Do you want to watch a TigerDirect video that tells you how to ignorantly reduce your Vista OS's security back to Windows XP level? Allow or Deny? DENY!
Do NOT disable UAC. There's more to it than prompting. It's preventing malicious/silent changes to the OS. If you disable it, you are losing that protection as well as IE protected mode and virtualization.
I would think being prone to malware would give nightmares, not UAC.
@STVYT Also consider that you should only really be getting prompts when you perform an administrative setting change, write to a location that's administrator only, or install software. If you are seeing more than that, then you have another completely separate issue to do with file-level permissions. Troubleshoot the cause of the problem.
why they dont put xp? because vista is newer and you know how it is dont you newer = better
more security and everything but more slow
and if your into gaming then it wont make any difference, just configured it correctly and the game will run like before, unless you have no money and cant afford to give the OS like 300more ram then your gonna see decrease in performance
i saw ur user name was HP, and do you work for hp, i have a question, why the fuck do u put vista in the god damn things, next comp I buy i am making, and putting XP on, OR AT LEAST PROVIDE XP DRIVERS FOR ALL COMPS!!!

Stay away from it. I experienced Vista, and it literally destroyed my system and all I did was put a program on it - a program I have used for YEARS without problems. So what am I running now? Well I run Mac & Linux and if you are strapped for pounds I'd recommend going with a Linux distro. It requires some tech savviness to make it play nice but once it does, especially with Ubuntu & OpenSUSE, they are very friendly to the tech savvy person.
rml695 thats coz you did not know what your doing i have Vista and its working better then any one with Vista i know i bet you did not go to see if your PC will work with it if you did not then your the one to x up your pc lol works good for me just got to know what your doing

