Sure, Cynic are metal, but they have a lot of jazz and fusion influence. You mosh to metal, but you groove to jazz and fusion. With Cynic, I like to meet in the middle. That is, I would rather stand at the fron, mind my own business, and just fucking nod/bang my head to them. Then again, I don't push people around for any band. I'm certainly no hippy, I just don't care for moshing.
That being said, don't judge people because they don't do what you like. Shut the fuck up do your own thing.
@m0eDr3adzz Oh my God, shut the fuck up. You're not better than anyone because of your taste in music; stop acting like such an elitist prick. It's embarrassing for the rest of us who listen to this music.
i went to a cynic concert and tried starting a mosh pit but all the hippy pussies werent taking into it. CYNIC IS METAL!!! go see phish if you dont want to mosh!!
@m0eDr3adzz exactly. there's the optimism. See, the universe just rewards you for having a good taste in music by giving you cheap concert tickets and a deeper musical experience. haha
I would certainly call this prog rock or prog metal and technical. in what way to "death metal" or jazz apply to this? Not a criticism, i just want to learn more about the way genres are defined. people who say categorizing music is dumb are themselves dumb imo.
@jsteele07189 I think the jazz label comes from the degree of syncopation the rhythm section employs - particularly in Sean Reinert's drumming. This is probably more obvious on their first CD Focus. There's also a good amount of tension and dissonance in the chords used, which I'm sure also contributes.
@TheHideousRevelation I don't see why no one has found this reply to be as funny as I have within seven months! Or at least commented about it... That's classic.
@DSDshenanigans I can think of a million reasons why cynic, and hundreds of other bands shouldn't be mainstream. The money can go to their heads causing them to not produce fucking amazing music. Posers'll start listening to it...damn scene kids. They would have to change their style to make it more mainstream friendly. The fact that this music isn't popular is what makes it so great. Metal fans should be appreciative of that!
i could see how some people say it sounds like tool, i mean, its choatic as hell, and as far as drums, there is alot of tom use going on and not so much on cymbals, and it sounds like a ton of timing shifts, which is something tool does alot. however i pretty much doubt either band derives any influence from the other.
@ ungrats tool rocks and daney carey is the master of poly rtyhms and time signature changes. His actual drumming is very creative as well. Tool does not sound like Cynic but they both rock!
Cynic are underated. but it is really about time they got some recognition that they deserve, for thei excellent material. This band may not be as popular as DT or tool, but five years from now,you may find them touring together.its not like i can tell the future or anything.its just a matter of finding awesome music;)
no man tool are the poster boys of progressive music i like both bands and both bands have sick ass drummers this sounds nothing like tool its just different if you think danny carey sucks than you obliviously know nothing about music or drumming

I just started listening to Cynic in the past few hours and I can definitely hear a lot of similarities to Tool. Keep in mind that it is so hard to find bands that sound like Tool (without just copying their sound) so we're probably noticing the similarities stronger than they actually are. Glad to have found Cynic's stuff. Enjoying their 2008 release at the moment. :]
look people! tool released opiate in 92/cynic released focus in 93/ both from same era however cynic did not put out an album again until 2008/i am saying influence!! not sounds like!!. there is a difference.
levenorion? same era? what are you talking about???
Cynic is from the Florida death metal scene, tool is from LA....
Sean and Paul worked with a guy named Chuck Schuldiner (kind of an important person in metal... he made the band Death, if you heard of them) on an album called "Human" which was 1991...
tool is fine, i like D's work and all...,but to claim like an authority stating Cynic learned a thing from them. not only do i not hear it, the history just says otherwise
sounds like tool influence to me. all you tool haters just cant admit tool is the fore front for music like this, cynic is just alittle heavier thats all.
I'M a moron? I'm not the one who likes pussy, no-talent Tool. I can groan into a microphone over a simple, repetitive beat for ten minutes too, does that make me a "musical genius"?
oh really? and you can play like Cynic´s drummer or better that Danny Carey from Tool too?maybe you can play even better cause they just plays "repetitive beats", so then show us a video of your musical talent, genius!!
The first few moments of the album sounds like Tool Third Eye and I wont be surprised if they sampled it.

One thing that I've realized about Cynic is that their songs, all of them, have the uncanny ability to make the listener feel very, very, small.
