  • Ein interessanter Gast, aber warum läßt der Moderator seine Gäste am Schreibtisch sitzen?

  • stop it... the audience doesn't react?

  • @Hallelujahkay You're right my bad, i didn't know the different terminology. Dress is female, yes?

  • the clash of the humors, both sides answer the other's jokes with "yeah, yeah.."

  • Guys, that was 14 Years ago... So shut the F*ck up :)

  • Young Conan, with that hair and that jaw and that dress, like a BOSS.

  • whats up with the earpice and the loud talk-narration?

  • @1usarobin its a german show so folks had to translate for both parties.

  • Comment removed

  • @ohthehumanity612 i know its a german show, just thought it sounded weird and a bit strange with the earpices xD besides english is a very common language so i would think that most german people understands it so using this kind of translation seems unnecessary. i mean everyone here in sweden knows english and we dont need this kind of stuff, if a hollywood star comes to a show here they can just talk english without someone translating over, we only subtext on tv for the old and for the kids

  • @1usarobin I know about Sweden and also for example the Netherlands where you don't have dubbed movies and all. We have dubbed movies, and English starts late in school (but that changed the last couple of years), so generally speaking, we don't know English as well as most Swedish people do. And you have to consider that this was in 1997. So I think there has been a slight change by now. But still, many English speaking people on the TV get translated like that. But not as many as then.

  • @soundaffair oh ok, i did not know about that:) but yeah this was like u said in 1997, so i would think that we also had somekind of way of translating like they did in this show also in sweden during the time, maybe not so much but a little bit:/

  • @1usarobin wtf should German people speak english on a german programm? Of course most germans do speak english, but i hate the lazy attitude english speaking people have about other languages. Learn German if u wanna watch a german show...

  • @KostaKaramanidis no i dident say that, i think u misunderstood:/ just said we in sweden do not translate so much, but we do it a little bit. ofc i know germans can speak english, and that german is their main language so they are suppose to speak german:) and no i dident say they are suppose to speak english on their shows, it was just the translation of conan i was talking about xD

  • @1usarobin thats because sweden is a non country with a population of only 10 million, they have to adapt the language of superior societies in order to have at least a minimal impact. The german speaking area in contrast has about 12 times the population of sweden, therefore they are self sustained and do not need to adapt the language to such a degree.

  • @ocm4r well, sweden is a country but very very very small so i see your point and your right. dident thought of it like that:)

  • @1usarobin Very very very small compared to what? Russia? :D

  • @92tamkel well, yeah. almost every country like russia, canada, usa etc xD

  • Oh god, shut the fuck up down there and enjoy the video.

  • @Psylocke83 I don't like dubbing. Hell, I watch everything in it's original language no matter if it's English, German, French and for something I don't know like Chinese or Japanese and put on the subtitles. But that's me.

Sometimes, I even find the German dubbers better than the original boring and muttering actors.

Now I ask you, if Swedish television would have the funds and budge to dub everything, would they do it? They would very much. The average spectator prefers to listen not to read.

  • Dieser Synchronsprecher ist alles was in Deutschland nicht stimmt.

  • Short-term goal: TO UNDERSTAND, FULLY, ALL OF THIS, SOON.

  • Molecular Men!

  • Übelster Dolmetscher xD

  • 9:44 conan looks like a turtle / duck

  • He knows English. They're using this format because it's a German show. Learn German.

  • they should have played stockenblaken together...

  • Couldn't even make it to the 3 minute mark before I had to shut it off. X_x

damn, you people down on the continent need to learn how to use subtitles like we do up in the North instead of dubbing everything!!!!

  • @Psylocke83

You mister, are one grade-A douchebag.

  • @Huper88 First of all, I'm not a mister. Do your research before trying to act like you're better than me. Second, I live in Sweden where we don't dub over shit because we can actually read subtitles. It's not that fucking difficult, I assure you. Thirdly, dubbing stuff makes it impossible to hear the original sound underneath, and yes it fucking is impossible to hear Conan speak properly hence why the interview is useless to me even though I love Conan and want to watch everything.

  • @Psylocke83

Alright let me break it down for you.

First off, how is calling you mister trying to act like I am better than you?

Second, you really think Germans are incapable of working with subtitles? Really?

I let you in on a little secret: obviously they work with a live translator because there's a studio audience. Are they supposed to put live subtitles into thin air or what?

So props to you and your people for being able to utilize subtitles. You must be very proud.

    Douche..

  • @Huper88 Let ME break it down to you since you're obviously too stupid to understand:

    1. "You mister, are one grade-A douchebag." To quote your entire first über-intelligent comment. That's def a asshole "I've got nothing better to do than troll the internet" type of way of trying to act better than me. Massive Fail on your part though.

