  • It's very upbeat considering the subject matter!

  • I don't know who she is but is she an older relative of Cat Deeley? She looks similar.

  • Apparently someone called Leah Jane Beranati. She has a studio in Nashville.

Was mentioned on Radio 2 today on the Graham Norton show.

  • @mandywithell I heard it too :)

  • Who sang the part of Joanie tho?

  • Brilliant lyrics and great catchy tune.Pity it ends tragic but the message is don`t drink and drive. This song should be used in a drink drive campagne.

Thanks for posting this track , its brought back childhood memories.

  • One of my all time favourites, thanks for sharing!

  • Think I cried when i first heard this (was about 9)

  • Thank Allah for telephone answering machines, bless the person who invented them. He can listen to her voice any time he feels sad and lonely. However, this may make him even MORE sad. Perhaps he should just 'move on'.

  • @jezebel892 What's the point of thanking Allah when he doesn't exist?

  • Great tune!

  • Joannie has a very nice voice.

  • so catchy...its good as any other songs around today.

  • God they just don't do songs like this anymore these oldies are bloody so great

  • I remember hearing this song on the radio and instantly liked it, a few days later i went to a collage dance at the Madison in Middlesbrough, ..couldnt believe it when i went to the toilet and this song was playing through the piped music they had in the toilets way back in about 78" at the same time was driver 67 and the same happened also,

  • When this came out when I was a kid (about 8 or 9) I always thought it was weird that such an up beat, catchy sounding song could have such a tragic end to it. I was quite devastated when I first heard it. Good song though, and while it is entertaining, it also fairly effectively puts the message across of making sure we patch up any disagreements before anyone leaves to go anywhere.

  • OMG !! Been looking for this , that's for posting

  • To be fair though he obviously gave her a good hiding.

  • @Reluctant6 She has died. How can he do such a thing. Fool. Maybe you are being 'funny'. Jokes about domestic violence aint funny. Got that?

  • @anya933 By his own admission he drank too much and got into a fight with her. She was then so upset (and probably sporting a black eye or had blurred vision or something) and crashed the car. He should be ashamed of himself. And you should be ashamed for trying to cover up for him. Domestic violence can never be condoned. Got that?

  • @Reluctant6 Absolutely. Thank you for enlightening me.

  • @anya933 No worries. Zero tolerance. Even in minor novelty hits from the 1970s.

  • Very, very catchy - it reminds me, funny enough, of Meri Wilson's phone song, even though she isn't even Welsh! Neither am I.

  • Very, very catchy - it reminds me, funny enough, of Meri Wilson's phone song, even though she isn't even Welsh!

  • THIS SONG IS CATCHY AND PAUL EVANS, HAVING A WELSH SURNAME, WAS OBVIOUSLY BORN TO SING! ROLF HARRIS AND KYLIE MINOGUE ARE HALF-

WELSH. AS I'VE SAID BEFORE: THOSE WELSH PEOPLE WERE BORN TO SING!!

    DES, DUBLIN, SOUTHERN IRELAND.

  • @squirell1952 Go Welsh!

    Paul

  • @cd1mp3 who is the girl in this video ? i seem to know her face but can't put a name to her

  • @steve2wardle OK, I'm not Paul, but somewhere down in the comments he mentioned that the actress (whom he did not name) was one of composer Joseph Brooks's ex-wives.

  • just been in the shed and thought '' i'll pop some tunes on'' and low and behold I still have my 7'' single of this, and it still sounds great

  • @eviet27

Thanks to your mom for holding onto that vinyl. Glad you still enjoy the song.

  • @eviet27 It's a great song... Today's music is tuneless, deafening tripe in comparison.

  • Great song!

If you want to remove the black bars just type yt:stretch=16:9 in the tag box. It works most of the time

  • @GRAHAM2109

Thanks for the "stretching" tip. It distorts just a little. I'll leave it and see if I get any comments. Thanks, too, for your comment.

  • heard this on the steve wright in the afternoon show back in the late 80's, this is the firs time ive heard since! dont know why but this song just got in my head haha

  • I remember this record, I played the grooves out of that tiny 7" black vinyl disc and the B-side was called Lullaby Tissue Paper lol

  • @Motzila9372

"Lullabye Tissue Paper Company", the "B" side (Not everyone can remember "B" sides - LOL), was almost bought by Kleenex for a commercial. The key word here is "almost". ;-(

  • class song

  • Ah, the original video, cool. great song and a real blast from the past.

  • Hi Msfyn,

Glad you liked. I'm working on a Christmas video, ""Santa's Stuck Up in the Chimney"

    Paul

  • An avid record collector I admit I was delighted when I acquired this classic the other day. Love it - thank you for sharing.

  • I heard this on radio 2 the other day, a real blast from the past which I'd forgotten all about. Funny how I can still remember all the words all these years later.

  • A really sad song. Really like this song though, with the blond girl in the background hard to believe anyone would want to argue with such a hot babe lol.

  • came out just after my da died i was 8 but always remember this song after

  • I was 10 when this came out, loved it then & typical of me, once I like a song it stays that way! his 3rd U.K hit & biggest reaching number 6 on the 16th-Dec-78. His 1st being 7 Little Girls Sitting On The Back Seat (#25, 27th-Nov-59) then Midnight Special (#41, 31st-March-60. 18 years between this hit & the previous one! Wonder who she is & what she's doing now.

  • Hi, DavidJHarrisonEssex

    Glad you like!

Just to let you know about "Joannie" ....

The girl on the album cover was a model, once married to Joey Brooks ("You Light Up My Life"). The singer, Lea Jane Berinatti was a top notch Nashville studio singer. She's sung with me on other songs, including "Santa's Stuck Up In The Chimney". (A You TUbe video with over 150,000 hits.)

I thought it was a neat song back then because hardly anyone I knew even owned an answering machine, lol

  • @laffs ,

I know Patsy Kensit looks a bit rough, but I think its a bloke playing the Guitar!!!!!!!

  • Don't drink and drive

  • I too remember this song from my childhood. I remember that the lyrics make the lead sound so unaffected by Joannie's horrific death. Sure, he'll never kiss that funny face again, but he can listen to her answering machine message over and over!

  • Merry Christmas Paul! Still love this song.

  • I haven't heard this in 25 or more years

  • thanks Jacky for sharing!!!

yeah brought back some memories, great to hear:)

  • I was 8 years old as well when it first came out. Strangely enough, the song didn't chart in America where it was recorded. Probably because Paul had been out of the music spotlight for a number of years.

  • I have had this tune in my head for weeks - sad person really, but at last I have found it and can now hopefully think of something else. Still enjoy it no matter what anyone else thinks.

  • For nearly 6 years I have had Joannie's answer phone as mine, except I sing it with my name instead of hers!

  • Its an ok song, don't particulary like the chorus though, because it reminds me of this annoying young kid where i lived, who used to keep singing it back in in 79.Everytime i hear it it reminds me of him.
