299 Sellout? Hardley Ableson sold out years ago. Look into the factory they have in Korea or the one in India. 98% of the "Geneuine Accessories" are made in Japan or China. Half of the bike is built in Japan. The V-Rod was designed in Itaily. Hardley's stock is about in a free fall right now. I rode and wasted money on those damn things for over 20 years. If I'm a sellout for wanting a decent reliable bike so be it.
@outlawracer2229 My bike was assembled right here in York PA. That is all that counts with me. You obviously never owned a Harley, because you would never make such a stupid comment about reliability if you did own one.
@wq1299 Going by that thought process this little conversation shouldn't have ever happened. Most Asian brands are assembled here in the USA so that makes them American made. By the way, I rode Hardley Ablesons for 20 years. That's how I know their unreliable, it's called personal experence.
@outlawracer2229 You ought to do some fact checking, some of those makers have recently sent operations back overseas. But I really don't care where they are made, I would rather walk than throw a leg over one of those copy cats.
But being lucky enough to have both a Yamaha and a Harley I am the person that can really tell the difference
The Yamaha is unbeatable when it comes to quality and maintance. Cheap parts that will last forever. I use it everyday to go to work and until now no signs of failure at all
The Harley however has many defects when compared to the Yamaha. But those defects make it human. Humans make mistakes, robots don't. It's defects make you love it
I grew up in a rough house with bikers. I was taught life lessons from guys named "Frenchy and One Eyed Jack." They fought but not about what each other road. (Usually about girls, booze, or drugs LOL) Triumph, BMW, Harley were the norm.
If I could afford a Harley, I know I would have purchased one. If it would have made me an arrogant jerk who downs others rides...then I would have to pass. Ride on ride Safe
My first bike was a Rebel 250 because it was all my dishwashing tail could afford. Owned a Yamaha Virago, no probs. Now I own a 1700 Midnight silverado, no probs except bolts coming undone from vibration. I always wonder if I would enjoy a Road King. (maybe one day) until then I ride my YamahaHog with pride. The point is the ride. My friends ride Harleys (dyna Low and FatBoy) but they are often having to repair something. Although I dont think it is leaks.
Why would you say that? I drive a 1700 Yamahog. You look like an average guy. You dont look like some wanted dead or alive hardcore biker. I enjoy my bike and honestly, I am an electronic Geek (maybe) but I don't suffer from any type of envy. Matter of fact, I am a quite large, ugly ass biker. Most people shy away before they know me. I do not want to be like you. Especially if it means being condesending. Ride Safe Ride Hard
To compare the Royal Star to the Road King is laughable. It is like comparing a V Star to a Sportster. The Yamaha is a fine bike and I have owned some as well as Harley's but they are definitely imitation Harley's. Get a real Harley unless you want a Yamaha to go along with your genuine Japanese Movement Rolex. Harley's hold their values when the Yamaha drops like a rock into the abyss after purchase.
So buy a Ford truck vs a Tundra simply because it is a imitation? C'mon. A vehicle designed for a style and purpose can be compared w/o having to pocket it as 'imitation' and having that bias prior to review or even reading one.
Ya just like all domestic cars drop in value while the BMW and Mercedes Be z hold their value. Based on your logic then all American cars are copy cats because the Germans made the first car. Didn't Harley go cry to the ITC about import bikes?
Many components such as brakes, forks, shocks, carburetors, electrics and wheels were outsourced from foreign manufacturers and quality increased, technical improvements were made, and buyers slowly returned. To remain profitable Harley continues to increase the amount of overseas-made parts it uses, while being careful not to harm its valuable "American Made" image. "
I bought the 2006 royal star and I have to say...I love it. But in all fairness, I would have bought a roadking..but for the money, the royal star was just a better buy. Its fast as hell..smooth like a caddy..huge saddle bags..and it came with EVERYTHING..i added a new seat and smaller windshield, but all in all..i think the royal star was a best buy for me.
i am also not much for tinkering..i want to get on and ride..not play mechanic..
Man, this guy sounds BORED doing this review. Also sounds like he's reading something someone else wrote, someone who has a larger vocabulary than he's used to.
at least he has a job , i bet you don't seeing that all you can do is criticize and have nothing intelligent to say! this message goes out to ( uptonEMT)
harley is behind the times. An american bike should be big fast and powerful. A harley is big but slow and outdated. I just wish we had a bike that was something decent until then yamaha all the way.
Harley is behind the times? Harely sets the bar. This video says Yamaha has a sissy bar and windshield that can be removed without tools. WOW.. Harley has that too. As far as price, I shopped all makes and models before I bought my Road King. The Yamaha and Kawasaki crusiers that I liked were around 16k. My thought: if your going the spend that kind of money on a new bike, cough up the other $3k and get a Harley. You won't regret it! Rode mine from Dallas to Atlanta and back... with ease!
Everyone meet me at the All Harley Drags in Commerce this weekend and we can discuss this "Harley is slow" thing. Ya know, if I did get beat off the line by a Honda (it hasn't happened yet), I'd still burn his ass on top end. Another thing....I'd buy a Victory before I bought a Honda. AMERICAN IRON. HELL YEAH!
Buy what you like ride what you like the last time I knew everyone still had a choice .There are Jackasses on Harley's as well as metric bikes find a good group and just ride while we still have that freedom Thats what its all about let's not forget it