    2. Yep, Germans are incapable of working with subtitles. I haven't seen one single show featuring the people I like with subtitles, only dub. Not nice language.

  • @Huper88 And 3. Sweden do live shows with international stars as well. We don't dub it over in Swedish for live air or for the studio audience. The host takes a few seconds to quickly sum up what's been said and that's it. DEFINITELY less annoying that dubbing over everything, but for the international guest and the tv + studio audience!!

It's not that fucking difficult, I assure you, yet people on the continent have so much trouble with this... Germany, France... like seriously, wtf.

    Asshole...

  • @Psylocke83

I agree, that would be the best solution. However, it requires the host to have sufficient English skills to not only do the interview, but also to translate it on the fly. In Germany quite a few just aren't good enough in English I guess, especially the older ones.

But that's beside the point, I took exception to you acting all high and mighty, like you guys are the only ones capable of utilizing subtitles (as if that's a feat).

That's just major asshatery and you know it.

  • @Huper88 I honestly have no idea why you keep annoying me. I am fully entitled to my opinion - hell you're even agreeing with me! - yet you keep posting these cunt replies to me. Why can't you just go troll someone else?

According to my friends in Germany & France they dub EVERYTHING. TV shows, movies, every fucking thing - even Top Gear! So yeah, I'm fucking right in my opinion, and you know & agree with it.

If someone isn't good enough in English; hire someone who is. Easy.

    Now sod off.

  • @Psylocke83

Yeah let's just replace Harald Schmidt in case some angry little kid in Sweden wants to watch one of his few English interviews on youtube 15 years later. Hahahahah, and you're calling me a troll?

You are not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed are you? Either that or you got a major reading problem.

Either way, I am going to leave you in your simple little world. Feel free to visit reality land time anytime you're ready though.

  • @Huper88 LOL you're so fucking ridiculous, it's unbelievable. :') You agree on the things I say yet have to argue back against yourself to prove yourself right. I mean...really? Which one of us really needs to visit reality land?

Nope, I definitely do not have a reading problem; as I've stated over and over we can actually read in Sweden, where in Germany you obviosuly can't.

  • @Psylocke83

    @Psylocke83

actually a lot of german prefer watching a movie in its original language.im totally against dubs!!please dont say all germans cant/dont want to read subtitles, english language movies is getting popular esspecially among younger generations.since the start of DVDs people can choose whatever language/subtitles they want.this wasnt possible with videocassetts since germany isnt a country of complainers you wont see a sudden change happening anytime soon.

  • @Psylocke83 All your arguments that follow are already destroyed from this point on. You did it youself in this very moment. "hence why the interview is useless to me" It was never meant for you. It was never ment to be put on YouTube. It was made for a German audience that want some jokes and entertainment on German television in Germany. If some Swedish douchbag does not understand the illegaly uploaded interview then Schmidt couldn't care less.

  • @FireOps I said what I wanted to say in my first comment. If some douchebag then went on and called me stuff and instigated a stupid fight over Youtube, you have to take it up with him. Not that it would be any of your business anyway. Point still remains that it's fucking stupid to dub shit, no matter if it's a talkshow interview or Top Gear or movies just because people down on the continent can't read their own fucking languages instead of hearing it.

  • @Psylocke83 Who the fuck gives a shit what you want? This is a program that is broadcast in Germany, not Sweden. As the guy before me said, this isnt made for you, its made for Germans. If YOU dont like it, fuck off, get a pair and deal with it.

  • @Mezzo396 Oh my my, someone is being a cranky little bitch. :)

  • @Psylocke83 Fuck off troll

  • @Mezzo396 Wow, that's intelligent. Did you manage to write that all by yourself? And no, unlike you I'm not a troll. You sent me a rude message, I replied back the only way you could comprehend, seems it still went way over your head though. :)

  • @Psylocke83 Coming from the one who completely ignored my points made in the comment. Great job changing the subject.

  • @Mezzo396 And you completely ignored my points, so don't try to pull that one with me. Read my first comment again and if you still have troubles comprehending it, I'll explain it in more simple terms.

  • @Psylocke83 What point did you make? You simply insulted a whole country based off the fact that you feel so self entitled that an old German late night tv show did not place subtitles on an interview that would be broadcast IN GERMANY. Who wants to read something on the tv at midnight? Think about who their viewers would be? As I have said before, THIS IS NOT MADE FOR YOU. THIS IS NOT MADE FOR PEOPLE OUT OF GERMANY. IT IS MADE FOR GERMANS. Get over it, grow up and get real.

