How make this work is each wave gets progressively harder, preparing for the batting ram, not 18 waves of bunch of guys and the last one a huge vehicle that is hard to kill.

But I feel it doesn't fit in this game. I think it's better it's just street fighting where you jump into the fray and fight them. Maybe you can order some units to fight for your advantage.

I don't know why they put this in, it doesn't seem very Assassin's Creed like at all.

@DeafEskimo Gameplay wise, maybe it isn't very Assassins Creed like. Story wise it makes a lot of sense.

Personally, I like it. But even if you don't like it, they only make you do it once. You can complete the entire story only doing one of them, which I did because at first I sucked at them =P
