  • 10 years after the sublime performance at la scala she is more dramatic, more tragic and more heartbreaking in her mourning for her lost love! MARIA CALLAS PRIMA DONNA ASSOLUTA!

  • This makes me weep. It feels more powerful than some of the earlier recordings. Living life does that.

  • Beautiful in every way. What a voice and what a great actress. And how f-ing glamorous this woman was!

  • 8 people pretend to judge something that they can never do themselves.

  • Perche' piango sempre quando canta? Mi tocca fino in fondo all'anima. So touches me to my core!

  • She believes in what she sings.Unique.

  • Love of my life. Grande MARIA

  • Callas in 64, still, one phrase of her at this period, conveys more music and art than any other (very good) interpreter of this aria....

It is simply beyond technique or beauty, or expertise, it is simple beyond all that... is sublime art....

  • Ah,non credea mirarti (Oh, I didn't believe I would see this day,) si presto estinto, o fiore; (So quickly extinct, oh flowers) passasti al par d'amore, (You have passed away like love) che un giorno sol(o) duro. (That one day only lasted.) Potria novel vigore (A new life) il pianto mio recarti (My tears will bring to you) ma ravvivar l'amore (But to revive love) il pianto mio, ah no, non puo. (My tears, oh no, cannot.)

  • Insuperable

  • without out words

  • ...it is an ascent to heaven...

  • Two people have got not brain!

  • The magic is how she became the character...vocally and physically.

How I wish her performances of Traviata, Sonnambula, and Norma

had been videotaped! There was only one MARIA!

  • DEAR ALL,

DO NOT FORGET SHE WAS A GENIUS AND CAME TO THIS WORLD TO SHOW TO ALL SINGERS WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WHEN SINGING AND INTERPRETING.

    THIS IS BREATH-TAKING AND DIVINE.

    ALCE2008

  • i love closing my eyes while listening to her and hearing the emotion in her voice... and when i open them again, the feelings are also reflected on her face... beautiful and very touching...

  • There´s nothing better than this. No wonder they called her "La Divina".

    Im in tears!

    God Bless You, María!

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!! I love you Callas..... i have heard a lot of versions and I think that she´s really incredible... yesterday I saw a new incredible singer, a good version by Raquel Hernández.

  • Impossível não ser sugada pela interpretação!! Maravilhosa.

  • I don't like Callas, but I must admit this is quite... perfect!

  • The emotion,,,

  • There is nothing to say .... JUST LISTEN!!

  • amazing!!! I've never seen any of this footage - where is this? is it available on dvd?

  • One of the remarkable things I find listening to Callas is the detail in her performances, this is ravishingly beautiful and she uses the finest gradations of tone and shading of volume, and a huge range of so subtly different facial expressions to make this just sublime. I enjoy many other ladies singing this but Maria Callas makes every moment come to life... each time I listen it seems like there is more to relish...

  • I am so in love with this woman!!!! I don't care if there are any better sung versions out there. For me she has "IT". She connects so deeply to the music she sings, she has that untouchable charisma and pathos...it goes so above and beyond the perfect technique, beautiful timbre, accurate musicianship, etc. She communicates so well - and that is where it is. This aria is incredible.

  • This is just amazing. Amazing for a dramatic soprano to manage such sensitivty and restraint. She acts not only with her face but with her voice. Netrebko should learn from her. Netrebko only acts with the body, (and what a body displayed with aplomb!) and just throws her voice like her alter ego villazon, doing superficial dynamics to make up for a lack of depth of emotion and understanding of the material.

  • Thank you for this.. Amazing..

  • Dessay at her prime only comes near Callas at this point.

  • I was so lucky to stumble upon this video on CUNYTV today. INSTANTLY I got goosebumps all over my body and tears in my eyes... That's music Maria Callas you are the best thanks to your parents, your teachers, your instructors, your collaborators, to everyone that inspired you to become what you became and all those that helped bring to the humanity this gem. Needless to say this video got the same effect on me that I'm listening through my computer same as the one I saw on TV just an hour ago.

  • this is why i am alive

  • Perfect

  • opera is emotion............ as kallas did!

  • I think Maria is unequaled in her artistry. I have read on several occasions that during one of her final performances her voice cracked. does anyone know which performance this was? Better yet is there any video of this?Did she continue to perform? Any info is much appreciated. She will always have my truest admiration.

  • @1garuda23 I think that her voice cracked once at a production of Norma in Paris, in 1964 or 1965. Maria stopped the orchestra and sang again the piece perfectly.

  • @Remalia19 that story is true it happen in 1964 and she did stop the orchestra and sing that note and she did hit the high D perfect

Indimenticabile! Come l'interpretazione del Pirata, ogni nota un brivido!

  • MMM reminds me of a comment I once read about Callas... Even at the «end» of her carreer, with what she considered to be shreads of a voice, with a (somewhat) lessened instrument she could, compared to fully powered and youg singers, move one - or a thousand - to tears with the music, the sheer emotion, the perfect breathing and colour... her genius. Yes, until the end, she was unique. Unmatched.

  • This is not singing. It is a PRAYER!!!!!! Thank you MARIA!

  • @Bassonobile you found rigt words... thank you.

  • This is 1965, with the voice much reduced in volume and range, and just before her last, catastrophic, Paris Normas. Still, what a lesson she gives us in the art of fine singing! The soft, delicate phrasing, still good breath control, exquisite diction, and husbanding of pianissimi, are all admirable. One must also admire the economy in gestures and facial expressions. Artists like Dessay, whose Sonnambula recording is very good, and Bartoli, who has NO BUSINESS singing Amina, listen and learn!

  • @philipc67 sorry to disagree on one thing just recently saw Dessay in this part at the paris opera and clearly callas was part of her inspiration for her dramatic performance, of course adapted to her own voice, and this will be a memory i will cherish

  • Yo i think she is da truth!!!! I love her.... I dont care what anybody says bout maria's voice cause thats proof she can sing beautifully!!! She made me like opera!

  • @kefia28 her singing changed my life

  • Operalover12002

you are right, but it's symptomatical for a pathologic narcissist.

  • Some writer very sagely observed that while others sang in phrases, Callas sang in paragraphs...

  • the only artist who has ever provoked a genuine emotional response from me with Bellini. What comes off as quaint or even cartoonish from others is heartbreaking from Callas.

  • it's really late, meaning her voice was far from her best, but the only thing I notice is the beauty and the incredible emotion she conveys in every single note, every single word. She looks so fragile. Divina siempre
