The same reason people stand when the President of the USA enters the room. It is to show respect, courtesy, humility and to honor the custom of the country. Just as a foreign visitor may shake hands although they may not do so in their country. Which is why the President visiting another country should have courtesy and good will as well as manners.

Why do Americans curtsey for Royalty? You aren't obliged to if you are an American! What was the sense of America becoming a Republic if you're still going to curtsey to the monarch of Great Britain? It makes no sense!

I know it's all moot in this case as Ms. Mansfield is no longer with us, but Americans still do it to this day. People even had the nerve to be offended when the Obamas didn't bow and curtsey...they don't have to! They aren't a British or Commonwealth citizen-geesh!
