  • How is better to TIG Aluminium AC or DC ???

  • that pieced needs a backing and then you can add more heat getting 100% penetration and zero distortion

  • ..Gentle persuasion, of course, and then surely you have the #10 hammer for serious 'disturbing'.. ?

  • Nice demo.

  • can i send you a drawing and have to bend the box and weld it up for me??

  • @MotorsportsX Would be happy to do that. I am based in the UK so it would probably only work if you are UK based too ?

  • that's nice.

  • Man you make this look so easy.... I'm struggling to get a stable arc on ali.. :(

  • @daemonuk try using quite big gas nozzle and don't stick the electrode out of it more than a half of its thickness. Also wind up Your AC frequency. It keeps the arc considerably stable. It won't be as stable as when DC welding using a sharp tungsten, but once it grabs it won't bounce around.

  • @TransAmDrifter cheers - will try that with the next bit of ali... :)

  • ugh i want your job i hate mine

  • I've been tigging for 30 years. Nice job there.

  • @Lockbar I say so too, and I'm also at 30 years welding...this guy is good there with free-handing the torch..

  • Very nice welds ,, Aluminum is a blast to work with. Usually tho on corner welds like that i try to use " fusion " without using any filler rod .. it usually comes out a little cleaner - For projects that will have pressure built up in them sometimes using filler rod is the only way to go =)

  • Nice weld!

  • hated alu / copper welds ,always got hot fingers on it ......lol

  • Is this something a person with no experience in welding can do? I'm thinking of doing a diy aquarium canopy .... Basically a rectangular fram? Equiptment can be rented at Home Depot?

  • Only advice I would give is to increase the speed slightly. Aluminum and stainless require that you get in and get out quickly minimizing the amount of soak in the base material. You would never be able to weld structural aluminum or especially stainless at these speeds without excessive chromium carbide build up. Up the heat, and increase rate of weld short of crystalization. I did notice you turned the electrode in and reduced the heat when approaching the end, nicely done.

  • nice weld!!!!!

  • you should try feathering the pedal, you can get a better consistancy in your weld deffinition if you can pick up on it.

  • Nice weld job. Do you recall what tungsten you used. I've heard that 2% Lathenated (sky blue tip) is really good for AC TIG on Aluminium but these only seem available from the states. The 1% Lathenated (black tip) I find ball up quick although I guess that would not matter on an outside corner so much. I've not tried 1.5% (gold). The Zirconiated white tip are also supposed to be good for AC.

  • @ruthjunestokes I always use the green tipped tungsten and pure argon when I weld aluminum. we have just started to use the chem sharp method for sharpening our tungsten. I will never grind it again. It is so nice with the chemical sharpening. custom aluminum boxes.com. t see some of our work. I have a Miller syncrowave 200 It's very nice has a pulser which really keeps the heat down. It makes a lot of noise when we weld and it looks like a strobe light is on the the shop.

  • Hello, Thanks for the video. Could you please post a video on AL VERTICAL WELDING? I tried it but I can't do it. Thanks. Regards.

  • What´s the parameters used in the welder machine ?

  • beautiful weld! What is your tig SetUp ?

  • @studleylee I use an ESAB Twintig250 AC/DC set (obviously using AC for ali). It is a fairly basic and reasonably heavy duty transformer based unit. I also have a fancy inverter based unit but haven't had the patience to get all the settings correct yet.

  • is the only way to tack weld aluminum with filler, since I try to do it without filler and both pieces of aluminum melt away from each other

  • @GameFishermen It is possible depending on the type of joint, external corners like this tend to be OK, butt joints you are going to struggle. I always use filler though.

  • @Dynarobin

what kind of electrode you use in this video ?

2% lanthanated or pure tungsten electrode ?

i'm a welder too, i prefer 2% thoriated electrode welding both aluminium and stainless steel.

  • @Ventilatorzzz green is good for Alu alloys, while red and grey are good for steel alloys... oh... I forgot to add they work fine for me. Gas choice is also a good thing. Alu goes fine with 100% Ar and Ar with He mixtures or pure He. Stainless goes fine using Ar + 2%H (not He). Don't try using any Hydrogen mixtures with Aluminum. Try using biggest gas nozzles possible to avoid oxidation and overheat.

  • @Dynarobin ...aluminum pretty much always requires filler...

  • @GameFishermen Lap welds do not require filler, however they will fail most inspections since filler is of a specific alloy so that when mixed with the base material the overall weld will be homogenous and as strong if not stronger than the host metal itself. Cosmetic, no need for filler, structural, always use filler...even for spot welds. Also, the reason why you have shrinkage or creep is because the two pieces cannot convect through each other; connect them and the heat can dissipate evenly.

  • @GameFishermen then keep practicing...i never had a problem..although it is hard depending on piece...its all in the delivery...hit it fast and hard with lots of heat....super fast and it works just fine

  • im a skilled welder and i am having a little problem with tig do u have any tips for me

  • @MrSvingy like what kind? striking an arc? keeping stable puddle?

  • @MrSvingy get comfy before you start the weld, make sure you get finish the whole weld, if you stop you lose penetration, even tacking can loose your penetration but sometimes nesceserry..

  • @MrSvingy I don't consider myself a skilled welder but I have had a lot of practice with ali tig (I've only ever had a weeks training in welding) :) My advice is patience, you have to be prepared to wait for the weld pool to develop in both parts before you introduce the filler, if you rush it then it won't work.

  • @MrSvingy My advice is to start out with very low amperage. I had extreme difficulty welding aluminum when I started out. It turned out I was killing it with too much amperage. I turned my miller 180sd down to 65 amps and thats when I realized what worked. So start out with low amperage and go from there.

  • Sweet!

  • can you only weld aluminum ac +?

  • Remove the oxides first you have a much better weld!!!

  • I noticed that you come in from the top side with the filler rod - is that to prevent it drooping away before it hits the puddle moving horizontally? or just your welding position at the time? cheers

  • that box looks an awful lot like the skimmers in commercial dish washers for restaurants. is that waht this is lol?

  • @cryptsys It's the enclosure for an LED display - each hole has an LED poking through it.

  • @Dynarobin

Would u say a Tig weld is essential for making say a motorcycle lift that can support 500lbs?

  • Thanks for the clarification; I use Energas for my argon/co2 mix at the mo and it only costs me £11 per month for the bottle rental, I guess pure argon is a bit more expensive than that...

  • Do you have to use pure argon?

  • @fileferret2012 Definitely, you need every advantage you can get with TIG welding so it isn't worth scrimping. Pureshield (100% Ar) is only a bit more expensive than ArgonShield (with CO2). You can add Helium if you want to weld faster but then your gas bills get really high!

I get PureShield Argon from a scrapyard, I bought a 47litre (J or W size) cylinder from them for £50 and can get it filled for £50 a time - works out about 1/3 the price of BOC ongoing.

  • Amazing job.

  • beautiful weld

  • That was a really nice bead!

  • WOW! some day I will learn to do a bead like that...

  • good job, thanks for sharing