Statement by you,"I have no doubt that a P4 can handle most games, but there is a difference in between being able to run a game "like on the P4" and having the ultimate game experience of core2duos with lots of ram. " I posited a 10 ultimate gaming system in reply to this comment. You couldv easily make a 10 grand gaming system if you bought a huge 60 inch screen, a cintiq, or touch screen for a secondary monitor, dual, tripple sli, water cooling, nostromo, gaming keyboard/mouse/trackball.
At any rate it was simply to demonstrate that a core2duo isn't the ultimate gaming experiance, it's about average, and only a small bit better on the scale of things from an old p4. I have core2duo's and core quad's, the gaming experiance from them on the whole isn't that different from my p4 with most games, of course there are more and more exceptions, but they're still fairly rare. The single thing drawing back any system when it comes to games is the graphics card, not ram or main processor
Hahaha I could say the same about you, I know you have serious problems, please seek help, but likely you already have. I can recognize people with horrible pasts because they're quick to diagnose others, and put their problems on others. roflol
You back them up with articles that are either propaganda, or only give a hint to the full truth, and only look at part of what you're saying and think that's the whole story.
Photoshop does have it wrong, there are programs out there that make photoshop look like it's a joke. Try Sai that's 2 mb large, runs on practically every system there is, can do hundreds of layers, also includes vector graphics inside it, that completely makes illustrator look like a joke, and tell me that adobe isn't a bloated horrible program.
So your definition of a professional artist is that it has to fit within a certain style and look "cool" by your stadards? People buy my artwork, and my photoshop work. That's all it requires to be "professional" by any dictionary.
You're exactly right, noone should spend that much, that's the point I'm kaking in response to your posit that you need 8 gigs to run photoshop correctly. roflol
That's a cool benchmarking site, but it doesn't reflect what resolution, or graphics card you're using, it wouldn't indicate the framerates you'd get.
It depends how you define professional. lol I have been paid for my photoshop work, although I don't work in an office where every second counts that I would need an 8 gig system. I do work with photoshop and other better graphics programs everyday.
I'm not denying the speed gains, you're completely misreading everything I'm saying. I'm denying that the speed/dollar cost is worth it, and that it adds extra functionality. It's pretty funny how every comment you add an insult at the end, that's mature?
My point is that you could easily drop 10 grand on the ultimate system, to have "the ultimate gaming experiance" and it wouldn't be worth spit the next day. The system you're thinking of is hardly an ultimate gaming system, and doesn't produce more than 20-30% more framerate than I'm able to get from my 4 year old system, so what's the point?
roflol And you'd call that an ultimate gaming experiance? Please! Yes, after a core2 extreme, good motherboard, ram, operating system, water cooling, a kick ass case, you're easily pushing 5-10 grand.
Of course there's a difference, but not much of one when it comes down to it. There is no ultimate game experiance. You bounce 10 grand into making the fastest computer on the market, and it'll be worthless in 6 months for the next game. lol
You don't need that kind of ram to make use of that, I am a professional photoshop user, and use it just fine with dozens if not hundreds of layers with only 2 gigs. The percentage of speed you gain is minimal for the expense.
The only reason xp would be outdated for gaming is that it didn't have support for directx 10, but that's not true really anymore, and certainly won't in the future. Xp is faster for games, and requires less ram.
I can still play most new games that are coming out now on my 4 year old p4, at lower resolutions. You're never going to have a game that has min specs higher than the average of what people are using in the pc market, because the percentage of people using systems that are specificially for gaming is like 5% of the potential marketplace which equals failure for the game if that's all they market to. The only reason that pc games are failing is because they're so easily pirated.
No game has ever required more than 3 gb of ram. lol 99% of games don't even require c2d's or bus speeds higher than 533, the only advantage of having the newer system and more than 2 gb of ram is better graphics. You're right, vista x86 limits your max system ram to 3.12 gb, so?
The only difference 8 gigs of ram vrs 4 gigs of ram makes in Photoshop is at best maybe cutting filter processing time. There's almost no phsyical real gain for that excess of memory.
And I didn't say I didn't notice anything I said I've noticed 4 or 5 things. Of course I've also noticed way more than 4 or 5 things that are a drawback to just using xp. The next system I build is going to be a dual boot xppro vista machine at very least.
A bigger screen would keep him from having to use the magnifier all the time is all I meant, and I offered 3 or 4 other solutions. Sides you can pick up a huge screen off ebay used for less than $100
The kernel may have changed, but it's not noticeable, and it's not a phyiscal real improvement. You might sculpt a statue of david, and it might be the greatest sculpture in the world, but if you cover it with dirt, who's going to know it from any other hill?
I built a new system specifically to vista, it's not underpowered. I don't think it's better, I think it's about the same. I've been using it for about 3 or 4 months now and I've found maybe 4 or 5 things that are different, of note, that are improvements over xp. Explain why it's 5 times better, don't just make some unqualified statement.
There are no concequences if you have a good antivirus and firewall, uac is a uselss stupid ass addition to vista that was made as a selling point to dumbasses that any real hacker or spamware/malware will instantly circumvent anyway.
omg you can't even use your true 4gb of reamy anyway. for 4gb of ram and a good video card, windows xp will only see 2.5gb of your ram. and if you have two video cards your max would be 2gb of ram. remember 4gb is 4gb total in the system. video card memory included along with all the other ram chips such as the 16mb ones in the hard drive and your 8mb ones in your cpu. all of that adds up.
firefox and the newer ie's are extremely stable and I've never once had problems with them downloading spamware or malware. If you turn indexing on, searching is extremely fast, and I run about 20 programs continuosly on my old p4 in xp home, never had a problem with multi tasking. You a linux user or something? lol
I challenge you to name more than 5 things that are different, and you can't use styling changes, or the sidebar, as xp can be made to echo those exactly.
when ever I try to turn UAC off my computer acts weird like it keeps logging off and the a black window called dl.exe pops up as well as HP connections, do you know anything about how to fix it without having to turn UAC back on?
Everyone hates Vista. It's cause it sucks. Microsoft ripped off Apple's OS X. What a joke. Windows is dead. Unless you are a person whose career is based on a Windows program, you should switch to OS X. Apple thinks of every detail and they are more stable.
You know I half think all this everyone hates vista crap is coming from mac users that never even tried it, have no familiarity with xp in the first place, and couldn't find their way out of a paper bag without some overpaid osx helper handholding them through the most basic of crap. Every new os has it's initial problem, even osx. People forget how bad xp and 98 were before the service packs, vista is loads better out the gate than they were.
Friend, I'm a Mac & Windows user. I prefer Mac due to easier to use applications, especially in the area of visual magnification software which i have to have in order to see the computer, and use it at all, period. Vista's magnifier is built in, yes, but it's an annoying bar at the top. The Mac's magnifier is also built in, but is full screen zoom, not just partial. As far as Vista? Well, I tried it and my system crashed to the point of no recovery. How's that for an experience? LOL
Get a bigger screen if you have to use the magnifier, geesh. There are also about 1 million different magnifiers for vista/xp that are free on the web, look em up. Geesh. I highly doubt you've been a windows user for any length of time, it's pretty clear you have no idea of the real issue between mac and xp, in that mac has 0 programs written for it relative to windows.
You shouldn't have to use the magnifier at all, you should be able to change the themes, icons and fonts so everything is readable, let alone the resolution so even on the smallest screen it's readable, if your eyesite is so bad.
Also I very much doubt the use of a magnifier crashed your system to the point of no recovery. It's likely your system had other serious problems and it just coincided with a crash. Also I doubt it was unrecoverable, most likely you or whoever worked on the system had no clue.
It wasn't the magnifier. It was a 3rd party application that allows for a more advanced access solution that did it - when I contacted the manufacturer I gave them as detailed an explanation as I could, and they hadn't a clue what happened.
Well that's the drawback with Windows, but one that is usually worth paying. It's like the difference between democracy and communism/socialism. You might have a higher crime rate with democracy, and not everything will be perfect all the time, but I'd rather be free. lol
I can name on one hand the number of programs osx has that are better, easier to use, or surpass windows programs in functionality. It's pretty sad when you buy an os for 3 or 4 programs.
I also think it's pretty funny how Mac users keep claiming windows is dead. Mac died when it lost it's original hardware and started running shells of xp. It basically admitted its defeat and tried to work within intel/microsoft framework to find a niche market. It's only managed to stay alive at all because of that.

