This is just a nematomorpha parasite AKA horsehair worm. They're actually very interesting because just before they are ready to come out they will control the host, and force it to jump into a water source, the worm's natural habitat. definately Mermis nigrescens, parasite that kills insects, and is used to control grasshopper populations, if its dark in colour, its a female thats full of eggs, and is white/creamy if no eggs are inside. laying around 20-100 eggs each year, relying on a host insect to absorb food as it cannot eat itself.

I've seen these things come out of a jerusalem cricket. Apparently one of the effects is insatiable thirst where the infected bug will crawl into the nearest body of water and drown. Happens in Southern California. I'm glad there aren't larger versions for us humans ... or are there?!

That is a parasite. They usually live in crickets but evidently this one found its way into an earwig. It's scary as hell, some species of parasitic worms can actually control the mind of their host, like the ones that live in crickets force the cricket to drown themselves.

Saw a Night Gallery story once about a nasty fella that had an earwig put in his ear while in South America. A doctor got the earwig out and mashed it. Baby earwigs came out. Reminds me of something I did in my yard - I chopped the head and thorax of a grasshopper apart from the abdomen and left it to die on an ant mound. After I came back a couple minutes later, the ants were swarming over the grasshopper.
