They haven't put out a "good" record since BSSM (or Freaky Styley which is still my favorite) because producers (mainly Rock Rubin) makes them "poppy." RHCP was never a pop band. They've done several pop tracks, but they've gone away from the funk roots of their sound. That's the sound many "die hard" fans look for and miss.

@syunghans i know that every time i got a chili peppers album i would just scan the tracks for like 10 seconds waiting to see if it started off with a power house slap bass riff. Funk is drivin around the bass, and i feel some of there best stuff was when it was in funk drivin. Aeroplane, can't stop, the rollercoaster cover they did, the list goes on. But when that slap bass kicks in on the first verse you can't help but nod your head and say "oh shit"
