The lighting on your Enterprise is brilliant, but the shape of the body isn't quite right. I made a similar looking one but it's lighting was crap, however it's body looked more like the actual Enterprise. If I get Spore reinstalled I think I'll redo it with your lighting.

in a few hundred years when we have warp ships it will be interesting to see how similar they appear. They will probably still require field coils that you don't want sitting right on top of you and perhaps you want engineering to be separated to some extent as well. :) It is logical.

Therefore, the design and shape and hull of the federation starships is not just random nonsense like "laser pointer glued to a plate" although they do appear that way (esp the old enterprise). Of coruse the saucer or primary hull contains mostly living quarters, recreation facilities, science labs, life support and also contains the impulse engines which operate separately from the warp drive anyway. Everything in the design of the ship has a purpose. :)

What many do not realize is that that despite being sci Fi the design of federation starships is partly one of function. For instance. the secondary hull (long cylinder) houses the warp core and other engineering systems. and that the the engine nacelles contain warp coils which are are donut type superconducting magnets mounted one behind another. Also the red spots at the front of the nacelles capture particles which are converted to supplement fuel supplies for the warp drive. :)
