That is the reason why they are always traveling great distances looking for food, and they totally disregard staying in places and developing territories. However, if this was a dog without a pack, and if it came near a den with pups, that may have provoked the dogs to attack it.

My dog (cairn terrier) was attacked by 3 wild dogs. He survived because I came outside with a gun, but the bite wounds he did have were all near his genitals. They kept trying to roll him over and bite at that area. He's a tough little bastard though and gave them hell enough that they didn't get a clean bite till i got there.

I think it's there way of 1) completely dominating the other dog 2) Stopping them from breeding at all 3) causing max amount of pain.
