First you need to read the oficial report posted in the comments section. Second every single pilot has done accelerated stalls as part of their training, what to look for, and how to recover. This pilot screwed up the recovery he never let off back pressure reducing the AOA. Instead he tried to level the wings which actually made things worse.
That's called an accelerated stall! It can sneak up on you when turning final and overshooting the runway center line. Pilots pull back on the yoke trying to tighten the turn and end up stalling the aircraft. Perfect example of how a wing stalls because of angle of attack and not airspeed. Large aircraft cannot recover close the the ground. You can see the spoilers up on the outside wing trying to level the plane. But the wing is stalled and they are useless.

You're all stupid. The reason you can't see the crash is because this was the only bit of footage released by the military. The U.S. Armed Forces are not allowed under any circumstances to release footage showing the death of a U.S. soldier in both respects to the soldier and his/her family. If any of you were in the military you'd know this. Not to mention, this has already been reported on by the CBS News.

Ignoring the idiotic rhetoric in many prior comments, I think it's important to point out the dangers of stalls. This is a perfect example of an experienced pilot who got in over his head. Even with great aerodynamic capabilities, any plane in any situation can be stalled. You don't have to point it upwards. I have to assume he had full left aileron in the final seconds, and it's clear both sides of the wing were fully stalled. Very sad.

Then they do an equally ridiculous right bank. The right wing has too much air over it, pushing it downward even more->

Well gang I have been flying for a long time and looking at this video, I think something happened to the aircraft that was not pilot error. The takeoff was a standard performance takeoff with a level off. The turns appeared to be within the performance limits of the aircraft. He executes another turn and for some reason does not come out of it. By the way to get certified the airplane goes through a lot worse than what you see in the video.

Altitude and air speed are key factors when putting on a display flight in a plane like this, he had neither :(
seban678 the Wikipedia report is NOT the official one and does not shed any details. I read other reports with lots of details probably through Google but have not been able to retrieve them again. They indicated that the CO at Elmendorf and other top brass there were relieved of their command. How anyone in his right senses would put a C-176 through maneuvers only applicable to F-16 and when entering a dive the co-pilot says everything OK.

@767gonza Talking about research, the "former F-16 hotshot" you're talking about (who by the way had 865 hours in a C-17) was the copilot on this flight, whose job was to retract the gears, flaps and slats and monitor the flight. He was not the one flying the airplane.
The aircraft commander had always been a C-17 pilot (with 3,250 hours), and apparently grew overconfident with this aircraft.

@767gonza Little did you know the air force doesnt just "Assign" pilots from a f-16 to a C-17. They would have to go through entire training of the c-17 before they could even fly it. Its not like once you have your wings you can just go fly any old plane. If your a C-17 pilot you only fly C-17's unless you specify you want out to fly another plane and then once that happens you have to go through the entire pilot program for that specified plane.

C17s are designed for and often perform VERY short distance take offs and landings. However, going nearly 75 degrees nose up at that still decently slow speed is nuckin futs. Yet they get away with it, and proceed to do an 80 degree left bank with flaps still set to full using full tail/ rudder, and engines probably completely screaming for a break, and still pull it off. Then they do an equally ridiculous right bank. The right wing has too much air over it, pushing it downward even more->

Well gang I have been flying for a long time and looking at this video, I think something happened to the aircraft that was not pilot error. The takeoff was a standard performance takeoff with a level off. The turns appeared to be within the performance limits of the aircraft. He executes another turn and for some reason does not come out of it. By the way to get certified the airplane goes through a lot worse than what you see in the video.

seban678 why you try to deflect the responsibility from the co-pilot, are you family relatives or something. Your argument that the pilot bears all of the blame is senseless, it is akin to saying that a co-pilot, this one and any of them are there just for a ride inside the cockpit doing nothing, maybe watching the instruments for a few minutes then maybe a nap after the dinner. C´mon it is obvious that you are not a pilot. End of discussion!

He climbed out to 850ft rather than the prescridbed 1500ft, he didnt reach the minimum climb out speed, banked it initially at 60deg rather than 45deg, ignored the stall warning, put 2.4g through the aircraft, then it banked over to 82 degrees, while stalling, then it descended into the ground at 9000ft a minute while still in a stall. Altitude and air speed are key factors when putting on a display flight in a plane like this, he had neither :(

seban678 the Wikipedia report is NOT the official one and does not shed any details. I read other reports with lots of details probably through Google but have not been able to retrieve them again. They indicated that the CO at Elmendorf and other top brass there were relieved of their command. How anyone in his right senses would put a C-176 through maneuvers only applicable to F-16 and when entering a dive the co-pilot says everything OK.

I don't see why you would like to put the responsibility on the copilot so much, since HE WAS NOT THE ONE FLYING THE PLANE. He certainly did not act in the most perfect manner either, but his role in the crash is absolutely secondary to the guy in the left seat, who routinely ignored safety procedures and flew this plane into the ground.

why would you even bother to chuck a plane that size around, unless you were reacting to a missile lock on or some such emergency? common sense would tell you its shear size and proximity to the ground makes it a prime candidate for an accident!

@seban678 there were a total of not less than four (4) C-17 rated pilots in the cockpit and the F-16 hotshot was the co-pilot and he goofed big time. You can find more details on this huge error by asking Google.

You can go to Google or other sites and you will see how this former F-16 hotshot messed up big this time, and not only that one or two generals above him were reprimanded and probably received demerits for not holding the necessary high safety standards specially knowing that this was a flight preparing for a show, not a tactical operation.

@767gonza Talking about research, the "former F-16 hotshot" you're talking about (who by the way had 865 hours in a C-17) was the copilot on this flight, whose job was to retract the gears, flaps and slats and monitor the flight. He was not the one flying the airplane.
The aircraft commander had always been a C-17 pilot (with 3,250 hours), and apparently grew overconfident with this aircraft.

Gregboyds how can you think that the pilots survived, 7 crewmen altogether died in this most stupid accident caused by the pilot who had been reassigned from an F-16 squadron who thought that a C-17 will behave like a fighter jet. A lot of heads rolled due to this accident.

@767gonza Little did you know the air force doesnt just "Assign" pilots from a f-16 to a C-17. They would have to go through entire training of the c-17 before they could even fly it. Its not like once you have your wings you can just go fly any old plane. If your a C-17 pilot you only fly C-17's unless you specify you want out to fly another plane and then once that happens you have to go through the entire pilot program for that specified plane.