Bikes are like people, each has it's own characters. We're all riders and what we all share is the freedom of the open road, and I wish if we all share our experience with each other about our bikes, not post lousy comments about each other. You can only say your bike is the best,if you've tried all of the bikes in the world, and I doubt that someone with all these bikes will find the time to post comments on youtube. So in the end I wish you all a happy and safe riding.
Guys, seriously...relax! Ride whatever ya want & don't care what people think. Leave other people's bikes alone. I can only afford one bike at a time, so right now I have a VMax. Some day, I'll get a Harley, and then maybe a BMW, and then maybe a Triumph, then who knows? No modern bike is crap, and it's a little racist to keep up the "Jap" and "rice burner" stuff. Harley obviously makes great bikes, but the imports have some great things too like shaft drive and liquid cooling.
soft tail deluxe and it pops 110 ponys on the rear bumper and you know what jap suckers all my friends in college whith jap craps dream about my harley so be it..
you know whay harleys are not that fast couse you need to go slow because every boty can turn there heads and say whooooooo thoe japs shits are faster because they cant beat that and they will never be better than harleys
Let me guess, the Hardley is actually your dads bike because no 24 year old can afford one, its like getting a mortgage payment. And buddy guess what, Hardley assembles their bikes here in the USA using a european engine and asian parts. And one more for you, Honda owns 20% of Hardley stock. Have a nice day with your dads crappy mutt bike.
Let me reply, I bought my first house at the age of 21, had one built at age 24, bought a business at the age of 26, had another house built at the same time. Oh, I got my 2001 RK NEW at the age of 23. It's called going to school, STAYING IN, and getting a decent job. Some kind of a rarity these days I guess.
@xisitmex LOL, I used to own a V Star, I loved it, the only problem was all the girls came up to me and said "Nice Bike" Is it a Harley.....I got fed up with that after a while, when I finally sold it I got less than £3K for it !!!
Harleys don't leak oil anymore because they are all belt drive now and not chain drive. Since when are Yamahas reliable, anyway? My Virago was a POS but I never had an issue with my Road King or V-Rod.
its all about the personal taste harley might or might nt be a better bike its about the old westen style and style cannot be compaire with who is stronger or better in performence ... its the passion.
Consider an 2007 SRT Charger and a 1969 Charger, the SRT is better on paper, but the feel and essence of the `69 cannot be matched by anything today. That's what makes the Harley top the Yamaha. You either get it or you don't. Many will never appreciate the Harley, just as many will never appreciate an old muscle car.
the most sinciere form of flattery is copying. Good work yamaha, some day you will built bikes as good as harley, but that day will be long after the downfall of man.
Sotven you're funny. First Harley copied Indian. Secondly, Yamaha already makes better and more reliable bikes at a better price. Test the two for yourself you're probably a sucker for image and names anyway.
Harley never copied indian, which was known for its inline engines as oppsed to v twins originated and perfected by harley half a century before the first jap crap. Indian emerged about 15 years after harley. finally, if i am funny, so are millions around the world who own a harley or more, and many more millions of people who dream of a harley. I wonder if jerk applies to all the rest.
Jap crap? LOL! That why they created the V-rod because Harley failed once again on the Superbike circuit. Couldn't compete! Furthermore, if it wasn't for all the jap components in harleys from Electrical to fuel systems they would have gone under in the nineties. Notice how they don't market made in America anymore?
Everytime I go out with the group it is always the Harley breaking down or leaking oil. Makes you wonder why the big three automakers are struggling while the japs keep on selling. Hey I'm not saying they don't make nice bikes but come one man the engineering ain't the same.
They never intented to go on superbike circuit. cant go with a vtwin against inlines for hp. besides, did you ever sheck out who has the fastest world record of all companies ever? harley, 525,18 kmph...
oh I forgot to mention. Indian came out with singles and twins in 1901 and Harley later in 1903. It wasn't until 1927 did they experiment with the four. As I said Indian first American maker. You should research your history dude.
Who gives a crap about who made the first V-twin? Harley has outlasted Indian by a huge margin. And please, show me ONE Japanese power cruiser that's better than a V-Rod. They don't exist.
So basically the reviewer is saying the Yamaha was better than the Harley in almost every aspect, but the Harley won simply because it's a Harley? He said the Harley has a better personality and exhaust note. This just proves these bikes are marketed to poser dweebs. If one day I decide to buy one of these overpriced pieces of shit, I'll get the Yamaha.
P.S. I can't even tell the difference between the two.
I'll bet you can tell the difference between a coke and RC cola either... What you fail to realize is that it's not the bike your buying it's the culture. It means something to be Harley rider, it's a way of LIFE. Your not just another "wanna be" on a disposable jap bike bitching about how expensive Harleys are, and how great the Jap technology is.
no, i think cruisers are kinda g_ _. You know, like that judas priest singer. something about leather and big hairy men. I prefer thumpers/offroad. no harleys there. lol!
The riders back in the 70s were a totally different breed. Their life was their bike, and in fact a number of them were quite dangerous (lots of gang related activity, etc). That's mostly gone now due to police crackdown, but the yuppies today are trying to reinvent that image and make themselves look like badasses when in fact they're just a bunch of fakes. Yuppies don't care much about riding as they do about the image. The yuppies would've been the ones calling the cops on the real bikrs.