I challenge you to name more than 5 things that are different, and you can't use styling changes, or the sidebar, as xp can be made to echo those exactly.

Why is it dumb? That's what it is.

The easiest way is TweakUAC, download it and enjoy

when ever I try to turn UAC off my computer acts weird like it keeps logging off and the a black window called dl.exe pops up as well as HP connections, do you know anything about how to fix it without having to turn UAC back on?

Everyone hates Vista. It's cause it sucks. Microsoft ripped off Apple's OS X. What a joke. Windows is dead. Unless you are a person whose career is based on a Windows program, you should switch to OS X. Apple thinks of every detail and they are more stable.

Um, Vista is basically windows xp with like 4 or 5 new features, it's nothing like osx, some of them annoying.
chimera15 4 years ago
You know I half think all this everyone hates vista crap is coming from mac users that never even tried it, have no familiarity with xp in the first place, and couldn't find their way out of a paper bag without some overpaid osx helper handholding them through the most basic of crap. Every new os has it's initial problem, even osx. People forget how bad xp and 98 were before the service packs, vista is loads better out the gate than they were.
chimera15 4 years ago
Or I should have said 95, 98 wasn't that bad out the gate cause it was essentially a service pack for 95. lol

LOL
rml695 4 years ago
Get a bigger screen if you have to use the magnifier, geesh. There are also about 1 million different magnifiers for vista/xp that are free on the web, look em up. Geesh. I highly doubt you've been a windows user for any length of time, it's pretty clear you have no idea of the real issue between mac and xp, in that mac has 0 programs written for it relative to windows.
chimera15 4 years ago 2
You shouldn't have to use the magnifier at all, you should be able to change the themes, icons and fonts so everything is readable, let alone the resolution so even on the smallest screen it's readable, if your eyesite is so bad.
chimera15 4 years ago
Trouble with making the fonts big, is that they get so big that the bottoms & tops of windows disappear.
rml695 4 years ago
Also I very much doubt the use of a magnifier crashed your system to the point of no recovery. It's likely your system had other serious problems and it just coincided with a crash. Also I doubt it was unrecoverable, most likely you or whoever worked on the system had no clue.
chimera15 4 years ago
It wasn't the magnifier. It was a 3rd party application that allows for a more advanced access solution that did it - when I contacted the manufacturer I gave them as detailed an explanation as I could, and they hadn't a clue what happened.
rml695 4 years ago
Well that's the drawback with Windows, but one that is usually worth paying. It's like the difference between democracy and communism/socialism. You might have a higher crime rate with democracy, and not everything will be perfect all the time, but I'd rather be free. lol
chimera15 4 years ago
I can name on one hand the number of programs osx has that are better, easier to use, or surpass windows programs in functionality. It's pretty sad when you buy an os for 3 or 4 programs.
chimera15 4 years ago
I also think it's pretty funny how Mac users keep claiming windows is dead. Mac died when it lost it's original hardware and started running shells of xp. It basically admitted its defeat and tried to work within intel/microsoft framework to find a niche market. It's only managed to stay alive at all because of that.
