When I am pay money to watch a musical, I want to see performers who can SING. HBC is a terrific actress, but she has such a limited vocal range that she can't do justice to Mr. Sondheim's music.
I can't choose. Personally, I think Mrs Lovett HAS to be a LITTLE bit delirious and insane, but really, I think you can portray Mrs Lovett any way. She can be quiet or loud in this case. Honestly, I love the way the three of them did it and I wouldn't change their acting or singing. I love all three :) I just CANNOT compare them!
Ms. LuPone is perfect for this. Mrs. Lovett is supposed to be brash, and loud and gossipy. She finds trouble, and does whatever it takes for her man. Patti acts it the best and is a phenomenal singer.
I always found Mrs. Lovett annoying until I saw her as HBC. I felt HBC really captured the character and showed more of the personality, as opposed to "creepy girl who will do anything for the guy she loves."
HBC is my favorite. But Patti and Angela are both phenomenal actresses too.
hmmmmmm this is a tough one i am a huge patti fan and in general her vocie is better than both of them and angela is great too a great actress but i feel for the role of miss lovetts helena actually fits better she as well as playing the part well looks the part. the mood about her and her interpretation and just her like "sweet creepiness". Her voice is not that bad. i guess idk i think in all she did a great job but all are wonderful! my choice helena.
Angela is FABULOUS! But I would prefer Patti cause she is a GODESS! SHE IS SO FREAKIN AWESOME AT THIS! And Helena.... ahh I dont even wanna talk about that failure.. director's girlfriend my ass....
I think Patti gave an amazing performance, and has an amazing voice, but isn't really mrs lovett.
i adore angela and her performance but its a bit too insane for me and the accent is literally terrible
and then theres helena....who i think when you look at original sondheim is closest to what i always saw mrs lovett as, and who i think is by far the best in the role :)
Patti LuPone, hands down. I love Angela to death, but she needs to be a tad bit more sinister to do Mrs. Lovett. And Helena... love you too, but stick to acting.
Helena :) .. the accent was right unlike Patti and shes a briliant actor and even though shes not a crazy singer she did a great job, shes prettier... but maybe Im being biased since im english ahaha i do love angela and Patti though .. but i dont like they're portrails of mrs lovett..
People are too harsh on Helena. Neither Angela nor Patti's performances would have worked on film, and if either of them had been in a movie version their performances would probably have been more similar to Helena's. Can you seriously imagine that scene in the movie (two people in a room alone together) with Mrs Lovett belting that song out out at Todd? Some things just don't translate from the theatre to film.
@PrincessGwendolen - and can you imagine Helena performing it on stage? She couldn't even do it well in film - and that's so much easier than performing on stage. In film, if you goof something up, it can be edited out & you can do it again. On stage, you only have one shot at it.
Helena looks better for the part than the other two, she's really got the era right. Personally i prefer her performance for it, though you can do more with films and she isn't so comedic.
Again, not fair to compare Helena to the others. She's just not a singer, much less a stage singer. She is, however, a superb actress with the advantage of a soundstage, the direction of Tim Burton, and godly fucking Johnny Depp opposite her role. She's a damn sight better looking, too. With that in mind, it is equally unfair to Angela and Patti to be compared to Helena. What can be done on film that is simply out of reach on stage further proves that this is really an "apples to oranges" case.
I mean, Helena is not Broadway quality (she's not a singer), but in general, I liked her performance. On stage, you can't speak quietly and sinister like she did in the movie, so I liked that new aspect of it. Of course I prefer Angela (because she's amazing) and Patti (because she's hysterical) but I liked how tragic and very dimensional Helena was.
There is no contest. The part was written for Angela and she reigns. She is the only one who is able to bring the sense of authentic British music hall to the part. It's that ability that makes what is basically a reprehensible character almost endearing. Lupone makes her sound too much like Evita and her accent is not good. She was much better in the revival. John Doyle (director) was able to rein her in more. plus she goes flat at the end her. Helena ..... well, I loved the movie but ....

Singing on stage and singing in a film are not the same thing at all.
I was surprisingly impressed by Helena. Angela's performence is a classic though. Not a fan of Patti's rendition tbh. Just my personal opinion.

Poor Helena. That's what you get when you cast someone who can't sing in a SINGING role. And especially such a demanding vocal role as Mrs. Lovett!

George Hearn would make a better Mrs. Lovett than HBC.