A Harley.
RFR192 1 year ago 3

@RFR192 Right on man!

It's a shame...

i like the styling of the harleys. they need to step up to the plate and start pricing their bikes with in afforability for all. i bought my first yamaha for 4100 brand new. then my vstar 650 for 6100 new. never a problem. plus ive heard about all the problems harley has. no thank you. i cant experiment to see if they are better bikes.

@outlawracer2229
How does the Yamaha hold its value????
jimbob6323 1 year ago
@jimbob6323 I would have to say from experence the Yamaha Royal Star holds it's value just as well as a Harley. I recently sold one of each and the resale of the Yamaha was better than the Harley.
outlawracer2229 1 year ago
@outlawracer2229 you had one of each, how convenient LOL!
h4rleyhog 1 year ago
@outlawracer2229 Hey sellout, this was from 2006, let's see a comparison now with the new Harley 110's, 103's and 96ci's and not to mention, did you hear the narrator, the Harley was a "bit" behind on the Dyno and the Yamaha handled a little better, but which one would people rather have?? Which one is worth more in twenty years?? If the Yamaha even last 20 years. It is just a shame that you don't know what it is Jack..
wq1299 1 year ago
@wq1299 Sellout? Hardley Ableson sold out years ago. Look into the factory they have in Korea or the one in India. 98% of the "Geneuine Accessories" are made in Japan or China. Half of the bike is built in Japan. The V-Rod was designed in Itaily. Hardley's stock is about in a free fall right now. I rode and wasted money on those damn things for over 20 years. If I'm a sellout for wanting a decent reliable bike so be it.
outlawracer2229 1 year ago
@outlawracer2229 My bike was assembled right here in York PA. That is all that counts with me. You obviously never owned a Harley, because you would never make such a stupid comment about reliability if you did own one.
wq1299 1 year ago 2
@wq1299 Going by that thought process this little conversation shouldn't have ever happened. Most Asian brands are assembled here in the USA so that makes them American made. By the way, I rode Hardley Ablesons for 20 years. That's how I know their unreliable, it's called personal experence.
outlawracer2229 1 year ago
@outlawracer2229 You ought to do some fact checking, some of those makers have recently sent operations back overseas. But I really don't care where they are made, I would rather walk than throw a leg over one of those copy cats.
wq1299 1 year ago
@outlawracer2229 Harley's are more expensive I admit.