  • @Mezzo396 What are you, like twelve? There's so many things in your comment that just makes me smirk and shake my head in bemusement, you're making it too easy to insult you even farther but I'm gonna show some class here and refuse to take the bait. I could make my point over and over again but you'd still not understand it, dear. Sub, don't dub. My German friends agrees with me, but then again they're actually able to read their language, no matter which hour of the day/night it is.

  • @Mezzo396 Here's one tiny little reason why subs are so much better: because everything can not possibly get translated. Subs sums most of it up but you're still able to hear the actual joke or even interview dialogue as it was intended. Dubs cover everything up and you can't hear shit, thus missing the original point and have to rely on the dubbed version alone - and not all dubbers knows a person well enough to be able to transfer the joke/dialogue properly into a new language.

  • @Mezzo396 So yeah, I came here to watch Conan as I'm a Conan fan & wanted to hear what he had to say. I do not believe that people who are okay to hear the dubbed version of him are true fans as they, as stated, only have to rely on the dubbed version which sometimes have to change the content to make it funny in a new language. If you came here & watched this vid for the Harald guy, fine whatever, good for you. The worst thing i've heard though? Top Gear in German. Like what the fuck seriously.

  • @Psylocke83 Holy fuck, your ignorance is insane.... In your first comment, you basically condemned an entire nation for being 'retarded' because they could not read their own language. What the fuck... You even later insult the majority of southern Europe. Who cares if it should be subbed or dubbed, in the end this wasnt made for you. The people of Germany understand, the people in the studio understand it. Dont go judging an entire people off of a late night tv show. Its pathetic..

  • @Mezzo396 You obviously cared, or you wouldn't have bothered to try and have a Youtube argument with me; *that's* pathetic. :') And no, I'm not judging an entire country or the people living it based on a late night tv show. I'm basing it on *all* the tv shows, movies, etc. that I've had the unfortunate displeasure to encounter thanks to my German and French friends whining about them. You still don't seem capable of grasping that fact; you're too caught up with this one particular show.

  • @Huper88 Now tell me how the fuck that makes me a grade-A douchebag. because if THAT is enough to make me one, you're living in a really secluded little fantasy world.

  • Harald ist wirklich ein billiger Letterman Abklatsch.

  • fortunately, schmidt found his own style of late night, a few years later.

  • I'm german and I love Conan O'Brien and I love Harald Schmidt and it's so insanely awesome to see this clip. I didn't even know Conan has been on the show.

  • He's so cute. :D

  • coco ftw

  • coco speaks passable german. wonder why he did it in english?

  • Why the fuck did Harald asked him whether Conan has a Band on his Show??? As if He don't Know how its work in the US - hes fucking copying it!

  • @nNnimportant He's copying Letterman, Conan's show was new back then.

  • @nNnimportant Craig Ferguson's "Late Late Show" doesn't have a band.

    So here's an exception.

  • this is awesome, i think i might have seen this but i was only 10 years old then! conan on my favorite late night show before i got into the US originals.. so cool! but i agree, although he is quick and does a good job, the interpreter is very annoying. i am german, but it only makes things worse because i can understand both sides and compare them as i listen. thats a lot of work for basically just wanting to know what he is saying. everybody should be able to understand english anyway.

  • Aftershaveen

  • wow die waren beide soo jung ^^

  • Other countries rip off so much shite from the US, why don't they just speak english too?

  • German tv sucks. They dub everything! That's why I never watch german tv.

  • Oh, he's German. For a moment, I thought there was something wrong with him.

  • @donignacio2000 Hehehe. Nice reference to John Cleese :-)

  • @donignacio2000

    fawlty tower's maybe? hahaha

  • BOO! German guy is speaking over Coco. BLASPHEMY!!!!

  • @dcchung86 I knowww! : (

It's like a random, drunk., annoying guy interrupting a conversation with gibberish.

  • I bet this experience humbled Conan seeing a set that looked so whack compared to what he had.

  • haha it's funny how Harald is actually listening to Conan...that's a big sign for respect...usually he never cares about his guests :))

  • @SoLazy100 well he only took some of the best ideas from conans show its the least he could do

  • I love how he's all leaning into Conan's personal space; when Conan's trying to lean away a little bit he just keeps leaning closer. lol

  • @zenanarchist deine letzte beleidigung passt nicht zu deiner ansonstig akzeptablen argumentation. IDIOT

  • i thought conan spoke german

  • Did he ask him how much money he fucking makes? Jesus.

  • @shatner85

    sad huh?

  • so weird. imagine watching a talk show with simultaneous translastion. germans are either fucking mental or really esoteric or something. weird scary and concerning.

