Eleanor amazes me. I have been watching her on youtube wishing i had her talent. I was wondering if someone could help me. What is her best movies or are all good. I showed my mom and dad one fo her dances on youtube. They were wowed by her dancing and even commented later about how amazing she is. They have never done that before. The dance we were wathcing was the one where she dancces with the rope. Ellie is one of my favorites. She is Queen of Tap
@lizzyvance Most of her movies are on DVD. You can go on amazon and find them. They even come w/multiple movies. There's "Born to Dance", "Lady Be Good", Broadway Melody 1936, 38, &1940 w/her and Fred, and "Rosalie". Just go to Amazon and load a shopping card and get your parents to take it to the check out, LOL! I'm sure they won't mind; all talent and class and you can all enjoy; share w/your friends. It's good to know about history in cinema.
@ivegottaheadache LOL I just looked at your age so I guess you can pay, :) Still share w/your friends though; younger ppl need to see Ellie and the bunch back in the day.
tap dancing is actually soothing to the joints and helps bone density. many tap dancers dance well into their 80s and 90s. and as hobbies many senior citizens start tap dancing.
I like her and Fred, Ginger, Gene, and many more, but you have to wonder how bad their legs and joints were in their later years of their lives. I don't know much about any of them, so I didn't know if anyone could share a little info on any of the greats? Thanks!
Tap dancers seem to hold up very well with age. Ellie said she danced everyday well into her sixties and her legs certainly held up spectacularly into her fifties. Of course Fred danced and out-danced many a younger dancer well into his later years. The great Bill Robinson didn't even BEGIN his Hollywood career until his fifth decade! And the Nicholas brothers likewise danced into seniorhood!
It is absolutely unbelievable how talented this woman is...I believe Ann Miller said she was a huge inspiration for her; both women are a sad reminder that genuine talent is tough to find nowadays...thank god for youtube!
Since we are quoting. Fred Astaire said in his autobiography " She put em down like a man. No ricky dicky stuff with Ellie. She danced in a class by herself ,man or woman. Later on in an interview he was quoted as saying" I had 29 dance partner in the movies . I was comfortable and could hold my own with 28 of them but I met my match with Eleanor Powell. No male dancer can keep up with her and it was apparent to me she should be featured in solos. " They remained friends for life though.
To quote dancer/author Jerry Ames,"An abundance of virtuosity wrapped in a radiance of joy reflected the fabulous dancing of Eleanor Powell. Her speed and dexterity displayed in luminous, seemingly effortless performances, produced a dazzling tapestry of rhythm that remains unsurpassed. Happily for us, the warmth and humanity she exuded were genuine." I'D SAY THAT SUMS IT UP PRETTY WELL!
who is the guy in the 1:08 with her?

Ann Miller was more of a hoofer; I think they both take a tap crown in their own rights. Although I have to admit I prefer Eleanor.