Harley's hold their values when the Yamaha drops like a rock into the abyss after purchase.
runningchance 3 years ago
So buy a Ford truck vs a Tundra simply because it is a imitation? C'mon. A vehicle designed for a style and purpose can be compared w/o having to pocket it as 'imitation' and having that bias prior to review or even reading one.
DennisFranz 3 years ago
Ya just like all domestic cars drop in value while the BMW and Mercedes Be z hold their value. Based on your logic then all American cars are copy cats because the Germans made the first car. Didn't Harley go cry to the ITC about import bikes?
tonycoelho 3 years ago
Many components such as brakes, forks, shocks, carburetors, electrics and wheels were outsourced from foreign manufacturers and quality increased, technical improvements were made, and buyers slowly returned. To remain profitable Harley continues to increase the amount of overseas-made parts it uses, while being careful not to harm its valuable "American Made" image. "

aaronthe1201 3 years ago
Harley is behind the times? Harely sets the bar. This video says Yamaha has a sissy bar and windshield that can be removed without tools. WOW.. Harley has that too. As far as price, I shopped all makes and models before I bought my Road King. The Yamaha and Kawasaki crusiers that I liked were around 16k. My thought: if your going the spend that kind of money on a new bike, cough up the other $3k and get a Harley. You won't regret it! Rode mine from Dallas to Atlanta and back... with ease!

Harley obviously makes great bikes, but the imports have some great things too like shaft drive and liquid cooling.

torytrae1974 4 years ago
Consider an 2007 SRT Charger and a 1969 Charger, the SRT is better on paper, but the feel and essence of the `69 cannot be matched by anything today. That's what makes the Harley top the Yamaha. You either get it or you don't. Many will never appreciate the Harley, just as many will never appreciate an old muscle car.
eazyrider17 4 years ago
yeah man, but when you build something better than what you copied, that says a lot. id say harley got owned.
jauhndabz 4 years ago 2
the most sinciere form of flattery is copying. Good work yamaha, some day you will built bikes as good as harley, but that day will be long after the downfall of man.
SOTVEN 4 years ago
Sotven you're funny. First Harley copied Indian. Secondly, Yamaha already makes better and more reliable bikes at a better price. Test the two for yourself you're probably a sucker for image and names anyway.
tonycoelho 4 years ago
Harley never copied indian, which was known for its inline engines as oppsed to v twins originated and perfected by harley half a century before the first jap crap. Indian emerged about 15 years after harley. finally, if i am funny, so are millions around the world who own a harley or more, and many more millions of people who dream of a harley. I wonder if jerk applies to all the rest.
SOTVEN 4 years ago
Jap crap? LOL! That why they created the V-rod because Harley failed once again on the Superbike circuit. Couldn't compete! Furthermore, if it wasn't for all the jap components in harleys from Electrical to fuel systems they would have gone under in the nineties. Notice how they don't market made in America anymore?
tonycoelho 4 years ago
Everytime I go out with the group it is always the Harley breaking down or leaking oil. Makes you wonder why the big three automakers are struggling while the japs keep on selling. Hey I'm not saying they don't make nice bikes but come one man the engineering ain't the same.
tonycoelho 4 years ago
They never intented to go on superbike circuit. cant go with a vtwin against inlines for hp. besides, did you ever sheck out who has the fastest world record of all companies ever? harley, 525,18 kmph...

Yeah I guess its like comparing apples to Oranges. I know harley is successful with dragracing.

However, Ducati has been very successful with the Vtwin.....damn they sound nice.....
tonycoelho 4 years ago
oh I forgot to mention. Indian came out with singles and twins in 1901 and Harley later in 1903. It wasn't until 1927 did they experiment with the four. As I said Indian first American maker. You should research your history dude.

tonycoelho 4 years ago 2
So basically the reviewer is saying the Yamaha was better than the Harley in almost every aspect, but the Harley won simply because it's a Harley? He said the Harley has a better personality and exhaust note. This just proves these bikes are marketed to poser dweebs. If one day I decide to buy one of these overpriced pieces of shit, I'll get the Yamaha.
P.S. I can't even tell the difference between the two.

I'll bet you can tell the difference between a coke and RC cola either... What you fail to realize is that it's not the bike your buying it's the culture.