  • yeah, its definitely a weird thing they translate english to german on a german tv channel...

  • @shatner85

You _do_ know that not everybody speaks english, right?

  • @Stinkehund

yeah but the odd thing here is that conan speaks german.

maybe he's not confident enough for an exchange like this but i would have liked to see/hear it.

  • der simultandolmetscher nervt, aber sonst isses toll!

  • I speak german as good as i speak english, so get Harald´s jokes, unfortunately Conan doesn´t !

The two are frightening similiar, Harald Schmid is the Conan O´Brien Germany ! ! ! !.......or the other way around !

  • @TheRealHankMoody: no, they're not. schmidt's got a different sense of humor. he's more smug than self-"loathing", and, in my opinion, doesn't hold a candle to O'Brien's natural comedic talent.

  • @busenlilly1 at least he doesnt pretend to be someone else, do you really think conan is self-loathing? he only pretends to be to make a lot of money out of it you GAYMAN.

  • @sweiland75

    He speaks almost perfect english..

its just for the audience... to make it easier for them

  • It's mostly for the audience, I guess.

  • my god conan was so young, luv him

he made a special about this in his own show, must see!!

  • If your trying to hear Conan speak try covering your right speaker it helps a lot! Thanks for posting!

  • yea. every now and then the reaction is not that great but all in all i expected worse from what ive heard. he did goood even tho we was a bit jetlagged indeed. but it sucks that he cant even talk to harald in english, thats gotta be weird. i mean, cant they talk in english and then translate for the viewers? well, if conan would come back again, im pretty sure the language barrier wont be that bi a prob, but you always have to not get into tricky jokes with a foreign speaking country.

  • @slinter

i've heard that they do it just that way in the netherlands.

  • he can't really shine because of the language barrier and slight cultural diffrences.

  • haha, it's funny at the end, that Conan has to remind Harald to promote his show on NBC Europe.... the main reason why he came all the way to Germany :)

  • OMG... No one is getting that he's ~joking~ in all of his answers. Oh dear. XDDDD

  • I think they do, but if you get jokes translated it's just as half as funny. If I listen to Conan I laugh but if I listen to the translator it's getting unfunny....I guess that's the problem ;)

  • This appearance was part of the trip to Cologne. I just wish I knew what Harold was asking. Translation anyone? :)

  • Hope you did understand Conans answers, i didn't type them down.

Harald: First time in germany, first time in cologne?

then he says: yes that's "kölsch, dat kütt bei uns vom herze" (which is cologne slang and means "this is typical cologne, it comes from the heart)

  • Harald: Usually when american guests come here they see europe within two and half days: Heidelberg, Wien, Budapest and a little bit of Sant Pauli and then back to america.

Do you have time to stay longer or do you have to go straight back?

  • Harald: Here in germany late night is a pretty hard job, it's enough for living but you have little spare time, you don't get to see anything of the world, I only can look to new york, manhatten in envy. How is it to do a late night show in this melting pot with this great women and the millions of dollars that get paid, what kind of feeling is it then when you come here to town?

  • Harald: These Supermodels.... after Conan said his part he replies: Yes usually here we call them mannequins or bierfräulein because they wear this dresses...and you live in the same house like Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, is that right?

  • When Conan says that no one knows how tall Harald is:

    Harald: No TV deludes extremely

Then when Conan tells him that the audience were afraid of Harald when he came out:

Harald: Was it your impression that the audience didn't react when i came out tonight?

    (Conan)

Harald: Yes that's how it happend tonight, wasn't it? That's how it was.

  • To the audience:

Harald: So you get an idea of how different late night works in america, a very young TV genre over there, we have a little clip here for you from Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

  • Harald: You have also a band on the show? The great Max Weinberg who also played for Bruce Springsteen in the past.

When Conan says Max career would be down he says: No not really!

When you visit your parents, your parents live in boston and they are doctors ...you yourself are highly educated, studied at harvard, graduated with honor, so actually a real intellectual...so when you come back to your parents and they see what you do the whole week long how do they react?

  • Harald: money....here we read about this incredible numbers, how much do you earn as a late night host in america? ...when conan says he actually wouldn't make a lot Harald says: I know where you coming from

Harald: I was always looking for this words and now finally it's verbalized!

So what are doing tonight, hitting the night life in cologne when the show here is over?

At the end he says: Conan O'Brien on NBC Europe at 11 p.m.

    ---

    hope this helps ;)

  • Thank you! :D

  • @conan416

    thanks

  • What in the...

  • Conan looks tense.

  • yeah, he seems a little jet lagged and perhaps he's thrown off by the language difference
