I think the first 15 minutes of this movie are brilliant set up. It tells a truly heart-wrenching story with tons of emotion. I love every scene in the opening flashbacks, up until Ellie's death. It's amazing.

HOWEVER, once that's over...the plot after kind of becomes like a Saturday morning cartoon. A generic mismatched buddy comedy so-to-speak. It's not bad by any means...just nowhere near as good as this opening scene.

Though I think the ending redeems the Russel/Carl plot.

May have been somewhat of a Saturday morning cartoon, but that, to me, was the idea. In the album Ellie had wrote for Carl to have another adventure, and so he did. He had a crazy one, like a cartoon. xD So, for me it was all touching that the old timer went and actually made a story out of his and Ellie's dream.
